“Couldn't recommend this hotel enough.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 7, 2013 via mobile

The girlfriend & I stayed here over the May bank holiday weekend from Sunday to Monday. I wasn't optimistic when I first saw the hotel sandwiched between a large O'neills & reflex club. On arrival the staff were brilliant. Fast & efficient. The room was immaculate. The breakfast excellent & my fear of the location was soon dismissed as you could hear a pin drop in our room. No noise at all even from the high street antics as it was Cardiff city promotion celebrations! 10/10 I can't emphasis enough how enjoyable our stay was. I wouldn't even contemplate finding anywhere else. The location, food & service was top.

Either we got last dibs on rooms, or there are a lot of indiscriminating guests staying at this hotel. Shabby would be a kind description for the hotel's entrance, front desk, service, room size, room conditions, cleanliness... and even its 'central' location is dubious because there is literally NO way to get here by car. That goes double for weekend evenings when streets are closed in the city centre for drunken revelry - which, by the way, in this old hotel, does not lend itself to a quiet night's rest.

Our double bed room had no place to walk AND store luggage. The bath was larger, almost, than the room - though it had a small sink, a toilet, and small shower tub - and lots of dead space. Go figure. Getting in and out of the hotel's two entrances, nearly indistinguishable, and following the maze of stairs, lifts (when they work) and split level hallways, is its own challenge. Something you might expect in a castle, but this is no castle, despite the name.

Parking is remote, about 600 yards away in one of two car parks. Good luck finding either on your GPS navigator. Even better luck with one way streets, often (it appears) closed off. Local police offer no assistance, and local drunks aren't much help either. It cost us 9 GBP to park 24 hours at the central rail station.

Amenities are sparse. We prepaid for breakfast, which was actually the best experience we've had in the UK among tourist class hotels.

We spent a night here. Couldn't be more central for Cardiff, however, be warned that some of the rooms are inside rooms and have no windows. We were put in one but the hotel was full on a Saturday night. We did book with Avios(air miles) so didn't make an issue of it. The breakfast was excellent and as good as you'll get in any hotel and the staff were pleasant. The main entrance is on a pedestrianised street and you cannot get a car there, there is a rear entrance on Westgate Street where somebody can sit in the car whilst the bags are whizzed in. There's a nightclub on the ground floor but we were on the 4th floor and we had a very peaceful night even though it is slightly disconcerting not being able to tell what time of day it is outside!

We stayed here on a friday night as apart of our wedding anniversary marathon. It was quite spur of the moment but a family deluxe room for £89.99 with a bottle of wine was to good to not take advantage of!!
The hotel is really boutique looking, very friendly and willing to help staff as well, the room was also really amazing 50" screen, a pull out double sofa bed for my daughter massive bed for my wife and eye and some awesome views of the city!
The bathroom was really spacious and comfortable as well!!
We signed up for breakfast as well which was your continental buffet style with an option of ordering from the hot list to.
They also have a rate with the NCP car park by the train station for £10 for 24 hours.

Situated in the heart of the city but you couldnt hear it at all, well worth booking into or advising visitors to stop into for affordable luxury!

Room Tip: Go deluxe with the sofa bed even if you dont use it!!

Recently stayed at The Royal while in town for a concert. Lovely room with a great big comfy bed a massive tv and a lovely bottle of wine included. Very nice clean bathroom as well. Hotel is in a great location as it is right in the centre of the town although it was quite noisy at night for a while. My only gripe was that the breakfast was quite expensive at £11 although it was quite nice.
