“Excellent Food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 5, 2010

We didn't stay here but ate here a couple of times during our stay over Easter. This was the first place that wasn't crowded on a rainy Good Friday so with two grumpy, cold, wet children we headed in. On first glance the place looked a bit tired and I was a bit worried that the food might not be good. But how wrong was I?! The food was excellent, I had the home made steak pie and it was gorgeous. My kids had the sausage and mash and it was a proper sausage, not just a cheap one that are usually given to kids from a kids menu. By the end of the meal our grumpy one year old was giggling at the staff who were making a fuss of him.

The second time we went I had the pie again as I had enjoyed it so much the first time and my partner had the cheese burger, which again was hand made not just something cheap out of a packet.

I can't rate the accommodation but if they even put half as much effort in to it as they do the food then it should be a quality place to stay.

Didnt stay here, but we had evening meal twice in the bar. Food was excellent, the first time I tried the pan-fried salmon on a bed of parmesan flavoured risotto, while my wife had a lovely steak and ale pie. The next time I tried the pie and my wife had a delicous lamb shank.

There was a restaurant attached with the same menu, but the bar had such a good atmosphere we preferred it there.

Although the bar area is still bit old fashioned the restaurant has been recently refitted but most importantly the food is terrific - good combination of local produce with French flair and great with kids as you can have a proper meal and still let the kids have (home made) nuggets and chips! There are plenty of places in Betws y Coed still serving up typical tourist fodder so this is one place worth a visit

My husband booked this hotel for 2 nights as a suprise for my birthday. Hotel was lovely and clean. The popularity of the hotel was evident when we couldn't eat there on either night! The restaurant was fully booked and there were no spare seats in the bar area to have bar food. Worth booking a table for the restaurant when you book your room. Also there is no parking at the hotel - we had to park in the public car park down the road which is only small so can be a problem in the height of the season

We stayed in the hotel for initially 1 night, which turned to 2 then 3. This hotel was welcoming from the start. The food smelt excellent as we walked in. The rooms were very clean, comfortable and even had 2 arm chairs and a table by the window to watch the river & world roll by. The owners were marvellous ! Bethan cooks the most amazing food while Antoine bends backwards to ensure you are ok... Nothing seems to be to much trouble. The ales are well kept. Well done to you both.....

My husband and myself recently stayed at this hotel for 1 night as a birthday treat. The hotel was slightly dated but very clean and comfortable. Parking is a big problem as it can only accomodate about 3 cars, although there is a car park just across the road for people visiting the area. However what made this hotel such a fantastic stay was the hospitality of the owners and the most outstanding food we have had for a very long time. The evening atmosphere was brilliant with a local group playing and singing in the welsh language. I would highly recommend this hotel as a reasonably priced base for sightseeing or an active holiday in the most beautiful countryside that I have ever seen.

We stayed here for a long weekend (4 nights) with our almost 3 yr old and the real appeal of this hotel is how friendly the owners are. They were so lovely to our daughter making her her own little pot of hot chocolate at breakfast and not batting an eye lid when she was loud or grumpy.

The hotel is a number of comfy rooms above a cosy pub bar and a smarter looking restaurant and is situated on the main road which can be busy at times (but having stayed here before we knew this and all the hotels in the village do suffer from road noise). We didn't eat in the hotel other than the lovely breakfast but the food did look really nice so if we returned we would try their evening meals.

The room was cleaned each day and the family room we stayed in was on the top floor (so no bar noise) and the child bed was a real bed not a sofa as so often happens.

We have stayed in another smarter hotel in Betws y Coed and found it very unfriendly, The Pont y Pair may be a little more homely but I would rather a friendly welcome any day. Oh and we took our dog with us and there was no extra charge.
