“Ideal for City breaks”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 15, 2013

Central Cardiff hotel with on site parking (extra charge). Has excellent facilities and not particularly over priced for drinks / meals etc. Spa / pool area is clean and not overcrowded. The locker room floor was soaking and better drainage and drying needs to be addressed as a high risk of slipping.
Staff were very friendly and helpful.
The tea / coffee was never topped up enough and for a 3 night stay I had to ask for more sugar and milk sachets 4 times (due to only having two of each per person).
The location meant a few minutes walk to the city centre and all the bars / restaurants. John Lewis is virtually next door.
Would definitely stay again.

This hotel, along with several others, is right in the middle of the city so location is excellent. Breakfast is as you would expect from a 4 star establishment - and the staff are very good - nice lady at breakfast who will cook you an omelette to order and freshly prepared porridge to order. Both of these aspects I would rate 4 star. However ... our bedroom was awful. Small, in need of a refurbishment and for some reason we were allocated a disabled room. This at least gave us a bit more space in the bathroom, but the bathroom had a tiny sink - just big enough to wash your hands in - and the disabled rail to get out of the bath ran along the length of the bath which meant if you had a frozen shoulder on your right hand side you were ok, otherwise it intruded into your bath space!! A wheelchair would have been fine in the bathroom but barely room either side of the bed to manoeuvre. The furniture in the bedroom was old brown wood - where the fridge used to be had been boxed in with rough looking wood .... no better than a Travelodge to be fair to Travelodge. The windows are chest height and I couldn't get them to open. I can imagine that the hotel will be full this weekend coming, with the Wales v England rugby match, but I don't think it was full on Wednesday/Thursday so why was the room not serviced by 2.45pm. When I rang Reception in case this was an oversight, the Receptionist was very apologetic and said it would be given priority, but even then, it was still being serviced at 4.10pm. Sorry - not good enough. We arrived on Wednesday evening after a 3 hour drive, and after unpacking, went down for dinner to find that the restaurant wasn't even open so it was back up the room to put on coats and set off to look for somewhere to eat. The fairy lights outside and the ground floor Reception area look good on arrival but once you get inside the hotel ...... it doesn't live up to expectations. There are a lot of hotels in the immediate vicinity (we stayed at the Radisson Blu recently and this comes nowhere near their standards) ... so I would advise to check prices... if Marriott are significantly cheaper then fair enough but if not, then I would choose another hotel.

Room Tip: Try and establish beforehand what they are allocating you.

You know that when the staff are good, then everything else will simply fall into position. Check in was a breeze, as was checkout, and to be fair the numerous lost car park tickets as I popped in and out of the hotel now and again over the weekend were also seamlessly sorted out. Nothing was left to chance, and nothing was a problem.

The room was lovely, as was the breakfast each morning. The freshly made omelette being as delightful as the fresh fruit salad that I opted for each time. The gymnasium and health spa is astonishingly well equipped, and could easily become my regular if I ever move back to the city. But in all fairness it was the staff that made it, and especially those crewing the reception. They were all good, but for a variety of reasons, for us one stood out from the crowd. Nothing was too much trouble, and every time we passed we were engaged and made to feel like one of the family. It was inevitable that it would happen, I mean its either a thank you letter to the manager or a 5* Review on Tripadvisor. So I looked at him with enquiring eyes, he knew in an instant that we wanted his name; "James" he smiled, . . . "James Marriott 029" (2039 9944).

TIPS: (1) Seek out James as he's a star, (2) If you ask, then the bar staff will conjure up an alcohol free cocktail.

ADVICE FOR MANAGEMENT: (1) Very impressed when I saw the cleaning of the inside of the car park lift. You can't make a second first impression, and it was therefore nice to note that the Marriott see the importance of the route from the car park, (2) You need to buy some more courtesy use umbrellas or build a covered walkway to and from the hotel frontage and the car park secured gate.

I came here recently tagging along whilst my partner was there for work... and i must say i was impressed with the over all look and feel of the place... the breakfast buffet was amazing and to a very high standard... i went shopping around cardiff and the location is fab.... bang in the middle of town. The staff were very friendly and helpful and i must say..... the only thing that ruined my stay was housekeeping... i put a do not disturb sign on the door as i was tired and hadnt slept the night before very well and needed some sleep but housekeeping thought it was perfectly acceptable to knock a dozen times and then even tried to unlock and enter my room even though there was a sign outside!!!!!!!! this happened FOUR times throughout the day!!!!!! in the end i actually had to go and answer the door and ask them what was going on!! it completley spoilt my mood for the rest of the day ... despite this it is a good hotel... housekeeping just need reminding to not disturb if the sign is on the door...the swimming pool and amenities are very good aswell so bring swimwear!! :)

Two double beds which allowed three adults and a great breakfast at a bargain price £114. Very conveniently located by John Lewis and St David's shopping, and only £5 taxi to Cardiff bay. Great welcoming staff and will definitely recommend!

The hotel is excellently located a few minutes walk from the Cardiff rail station. The staff are very friendly and only to happy to help. The main bar area is just wonderful with a number of different areas containing comfy chairs, stools, and nicely segregates those that want to relax from those that like to watch the football.
The gym is very large with lots of devices and the pool is most refreshing.
The only issue I've found is that during cold and windy days rooms on the higher floors feel uncomfortably cold. Some of the decoration look a little tied too.
Overall an excellent place to stay in Cardiff and very well located in the city center.
Absolutely magical at Christmas time.

Room Tip: Lower rooms facing the John Lewis shopping center
