“Work in progress”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 4, 2014

We stayed 2 nights - we were doing some walking in the National park and it was a great base. The hotel is clearly under refurbishment. The downstairs has been done, it still needs some softening as it all floorboards and newness, few soft furnishing would make it feel more cosy. The room we got was poor - although clean bedding - the bathroom had a bath which was in a terrible state, small with the sink in the bedroom not the bathroom. There are a few little thing s that could make the difference, biscuits/tea facilities in the room were sparse and a bit rough. Breakfast was good but not using packets of butter and jam sachets/plastic pots would be more reflective of the effort that has been made on the decor. Staff were all very pleasant and helpful. I wish them luck in the continued refurb and would like to visit again one day to see how it ended up.

Room Tip: ask for one that has been refurbished - wish I had

Thank you for taking time to review the Gwydyr Hotel. We are indeed work in progress as our website and reviews suggest. The bedrooms and bathrooms are part of our ongoing renovation works. I am sorry that you did not enjoy the butter and jam portions at breakfast or the complimentary tea tray in your room, your comments have been duly noted. Thank you once again for your valued feedback.

We stayed at the Gwydyr for our mini moon last week. We had just got married in chester and wanted somewhere to stay that wasn't too far away.
Upon our arrival, we were presented with a beautifully refurbished room and bathroom. Our stay was made even more perfect when we were treated to a 'just married' card, flowers and chilled prosecco! What a treat! That certainly helped our stay to start well. All of the staff were made aware that our stay was a special celebration - they were all so very lovely! The restaurant looked great and our breakfast the next morning was super (made even better by having gluten free bread for my husband)

All in all, the Gwydyr hotel is a beautiful place and we can't wait to see the hotel once the remaining refurbishments awe complete. A true gem!

Room Tip: A little gem!

We only popped in for lunch, but we enjoyed a very good meal here.
The pate we had for starter was excellent, and the quantity was perfect. I would guess it was made by the chef rather than bought in.
The roast dinner of Welsh lamb was also excellent. The lamb was beautifully soft and tender.
The staff were all very friendly and helpful.
The meal took a little while to arrive, but the menu clearly states that all the meals are cooked freshly by the chef to order, so we didn't have a problem with that, and it was certainly worth the wait.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write a review on your dining experience at the Gwydyr Hotel. We are so delighted you enjoyed your Sunday Lunch. You were quite correct in your assumption that the Pate was indeed homemade on the premises. We do not specialise in fast food so our food takes a little longer to get to the table, however it is freshly prepared to order and we hope that is reflected in the flavour and presentation. Thank you once again.

The Gwydyr Hotel is a gem within the gem that is Betws-y-Coed!
A family-run business, Dawn and Rob are giving a formerly tired hotel a thorough upgrade and a generous dose of tender loving care.
The first thing that struck us was the wonderful attitude of the staff. Rob showed us to our room, explained that the hotel was being renovated and made sure that we had all we needed.
The room was fine, considering that it seemed to have seen years of neglect. When we mentioned after our first night that the mattress was uncomfortable they changed it that day, explaining that they simply don't have the time to check every one that they inherited from the previous owners. Other than that everything was great.
The hotel has preserved a period atmosphere from earlier ages, and the owners are thoroughly modern in their outlook.
Dining room was a pleasure. We had the continental breakfasts which were delicious, and included a good fruit salad every day.
The staff are marvellous. No request was too much.
Be aware that the hotel is being gradually renovated: they have started with the ground floor (reception, bar, dining room) and are gradually bringing the rooms up to scratch.
With the present attitude of the staff, they're going to do fine!
Although it didn't apply to us, they are very dog-friendly, but they have the sense to know that not all guests are. Dog owners have their separate dining room with the dog!
No lift. No safe or fridge in room.

The new owners of this hotel are current in the process of bringing the facilities up to stretch after many years of apparent neglect. And they are doing a wonderful job. Yes, things are still a bit rough around the edges, but our room was spotlessly clean, and the owners and all of their staff were exceptionally friendly and extremely accomodating. Betws-y-Coed is a great town to stay in Snowdonia, and I'd recommend the Gwydyr to any of my friends without hesitation.

You kind of know what to expect when you enter your room to find a burnt iron print on the carpet... I gave them the benefit of doubt as they apologised for it... The bath looked as though it had been painted as chippings were floating in the water and it was only big enough for a small child. We were also unlucky to learn that there was entertainment on that night which could be heard until fairly late. We felt a little cheated to learn that breakfast was not included in the 'bed and breakfast' price. The breakfast wasn't great.Other places in the area, such as Aberconwy House, pride themselves on good welsh produce but you could tell that the food here was not the best quality.
Overall the place looks nice and welcoming but didn't live up to the price of the room in my opinion.

Thank you for taking the time to review The Gwydyr Hotel. I am sorry that you did not enjoy the acoustic guitar and couple singing. We will notify the booking sites when we have entertainment so that guests are informed that there will be some additional noise until 11.30 pm allowing them to make an informed choice on whether to continue with their booking. We will also ensure that the internet booking sites are clearer in their administration at the time of booking when describing the reservation as room only with no meal option to ensure other guests do not feel the same. We are aware that many of the bedrooms and bathrooms require updating and these will be addressed as part of our continued refurbishment works which are on going for 2014/15, however we feel the room rate of £65.00 reflects the work required and equals value for money when compared to the rates of other B&Bs, Guest Houses and hotels in Betws y Coed. Thank you once again for your valued feedback.

Having visited the Gwydr countless times from in the 1960s with my parents up to the present day with my son and his partner I've seen the good times and the not so good. So I was thrilled to bits to see what the new owners Rob and Dawn have achieved during the past 18 months. The whole place is warm with wood burning stoves in all the downstairs rooms which have been newly decorated and upgraded most successfully. They are excellent hosts, aided by the lovely Karen, who all manage to create a welcoming atmosphere. Nothing is too much trouble.
The kitchen is being upgraded but the food on offer was delicious and cooked with care and I'm looking forward to my next visit to see what the next phase of the up-grading has achieved. With Dawn and Rob's aim to be sensitive to the traditions and history of the building I'm sure it's going to be really splendid. Keep the good work folks and hope to see you again soon.
