“Not a place I would hurry back to”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 29, 2012

First things first, the staff at the George Hotel were generally friendly and helpful. The breakfast was excellent, the portion sizes in the restaurant enormous and the free Wi Fi was really strong, connecting easily and strongly.

However, there were a number of things about the hotel that were "not quite right": for example:
1) We found the reception and stairs area dark, unwelcoming and a little careworn.
2) There were no batteries in the TV remote control.
3) The toilet bowl in our room needed a dose of Viakal (or disinfectant).
4) The TV screen was probably the smallest I have ever seen in a hotel room.
5) The toilet and en-suite was carpeted.
6) The ceilings did not insulate the noise from the room above - every footstep could be heard.
7) The uneven floor in the bedroom was disconcerting (although it was expected given earlier reviews on Trip Advisor).

None of these items are showstoppers but, taken together, they present a picture of a hotel that could be so much better and, given the prices charged, probably should be. Because of this, the George Hotel is not one to which I would hurry back.

I've been to this pub on many occasions & have always been impressed with the food, drinks and service. Lovely conservatory & small but nice outside terrace. Great vibe here for the Fringe festival.

My husband & I recently hired the function room for our wedding drinks reception. Eleanor & her team could not have been more helpful - they were excellent hosts and we couldn't have hoped for a better service.

I come regularly for morning coffee, sometimes lunch, or a pint, and occasionally supper. Staff are fun and friendly and the food is great with very reasonable prices.
Haven't stayed here since 2004 so I can't comment on the rooms, but as far as everything else go's you can't go wrong here.

Lovely hotel with bags of character, freindly staff, very good service. Breakfast is the best you can get.

Stayed in the annexe, which could do with a lick of paint and a new television. However very comfortable and spacious. Free wifi which is an added bonus.
Brecon town is just lovely and very good shops and walks. Reasonable rate per night.

Room Tip: Stay in the main hotel, annexe needs an up date.

Hotel had lots of character, Rooms were spacious and authentic (sloping floors, creaking floorboards!). Service was excellent. Hotel went out of their way to serve us a cooked breakfast 30 minutes before the official breakfast start time. Centrally located. My room was in the annexe and suffered from street noise (people, not cars)until the early hours of Saturday morning.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the main hotel that is not facing the street.

This is a super hotel, just off the main road, centrally located in Brecon. The room was clean and well furnished and the floor is quaintly uneven. It was a very quiet room that I stayed in and the bed was superbly comfortable. The shower was nicely poweful and the towels clean and soft.
The food here however is totally delicious. We had a family evening meal and the cheesy garlic bread was the best I think I've ever eaten. The food was generously portioned and served very hot and fresh. The staff were courteous and well versed in the menu. Also, the kitchen accomodated one of our party who wanted a salad and it was beautifully presented. The breakfast was likewise fresh and tasty with plenty of choice.
The area has a lot to do including boat trips, canal tours and walking and mountian biking. The shops are great and I would really love to come back and stay again.
Checkout was fast and efficient. The car ark at the back of the hotel is a pay and display, but if you get a ticket after 6pm, it takes you through until 10 am the next morning leaving plenty of time for a lazy check out. I would really recommend this very well priced hotel.

Room Tip: The rooms in the main building are quieter.
