“Tired in places but really good staff and great location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 29, 2013

The exterior of the hotel is somewhat dated looking but basically clean and sound and the same can be said of the reception area. The family room we had been allocated was way below the standard I would have expected; an old analogue style TV on a floor stand that meant you couldn't see it when sitting in bed and peeling wallpaper a couple of examples. However, the charming lady at reception very quickly arranged for us to move to one of the refurbished rooms. Much better room and very good to have a family room with a proper single bed not just a pull out. Spacious enough, excellent bathroom with sensible sized towels. The only problem was that it was SO hot, we just didn't get a decent night's sleep. The receptionist got hold of a fan for us but it was still so warm- just something to be aware of if you, like us suffer in the heat. The swimming pool and hot tub were fantastic, great facilities that were very clean and well managed and contributed to a greater sense of satisfaction overall than would have otherwise been the case. Breakfast was disappointing so we didn't eat in the hotel again but the bar area was well kept and a very comfortable space to enjoy a drink. Good location between Cardiff and Swansea with close prximity to all the main beach areas and loads of attractions. Overall we would probably stay here again but would insist on having a room further away from the pool and sauna area which apparently contribute to the heat in the rooms. Good family short break hotel and good value with the staff really deserving praise, every single one of them!

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the cooler parts of the building- they know some of the rooms are too hot.

Our room was a standard room as yet not refurbished but we could not find a fault with it. It was clean, tidy, and more than adequate for our needs. Staff cleaned our room thoroughly daily and changed the bedding daily as well due to em a muddy paw print when we were not looking.
Our dogs also found no fault and settled without problem a sure sign they were happy and comfortable.
The mood lit pool is fabulous and nothing is to much trouble for the young man who cleaned the area and looked after the pool during our stay asking if the water was warm enough etc.
The manager Mastaf I think he was called was lovely and again nothing was to much trouble he even set up a DVD in our room for our son at 10.30pm at night.
The food again was lovely freshly cooked and tasted great.
The gym is small but functional.
It is a shame that some customers don't behave well towards the staff.

A thank you also to Sheila I believe her name was on reception for being really helpful

If I had to find a negative it would be that there is no indoor seating area for dogs to sit with there owners for meals which we food difficult as our dogs go everywhere with us and did not like being left in the room on there own so we had to take turns to eat. However there was no problem from the staff in accommodating this

Room Tip: We stayed in room 22 as yet not refurbished but clean tidy and adequate

We stayed here recently and was very impressed by how professional and nice the staff were. My wife is yeast intolerant so was hungry after coming back from a party where she couldn't eat anything. The staff were very accommodating and rustled her up a salad no problem! They were also real well trained and made our stay lovely.

The facilities could do with a bit of updating but there are signs of refurbishment. We would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: choose a superior one they are worth the extra pounds

I think they would be better to stop bigging up the fact that 25% of the rooms have had a recent refurbishment and start paying attention to detail, as such a 'boast' interprets as 75% of occupants might be less than impressed...
This hotel is not a 'budget' hotel, but to be blunt, upon entry, had a budget meets 'Fawlty Towers' feel, which after a long haul flight has little comic value.

Ignored by reception upon arrival so hung about peering over the desk expectantly not wishing to interrupt the receptionists game of 'candy crush' or whatever they were glued to in handheld technology form. Fortunately colleagues aided carrying my assorted luggage to the room, which was just as well as no assistance was offered. The corridors smelled of an interested mergence of stale cigarette smoke and doctors waiting room. The door handle had sticky stuff on it so once in I headed to wash my hands.

The room itself did indeed resemble an old peoples home, but on the surface appeared clean and tidy enough. There were curious 'lumps' under the carpet, really not sure what they were...? The bathroom had peeling paint and tatty woodwork. Hidden behind the immaculately clean linen were pillows that smelt... well.... musty and were far from plump and head inviting. The TV was a curiously large antique which I can only assume was purposely chosen as its proportions would double as an anti theft device; I would have indulged their dedication to retro telly preservation had the front cover not been missing and the remote control fully working. I am going to hope that this was one of their 'older' style rooms on the updating list.

Food and dining all OK but in general I'm not sure who this hotels primary market focus is - If it's business class, then it needs to up its game. If it's holiday makers, well, I'd be plain devastated!

A bit of a let down by Best Western standards to be fair....

Room Tip: Ask specifically for one the 25% that have apparently been refurnished!!

Thank you for your review, I am sorry to hear you were disappointed with your bedroom. Our standard bedrooms have not been fully refurbished but are freshly decorated and are considered a good standard three star bedroom by the AA, Welsh Tourist Board and Best Western who all do annual inspections. The TV's as mentioned are currently of an old style in these rooms, but we are awaiting delievery of new LCD TV's, as soon as these arrive they will be fitted immediately.

I am happy to hear you enjoyed your meals and thought the hotel was very clean. I would hope that should you visit the area in the future you would stay at the hotel.

We stayed at the Heronston Hotel for 3 nights to finish off our holiday to South Wales.

First impressions were good in terms of friendliness and cleanliness. The room was comfortable however the TV was very dated with limited channels. In fact the response from our 7 year old was "oh no is it a black and white TV??", (it wasn't but it was old)

The pool area was lovely and we enjoyed a good many hours there. The hotel is close to beaches which was very handy.

On the downside, the food was very poor. The Chef did not appear to be able to poach or boil an egg as on each of our three breakfasts they were well overdone. The bread for toast was stale and on the first morning they ran out of juice. Had we not paid upfront for breakfasts in the package we would have eaten out. The waiting staff although keen, were shambolic in their service. On the last night we made the mistake of eating in the bar (due to one of our party having a very sensitive tummy which we suspect was due to the sausages at breakfast and not wanting to be too far from a toilet). Trying to get a glass of wine and a bowel of olives was painful. It took an hour to get our main course to us following two incorrect deliveries. The choice phrase of the waitress was "I don't know to be honest" when we asked questions such as "how much is the children's menu?" and "Do you know which table that meal should be at because it's not ours?". The sour cream that came with my meal looked and smelled like it had been out for hours so I did not risk eating it.
When we complained to reception about the food when checking out, his response was "I'd better get in there with a wooden spoon then hadn't I", not really the response we expected.

In conclusion, we probably would stay there again for the convenience, it's location and the use of the pool on a rainy day, however we would not eat there even if the meals were free!

Thank you for your review. I am pleased to hear you were happy with your room and the hotel facilities. I am sorry you feel disappointed with your breakfast meal and service, this is not the normal standard of the hotel and indeed we receive many compliments concerning our restaurant meals & service. I have discussed your comments with the head chef and restuarant manager. I hope you will return in the future so we are able to show you the true standards of the hotel.
