“Medieval Tower Block”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 19, 2006

Fantastic spot. Excellent walking from the door in an amazing valley. A real sense of being out of the way. Warm and clean but visitors have to be happy to have to go up and down medieval spiral staircases to get to and from the bathrooms - no ensuites. No TV either but that was an asset. How often do you get to stay in a real priory?

The location and the stunning building make up for any lack of modernity. Unsuitable for the infirm.

  • Liked — amazing location and building
  • Disliked — bathrooms
  • Tips/Secrets — This is a gem but don't go if you're infirm or insist on anything modern.

This hotel is built in one of the towers of this ruined priory up in the Black Mountains. You are about 16 miles from Hay along a steep winding road that runs through Gospel Pass and about 12 from Abergavenny in teh other direction. Offa's Dyke Path, is above you on the red hillside.

Dramatic setting, firendly welcome, excellent breakfasts and a lovely welcoming bar. Rooms 4 and 5 are in the tower with a narrow stone spiral staircase. If you want en-suite with TV and trouser press don't come here, but if you want the most spetacular setting possible, do!

The hotel is built into the ruins of an old abbey nestled in a beautiful valley not far from Hay's Bluff. Only five rooms, but they are set in one of the surviving abbey towers. Four poster beds take you back in time and the view from the window in the morning through the ruins is nothing short of fantasy.
