“Much Better than last year.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 15, 2010

Had a lovely few days here and must say that it has improved to quite a good hotel.
The breakfasts where good and plentiful and the bar meals OK for the price.
Most of the staff where pleasant and helpful too ,WELL DONE!

My husband and I visited on a Travelzoo package-£127 for 2 night's B&B, free 3 course dinner on the first night, 20% off dinner on the second night, free bottle of wine, free afternoon tea, 2 entry tickets to Caernarfon Castle. We were already familiar with the hotel, having used the bar for drinks during a visit to Llanberis, so we were prepared for the tired appearance of the interior. However the bedrooms are clean and modern, with a bed so huge, I needed binoculars to see my husband! The service at dinner on the first night was very good, however the food was very average. We decided at this point not to use our 20% off voucher for the second night, preferring to eat out elsewhere. The breakfast was excellent, good choice from the buffet, and hearty cooked food. Our experience of 'afternoon tea' however was just a joke. The barman took his time in serving us, but not before he had sneezed over the bottles in the chill cabinet! Our tea came in the form of teabags on the bar, with flasks of hot water provided. The food consisted of half a scone, 1 grey looking welshcake and 2 tiny pieces of fruit cake that looked and tasted dry. Hardly an afternoon tea, avoid disappointment and don't bother using your voucher. Would I recommend a stay here-yes, for £127, it's a bargain

we had a good value deal that included a dinner and a tea. The staff and room were very pleasant but the food was not. The afternoon tea could not even include a welsh cake each when asked. The location is good but I would not recommend here. It dealt with the three large groups staying here well and still managed to treat us private guests as individual - pity about the food.

The good service of this hotel showed before we even checked in by the excellent directions they gave to find the place. The welcome was warm, friendly and efficient even though the receptionist had only worked there two days. This service from reception continued throughout our 2 night stay. The service was equally good in the restaurant even though they were very busy.

The room was bright , spotlessly clean and comfortable with enough room to store our clothes. It had a radiator we could adjust and a window we could open! It had been decorated and had a new modern bathroom. It took us by surprise after the Victorian reception and bar areas. We could see the beginning of the footpath up Snowdon we were to walk the following day.

The location of the hotel was in a lovely garden, on a hillside looking down to the village and lake. The Snowdon Mountain Railway is a two minute walk away and the main village 5 minutes walk. There are plenty of cafes, pubs and little shops, tourist information and a museum in the village.

The food was good and we ate in the restaurant both nights. There was a choice of dishes for vegetarians and the fantastic breakfast offered a huge variety both in the cold buffet (including fresh fruit; different breads, muffins etc; meat) and the cooked breakfasts. The cooked breakfast was mainly grilled - no fat - and served piping hot so that the staff had to wear white gloves to serve it.

We went on a Travel Zoo deal and it was amazing value for money.

My partner and I stayed here for 2 nights Sunday and Monday, in October. We were welcomed by a very friendly receptionist who went out of her way to make us feel very welcome.
The room was nice and clean with everything we needed and would expect from a hotel.
All staff were friendly and helpful.
The evening meal on our 1st night was very nice, we both ate everything and had no complaints. We didn't have to wait long for our food either.
Breakfast was beyond our expectations, there was a vast choice of cereals fruits meats cheeses and of course a full english which was gorgeous! And once again the service was wonderful, staff went out of their way to be polite and helpful.
The bar area was ok, but we didn't stay in there for too long in the evening.
The village and area surrounding the hotel was beautiful! Perfect for walking and climbing Snowdon of course.
We would have no hesitation in coming to stay here again and would certainly recommend the hotel to friends and family.
Oh, the bed was the BEST! So comfortable :o)
If we had any critisism at all it would be that the heating was really hot, we could turn it down in the room, which was good, but the rest of the hotel was roasting!!
All in all, we were very very happy. Thanks, Catherine & Ged xx

This is a Victorian hotel (built 1830, but a more modern extension has been added) with a lot of history and in an excellent location, especially for Snowdon. I don't expect too much from British hotels - Brits generally don't have the right personality to put the customer first, they just do a job. But here, although only a 3-star grade, they are trying to offer a better service though not always succeeding. They were offering a special package through Travelzoo and, by and large, they fulfilled their commitments well. The room was clean, nice and warm with a good window ventilation, quiet and a good quality ensuite. The TV was old but worked perfectly. Dinner on the first night was included in the package but it was very good and so we were happy to book it again for the second night and again it was very good and reasonably priced. Breakfast couldn't be faulted either with plenty of variety and a nicely cooked full English breakfast (something we always miss when we're abroad). There were plenty of dining staff to keep things under control, and replenish items and clean tables, etc. So what was the negative? Definitely the fact they allowed dogs in the rooms and there were a few there of all shapes and sizes. Although there was some yapping heard in the evening, they didn't really disturb us. The room didn't have signs of previous dog occupation but it was disconcerting to think of them, especially the big ones, in the room. They are not clean animals especially after a walk in the mountains!
