“Refurbishment makes this an exceptionally good Travelodge”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 9, 2013

We had a couple of rooms - family & double - at £15-£29/night (early booking, and later booking) for 5 nights last week during a lovely sunny week and were very pleased indeed as the new beds were MUCH liked, and the hotel's in very good nick and conveniently located.

Modern purpose built building and rooms (very recently as I understand it, hence maybe why they have a new TripAdvisor profile) refurbished with their new very decent pocket-sprung king "Sleepeezee" mattresses (instead of maybe tired/cheapo ones) and four pillows (v. maybe 3 tired ones).

Otherwise very standard 'recent-design' Travelodge rooms with red tiling in bathroom [as per others pics]; bedhead unit with strip light [white rather than later amber]; those daft bendy metal spring style bedside lights [they later substituted flush ones] though still in full working order; a small but functional desk with light above; and no storage space/shelfage apart from the one above the open-plan hangers behind the door. There were 2 mains sockets on desk, and one for electric heater. While we were there they left a small electric fan so maybe anticipating hot rooms on South side with summer sun [we left window ajar when we went out anyway].

Travelwise VERY convenient: free parking (they validate Red Dragon car park ticket); just a few mins walk from Bay rail station (for shuttle train to Queen St), but most conveniently for stops for Cardiff Bus 6 BayCar bendy-bus service up to and around City Centre (main station just 6 minutes away) - running every 10 mins most of day (and still only 20 mins late evenings). Walking it's just 5-10 mins from Millennium Centre and all the Bay area restaurants/stores/etc; both Sainsburys & Tesco local stores there too.

So being used to the clean-simple, poor storage in the Travelodge designs of the 2000's we found the new beds a VAST improvement on hit & miss bedding in some Travelodges and at the sort of prices we paid would definitely stay again at this one!

Room Tip: Maybe best to ask for room on North/street side, as heard SOME early morning van/lorry noise servici...

I have stayed at the Atlantic Wharf Travelodge a number of times, and have sadly only had one good stay there (by good, I mean "normal").
To be fair the place has had a make-over, as i've had a couple of ripped sheets, and clumps of human hair in the folded up towels, as well as the usual bits falling apart in the bathroom (dodgy taps etc).
Part of the last stay was interrupted by some unsavory individuals who decided to have a fall out drunken conversation outside the door - followed by going in and out of rooms, slamming doors etc - this lasted from 11pm until 4am the next morning. I phoned down to reception at around half past midnight, but do not know if anyone went up to speak to them - judging by the way they carried on then I would think probably not. This I can appreciate is hard for the hotel to control... BUT this coupled with the fact that the window didn't close so on one side we had drunken conversation, followed by cars screeching, and other noises coming from the next door cinema complex meant that I had 2 hours sleep in total, and had to do a three hour journey the next morning.
Upon going to breakfast one of the staff who has been friendly to us before became very shirty when she asked us how we slept and we told her it was awful. She was quick to say "that's not my problem" and as I previously said, became very unfriendly. If you don't like the answer to a question then do not ask it, and FYI in customer service it is "your problem" if a customer is unhappy.
When we went to leave the two women behind the desk seemed to be watching us like a scene from a movie when the strangers walk into the bar, that was after they stopped whispering of course. Very professional, enough said. My other half had his say, rightly so, as the room still had issues despite it being supposedly "all new".
We walked around the bay but ended up leaving early because of the previously ruined night, and the final nail in the coffin was when we went to have our ticket validated to get out of the car park. We got to the gate and it said I had £202 to pay! I quickly pressed the button on the ticket machine at the side of the gate and a chap came on and I briefly explained that the hotel had validated the ticket. He told me this wasn't the case and we needed to go back to Travelodge and get them to do it again and said something along the lines "tell them to make sure the green light comes on when they do". So we apologised profusely to the car waiting behind, turned around and drove the less than 30 seconds back around to the hotels side of the car park, and my other half went in whilst I waited in our parked car. When he came out he was livid and told me that the same individual of the "it's not my problem" school of thought had basically called him a liar, saying she had validated the ticket the first time, that it was "impossible" to get a ticket with a price of £202 and told him to stop condescending her when he told her exactly what the man had said through the ticket machine. My other half, who is not a man to back down lightly on these kind of things, told her to phone him to which her response was apparently she'll call him later on her own time! I couldn't believe the cheek of it, if we were "lying" a) why would do it, waste our time going to the booth to come back, and b) how would we know how the validating machine worked?! We left Cardiff feeling it had ruined the end of our holiday, we were staying just overnight to finish on the "high" of a two week vacation, and we left feeling that it was one of the worst experiences ever.
So in a nutshell, well done Travelodge, you've managed to lose us for good now - we'll never return to one of your hotels again, and the stories of how awful you are will be told to friends and family with a strong response of "do not stay here". And I think your staff need some basic customer service management training in how to handle complaints, because whispering about your complaining customers, not liking it when they tell you (and not unreasonably) that they've had a bad night (when you have asked!!), and then basically telling them they are liars isn't going to win you any repeat custom!!

It's a Travelodge so you know what to expect but the staff are friendly and the rooms small but clean. It's in an excellent location in Cardiff Bay - walking distance to the WMC etc - and benefits from free parking. the bar/restaurant is small but with so much choice of food and drink on your doorstep - who cares? Snag a saver rate and enjoy!

Well what can I say about our stay in this Travelodge, never stayed in one before so very apprehensive. Room had had a total refurb, most comfortable bed I have ever slept in.
Did not mind paying the early check fee of £10 as we checked in at 9.45am and check in was 3.00pm. Receptionist very friendly and helpful.
Will definitely stay in another Travelodge, hope they are all this good.
Obviously only made for short stays, so you know what you have to expect.
Free parking was a god send.
