Went there on Valentine's Day evening for a meal with my partner. I'm half-Italian so never expect much when eating at Italian restaurants as they never taste authentic. I'd read & heard rave reviews about Merola's though & heard it being a bit of a hidden gem, so we thought we'd try it seeing as it's only a 2 min walk from home.
Firstly, I have to say the staff & owners seem lovely - can't fault them & they were very friendly. I wasn't so keen on the food though....not very 'Italian' (only a few basics, nothing out of the ordinary, not even a Caprese salad in sight!). Reminded me of canteen food. We had prawns and whitebait to start (both of which tasted frozen & served with an uninspired bit of salad on the side). I then had spaghetti Napolitano (not authentic tasting, not tomatoey enough, too much parsley - which it shouldn't even have, spaghetti seemed broken in half maybe to help the British?!). Partner had gnocchi with Carbonara sauce (ok but far too heavy on the parsley again & not cheesy enough). She then had profiteroles which seemed ok, and I had chocolate fudge cake which tasted of nothing but disinfectant! Had a Bailey's and an Amaretto to finish. All came to just under £50 for us both - ordinary price, ordinary food.
To summarise, nice people but wouldn't rush there again as food not great. My elusive hunt for a decent Italian in Cardiff continues...!
