“Great atmosphere and friendly staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 11, 2013

We regularly visit the George, all year round. Yesterday, the outside courtyard was turned into a huge concert area, with different bands and jazz singers on all day and right up to midnight. The jazz festival this year has attracted tens of thousands of visitors and it is certainly the best one we have ever attended. The George had outside and indoor bars serving keg beers and real ale, from the Evan Evans Brewery. We could hardly move in the courtyard; it was heaving, and the atmosphere was great. We're going back for more today!

Had a day out in Brecon last Tuesday (6th August). Lovely little town right in the middle of the beautiful Beacons - of course! Plenty of Restaurants - chose the 'George Hotel' as we could see diners enjoying lunch in the conservatory section. I had Gammon with the 'thrice cooked' chips - best I've ever had! Emily had the Chicken Cajun and enthused especially about the vegetables - broad beans/peas and the chicken was lovely. Will certainly come again.

So I came here as my friend and I fancied a couple of days driving in north wales and walking around the town. We stayed Thursday 3rd august 2013.

Now the Plus points

We stayed in a standard double room with "free breakfast". The room was a very good size overlooking the main street. It had a sitting room area. The Bathroom was clean as was the whole room. We had a double bed and a single bed and plenty of space. The TV had your standard selection of freeview channels. The Bed was vert comfy and I slept very well. There was a good supply of clean towels. There where biscuits and hot beverages provided. The room felt more like a house than a hotel.

We stayed in the hotel bar till about 2300 and had a few drinks which where reasonably priced. They had a reasonable selection of non alcholic drinks. The staff where friendly enough and easy going. Plenty of places to sit. There inclusive wifi but I didn't use it so cant comment on that.

There was a buffet style breakfast and It was cooked freshly not left on a hot plate which is always very nice as not many hotels do this. Selection of fruit and cereal as well plus juices. Only complaint was that not much fresh fruit and the fruit could never be called "fresh" but tasted nice I must admit.

The dinner area was very nice I like it in a rustic kind of way.

Only a few negatives,

The gentleman at the front seemed a little blasé to begin with but came good. He simply handed the keys didnt bother to tell us the room was in the annexe not the main building. A very helpful lady helped.

Some fruit wasn't totally fresh could do with more. The bathroom was clean but a little tired. My friend had difficulty sleeping the locals where making a lot of noise. I slept fine however. So dont sleep by main road if your a light sleeper. No parking but parking behind the hotel was aplenty and something like a pound for a night. Not secure parking though, looked safe enough.

Overall nice hotel. Paid £70 for two with a late booking.

Room Tip: Anexe rooms are by the main road be careful if your a light sleeper. rooms above the number 10 if m...

Back again for the 3rd consecutive year and the service and food were as good as ever. Les and his team were very friendly and attentive. The food was excellent, rooms were clean and well presented.
Will definitely book again next year.

We stayed at The George on a Saturday night. We had a ceremony to attend nearby on the Sunday morning and thought we would stay to avoid an early start from home.

The hotel is ok. As others have said the nearest car park is a pay one where you cannot pay for more than two hours but after 6 pm it is free until 8 am the next morning and as long as you deposit a £1 coin after 6pm that extends to 10am.

We ate in the restaurant and the choice of food was good as was the quality. The breakfast the next morning was also good.

Brecon is a very nice, welcoming and friendly town in the light of day.

Ok. Now the bad part. It is Saturday night. darkness falls. There is a club nearby. It was warm and muggy.

The music finished at 2 am. The screaming and shouting outside of our window was still going on at 4am. We eventually fell to sleep to be woken At 6.45 by the street cleaning truck clearing up the mess.

I recorded some of this on my iPhone and I now realise TripAdvisor needs an audio download facility as well as photos because without hearing it you would never believe it. When I played it back at reception they were aghast and commented it sounded like a party in our room. Yes it did. Evidently the management of this hotel has complained to the council before to no avail. Also, evidently, the police are not interested.

These rooms (in the annex) are not habitual if this club is open and should not be sold at all. How this club is allowed to get away with this beats me but it does.

The hotel management were very sorry and reduced our bill by 25%. As we would have, and this is not an exaggeration, had a better sleep in the car this really wasn't enough but frankly we were to tired to argue.

Room Tip: Do NOT stay in the annex. Especially at a weekend.

My husband and I spent a day out in Brecon today and wanted a nice lunch. We choose the George as the menu looked good and the courtyard allowed us to enjoy the weather.
We both chose the Mussels, and were bitterly disappointed with the meals. The cost was £12.95 and the portion sizes were tiny. Basically a bread roll, a few plain salad leaves and 16 mussels - yes 16 for a main course, They were served on a wooden board with a desert bowl for the mussels, the finger bowl was about the same size.

We both left hungry and dissappointed, and wished we had eaten somewhere else. I would recommend avoiding unless you are on a diet.

Friendly nice hotel with fantastic evening meals and breakfasts. Welsh lamb was excellent! Room 22 was large and perfect for recovering after lots of walking! Good location for exploring Brecon and the beautiful Brecon Beacons.
