“Location location location...and a good hotel!!!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 2, 2012

Hotel is very good. Parking on site - easy access with a lift at the back of the building and lovely bars and restaurants. Room was not large but not too small either. Nice décor and a really lovely bathroom with floor to ceiling natural stone tiles and modern facilities. Bed was very comfortable. The food in the bar/grill room was exceptional. Main restaurant was not open and at first we were disappointed because the menu looked so nice...but the food we had was outstanding and very reasonably priced with a large selection to choose from.
Beautiful location. Betws Y Coed is a hidden gem. One main street with lots of interesting shops set amongst gorgeous scenery and mountains with a small river running through, right opposite the hotel. Nice for a walk after dinner even on a winters evening. Would recommend this place and would definitely stay again.

Room Tip: Stairs and no lift in the main building but there is a lift in the stable accommodation (budget room...

I have not stayed here, but have eaten many times in The Grill Bar. The food here is excellent. try the Welsh Mountain Lamb - served on a wooden board with Gratin Dauphinoise potatoes with leek and pickled red cabbage. It is fantastic! Also very nice sandwiches for something smaller at lunchtime.

We have stayed at Royal Oak Lodge over many years now and returned once again in October. We book-ended a trip to London to visit family, with two nights. As always we found the staff welcoming and friendly; the room comfortable, clean and bright and the food in the grill tastefully and freshly presented. We left to catch the ferry back to Ireland determined to return to a place where we can relax and take in the destinations we have grown to appreciate (Bodnant Garden, Trefriw Mill, Llandudno, Plas Newydd. Snowdonia and Betws-y-coed itself).

Had an excellent lunch here. With many places empty it was good to see the restaurant well populated and comfortable. The 2 course set menu was good value and arrived promptly. My only criticism is customers did not know whether to wait to be seated or find their own table. There is no bar or reception desk at the entrance leaving potential customers switching from one room to another trying to work out the system while the busy waitresses were very slow to pick up on the obvious confusion and in some cases seemed to ignore them. Apart from that hiccup, the service was very good.

We were on a day visit to Betws-y-coed and decided to eat at this hotel,it looks very impressive,on entering we spotted the Trip Advisor award certificate of 4 and a half stars,so naturally assumed must be good. We ate in the grill bar as the main restaurant is closed Sunday. We had leek and potatoe soup which was delicious. I then order paella wrong move it was cooked with basmati rice???????,and tasted dreadful. However when the lovely waitress who had served us asked was everything ok,I did tell her it was awful lots of chicken which was dry very little seafood. Bless her she said there would be no charge and would I like to order something else. I decided to have another starter as opposed to a main I had the gravalax served with a small dressed salad it was lovley. I mentioned to the waitress to inform the chef to use paella rice for the future A bit of a let down really I also noticed quite a few people had to wait some time for food..

All guest feedback is important to us; we listen and examine everything that customers have to say at all times as it is only by listening to them, can we ensure that we are consistently meeting expectations. Our Grill room serves the following dish as quoted "Seafood & Chicken Paella - chorizo, squid, mussels, king prawns & chicken breast strip cooked with saffron basmati rice". We have taken a practical approach to the specification of this dish by acknowledging on the menu, displayed both inside and outside the Hotel, that Basmati rice is used.

We were in a 40+ coach party of elderly people, prebooked for dinner having previously made individual meal choices.
Almost all of us had to wait at least 20 minutes for the veg. to be served while our meals got cold and a few were left for another 10 for their main dish, so their veg was cold! The comment from one waitress was that she only had one pair of hands! A 'medium size glass of wine" came in a very large glass with a very small amount of wine costing £4.
There were 2 ladies' toilets, one OUT OF ORDER and the other unable to flush!
NEVER AGAIN!

The team and I were very disappointed to read this particular feedback since the group in question paid without question, left a good tip and gave a round of applause to the service team after deserts. We monitor all guest feed back to ensure service standards are being met at all times. We offer 3 official measures of wine (125, 175 and 250ml) all of which can be served in the same glass as it is the measure not the glass which is the control. Our red wine glasses are generous to properly accommodate a 250ml measure. Accordingly, we accept that a 125 measure may appear small by comparison but remains a valid measure. We have 5 red house wines available from £3.00 upwards, providing a good choice of quality wine. The main meal choice was either Roast Organic Beef or Salmon served with a risotto. Whilst we had allowed for vegetables with the Beef, we had not anticipated a request for vegetables with the salmon because of its risotto accompaniment. However, we accommodated the request as soon as we could and without extra charge. It is very regrettable that we appeared to failed to meet the expectations of one individual when the overall impression from the party appeared to be so positive, with even the chef being asked for the risotto recipe.

Disapointed is the only word I would use, but potentially it could of been very nice. For the price of the room, £180 per night I would of expected to have bottled water in the room, propper coffee, more recent decoration better house keeping and generaly a better feel to the room.
The food is good but the portions are way to big - quality not quantity is what needs to be achieved all the produce is local so make it special not a mission to finish. Breakfast was OK but for the price I dont expect to be making my own toast........ and why oh why are the free range eggs drowned in cream for the scrambled eggs????
The staff are very nice and friendly.
A shame really, £490 for two nights and two dinners for myself and my wife - very expensive and will not use again or recomend.

Room Tip: Dont pay the extra and go for 208 its not worth it. very, very poor value for money
