“Excellent stay, would highly recommend”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 2, 2012

I stayed at The Royal Hotel in June during the Jubilee weekend, with my partner, and it was a simply superb stay.

From beginning to end, the service was impeccable and not to be faulted. I made two special requests to the hotel when I booked which was the room be on one of the higher floors (to avoid noise from St Marts Street) and that the room have a bath. Both these requests were taken into account and I was given a beautiful room on the 6th floor with en suite bath.

The room itself was immaculate upon arrival - staff were welcoming and checked us in quickly and easily. The hotel is stunningly decorated throughout, and the hotel room reflected this high quality too. It is stylish, spacious, and modern and the bed was extremely comfortable. I had a great nights sleep and was not at all bothered by any noise from the street below.

My partner and I came back late, which meant the front door was locked and we had to be buzzed in but reception took less than a minute to respond. The staff even greeted us and had a quick chat as we passed by at 2am!

Breakfast in the morning was just lovely. There was a cooked and continental buffet breakfast available. My partner and I tried a bit of both, and the selection and quality was high. Location-wise, it also cannot be faulted, opening right onto St Marys Street which is the main street in Cardiff for both shopping and a night out.

Honestly, I cannot fault anything about my stay here. Staff were friendly and helpful throughout, the room itself was beautiful and comfortable, and I would highly recommend staying here. I will most certainly be coming back!

I booked through air miles a twin room for my daughter and myself. We had a room on the 6th floor as I had requested a quiet room. It was nicely decorated and comfortable, just a shower but probably to be expected for a city hotel. It was quiet, even though we were in the heart of the city.
My only grumble with the room was that you could not see out of the window, a six foot tall person might, just!
All staff were very friendly and breakfasts are excellent.
On arrival we found reception quickly by taking the lift to the 2nd flooor. One other niggle about booking in, they really don't allow you in to your room before 3pm and will not check to see if it is ready. We were off to see a show and would have liked to hang our clothes up and freshen up before, as it happened, we did not get back until 10.45pm and then had to check in. I think that policy needs looking at!
They managed to provide us with a sandwich at that late hour and a glass of wine (only white wine being a chardonnay).
All in all, a good stay and we would consider staying there again because every time we wanted to go somewhere, it was minutes away, including the station.

Room Tip: Ask for a room high up but maybe mention that you would like to see out of the window!

We stayed here when we visited Cardiff for a girly weekend. We booked a double room as we didnt mind sleeping on the same bed at a very good price, for a such a good location I was expecting more.
The only issue was that it locked the entrance door after midnight and even though we buzzed to be let in, the person in charge was not very friendly and demanded the room number. We had hardly been in the room at all on our first day and we were a bit tipsy, so it took a while for us to be let in.
Other than than, very classy. The atmosphere is a bit icy, but that's probably part of the classy theme.

Not the easiest of hotels to find, but boy is it worth the effort. Right in the heart of the City on St Mary's Street so easy access to all the shops, bars and even transport! The hotel is beautifully kept with charming staff who go out of their way to assist you. Check out is the normal 11 o'clock but you can keep your luggage stored safely in reception so you can spend more time enjoying all Cardiff has to offer. The rooms are immaculate and the bed so comfy I didn't want to get out of it. To my husband's delight the tv was a good size and the shower was good and powerful. Breakfast is something not to be missed as the food is good and the room you are served in even better. Would I recommend it to others, absolutely in fact we have already booked to go back again. Great hotel, great value, great staff.

The hotel was really difficult to access if travelling by car , one access is on a pedestrian only road and the other is by a bus stop no waiting. not far from the railway station, the reception is on the 2nd floor and there is a lift. its a bit of a shock to see that it is above a busy Irish Pub, but once iside it is suprisingly quiet. The hotel is clean and modern in stye , the Staff were polite and obliging. centraly located for the sites. and right next to the millenium stadium. although Ive highlighted the down sides I would still recommended this hotel.

The hotel is right in the heart of Cardiff on Mary Street, which can be quite rowdy in the evenings. The entrance is fairly nondescript, and the reception is based on the second floor, up a long narrow staircase. There is a lift, but to reach it you have to go downstairs to reach it! However, when you arrive in reception it's quite pleasant and all the staff are very friendly. The room is excellent, roomy, well appointed, 36" flat screen TV, great shower - much better than we had expected - and very quiet! We had a pre-paid rate which included breakfast which was excellent. Cereals, fruit, croissants, pastries etc. Hot breakfast cooked to order was great and my wife had American pancakes with maple syrup which she thoroughly enjoyed. Lots of other things on the menu. The French lady looking after breakfast was super. Nothing was too much trouble. We really enjoyed it... and with a bit of history thrown in. The breakfast room, now called the Captain Scott Room, was where Scott of the Antarctic and his men were entertained to their final public banquet on June 13th 1910, before leaving Cardiff aboard their ship the Terra Nova on the 15th. Yes, it is a little grubby on the outside, and the stairs are a pain, but great location and great value - particularly as most Cardiff hotels are now so over-priced.

Stayed at the royal as a group of 3 girls in a triple room. We were looking for a fun weekend away with shopping and cocktails. The hotel is located literally 2 minutes walk from the train station, is surrounded by bars and clubs and is a few minutes walk from st Davids shopping centre. We had no problem finding the hotel, although we do agree that on arrival the layout is rather strange,- you enter in to a foyer with steps down to the lift or stairs up to the reception which is located on the second floor- we decided to carry the cases up the stairs but didn't actually realise quite how many there were! Would definitely recommend taking the 8 or so stairs down to the lift rather than the seemingly never ending ones going up with heavy luggage. Once we'd arrived in reception we were met by avery professional and friendly receptionist who as we had arrived at 1pm took our cases for safekeeping until our room would be ready at 3pm. We headed off for some lunch and when we came back were efficiently checked in and given our room keys. Unfortunately we realised the lift up to the rooms was out of order but luckily our room was only up one more flight of stairs and in all fairness by the time we had showered and changed the lift was working again and we had no further problems with it during our stay. We had booked a triple room and have to say all three of us were impressed with the amount of room we had! beyond our 3 beds there was at least 8ft by 12ft of floor space with a seating area flat screen tv and vanity unit - combine this with the built in double wardrobe and large full bathroom meant there was no fighting for space to get ready and plenty of room for the huge collection of shoes we had bought with us! :-) the room was clean tidy modern light and airy and all the fixtures and fittings were of a good standard. The location was great for us with everything on the doorstep. We had no problems with noise etc as the rooms seem to be very well insulated against it, if you didn't know then you would certainly never guess that you were above a club. We would have no hesitation in staying at this hotel again and would recommend anyone.
