“A friendly, welcoming hotel with fabulous views of the beacons”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 19, 2009

The staff could not be more helpful and friendly . I found the layout of the bar and lounge area was ideal for us as a large party. Our room was clean and compact with great views over Brecon and the Beacons. Breakfast was served efficiently and the staff did not mind catering for some late comers. All in all a great overnight stay and I would highly recommend this hotel for the friendly staff and ideal location.

i stayed at the hotel last week and i was impressed by the surroundings and the hotel itself. Both the waiting and reception staff were more than helpful. The only worrying point was that there seemed to be no figurehead on duty after eight at night and the hotel was left in the hands of a group of under twenty year olds. A hotel of this size should always have a figurehead on duty either in the shape of a manager or under manager in order to deal with any undesirable characters (one of which was loitering in the bar at around ten o clock)

what a glorious looking hotel in fantastic surroundings, thats the positives out of the way.extremely disappointing inside, the rooms are incomplete, advertise cable t.v,but all you get is grainy bb1,2,& itv.was expecting something special in the restaurant, totally disappointed again,a very poor pub menu that is very bland & boring, after reading the hotel comments book, was anticipating something special.as the saying goes, don"t judge a book by the cover.i would not recommend the hotel, but brecon is worth a visit

A group of us stayed here for the weekend at the beginning of March and emailed our rooming and menu choices beforehand. The manager and receptionists all made us feel very welcome and nothing was too much trouble. They had set out a large table for our dinner and the food and wine was excellent. The Castle is a large hotel and the new owners are busy renovating so one of the rooms didn't have a TV, but apart from that everything seemed clean and tidy. It was really the staff who made our stay, the venue is great but everyone there was so friendly and helpful, we really enjoyed our visit.

Wow where to start...

Room - First impressions small & cold but clean. But then at night the room literally started shaking, this hotel is so old that the wind shakes it to the foundations. The light fitting is poorly fixed so that it the bulbs and frame crash together constantly. This lasted between 10-2am.... then at 8am we are woken by drilling and refurb being done in the hotel (8am on Sunday arrrgh!)..

Restaurant - So bad it was funny. Were told we could only eat at 7.15.... not quite sure why as no one had our table before or after this... the service is muddled with 2 managers running round doing the same job in different directions. Food was terrible. 3 greying prawns for starters in a sauce that they hadn't been cooked in so weren't marinated at all, main courses were abysmal... beef stew was far worse than my Mum's and she's the worst cook I know.... Rice pudding for desert was the culinary lowpoint though, rice wasn't cooked so was so hard it couldn't even be chewed, served up with some toxic rhubarb compote that looked and tasted radioactive.. How a chef can be happy to serve this to customers is highly indicative of the amount of care this place has for it's guests..
Oh and this is £20 a head for 3 courses (they didn't even bring bread!!!), I've eaten in many bad restaurants but this is by far the worst dining experience in many years.

After the fiasco the night before we didn't expect too much from breakfast... the hotel didn't surprize us. Arrived to find no eggs or bacon. These were brough out 1-2 at a time by the manager in his suit, whilst loudly proclaiming more eggs/more bacon. People were literally queuing for them like breakfast at school... AWFUL.

This hotel isn't cheap at 100 quid b&b, please avoid so this review wasn't in vain.
