“Comfortable but needs a Refurbishment”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 7, 2013

We stayed at this hotel for three nights over Easter in a superior room. The room was large with a sleigh bed but the mattress was lumpy and needed upgrading. On the first morning we could get hot water to the bath, but not the shower, however this was rectified during the day. The bathroom was fitted with a sensor light which was quite annoying if one moved an arm during the night. The room was very warm but we were able to open windows to allow for fresh air. We ate at the Grill for two of the three nights and the food was great however we ate in the restaurant on one night and ordered fish and chips. This meal included three very large pieces of battered fish which was far too much to consume for either of us. This hotel is in a beautiful location in the Snowdonia national park and with a good refurbishment it would be hard to beat.

We had a lovely walk to the Miners bridge and back and had parked outside the Royal Oak Hotel, paid £2 into a temperamental pay and display machine. The deal was you paid for parking and then if you ate at the Royal Oak you had the parking money refunded. So we did. I expected better for some reason, there is a very nice lounge/bar that does teas, coffee and snacks like duck wraps etc , scones and cream. There is also a 'café grill' with neon lights sign above the entrance and what looked like 'a milk bar'. This is a child friendly place but we chose to have tea coffee, cream scones in the lounge and they were very nice and the chairs and sofas comfy.

We stayed for a long weekend from the 8th March and loved the place. The first impression was that nothing was too much trouble for the staff. Every query was met with a smile and a can-do attitude. We never had to wait for a table or even a drink at the bar, as soon as we were noticed we were served with a smile every single time. We ate there every night and made full use of the "specials" that are advertised on the blackboard behind the bar and provided excellent value for money. As a smoker I spent quite a lot of time outside with a drink at the Stables Bar on very cold March evenings. However all tables have a very welcome heater just above and within moments of sitting down a lovely sheepskin rug was provided for sitting on :) . Ample car parking space and i can heartily recommend an afternoon cream tea. We will definitely be back. Soon.

We know and love this area and we had eaten at the Royal Oak Grill a couple of times before, and knew the food would be excellent, so no surprises there. However, on the spur of the moment we decided to stay over that night. The staff were great and did us a great deal for BnB in a room in the recently refurbished Stable Lodge. Unfortunately, they neglected to tell us that the air conditioning plant was right under the window and it was noisy! The room was excellent in all other respects but because of the noise we hardly slept at all. And let's face it, that's the main reason for staying in a hotel! We would stay again but not within earshot of the AC plant!

Room Tip: Avoid room 108 and any others close to the plant room behind the Stables Lodge. If you're on a...

We were staying in Betws Y Coed this week, and chose the Grill Room at the Royal Oak Hotel for a nice evening meal. It was a freezing March evening, so we could choose our table from anywhere in the restaurant.

Some negatives first: the hotel did not serve the pear cider we asked for; I ordered a side of green beans with my meal......and the waitress returned some time after our order to say that the kitchen had run out; my wife had ordered a rib-eye steak (one of her favourite meals)......and the same waitress then returned to say that the kitchen had run out of those too........

So not a good start, although the restaurant did then fully redeem itself with an excellent meal.

We chose the Thai fishcakes and the melon to start. Both were really good, with a special mention for the sorbet that accompanied the melon.

For main courses we had the sirloin steak with chips, and lamb with red cabbage and dauphinoise potatoes. The steak was excellent, as we would expect with it having been aged at a local Welsh butchers. The lamb dish was absolutely fantastic; thick slices of perfectly cooked lamb with lovely red cabbage and potato and leek dauphinoise potatoes, and a gorgeous gravy to round it off perfectly. One of the best dishes I have eaten for a long time.

Would definitely recommend the Grill Room at the Royal Oak. We have eaten there a few times over the last 2-3 years, and the food is always excellent.

Would have liked those green beans wrapped in pancetta though........

an excellent stay.the hotel was quiet but a really friendly and motivated team created a lovely warm atmosphere.
the hotel has benefitted from considerable investment and feels expensive for its star rating.
we stayed in room 203 which was clean warm and spacious.
we ate for three nights in the grill room. a blackboard advertises what farm supplies which meat and the menu specified the source for seafood. again the food was better than we expected.
would return with pleasure.

Room Tip: go for room 203

Brilliant hotel to see North Wales, loads to do and wonderful scenery everywhere. Intersting little village with shops and cafes. We had booked another hotel but that was so bad we walked out .We just walked in to the Royal Oak and we were greeted by such a friendly receptionist and so helpful it was such a relief. The rooms were lovely and the cooked breakfast was delicious, but chioce of cereals and fresh fruit was a bit limited. We had 2 rooms for 2 couples and all 4 of have said we will return to The Royal Oak Hotel.

Room Tip: I have to admit we were upgraded to 2 luxury rooms. The staff were so friendly and super efficient...
