If I say that I liked my visit to Wales, I would say nothing. This was a real adventure that totally impressed me and that gave a possibility to discover this beautiful country and wonderful people living there.
I actually was visiting London in May this year (2009). Before coming there, I thought of going to Wales as never been there before, but almost nobody believed in this adventure except one of my colleagues who advised me to visit the region of Snowdonia and he got right to the point – this gave me unforgettable impressions I ever had!
Everything was spontaneous. No preliminary arrangements, neither reservations made before.
Right before leaving London for Wales, I called several B&Bs in Wales and one called ’Tan Dinas Country House’ answered. The Lady called Eileen was very kind to propose me to meet me at the train station.
My journey from London to Wales, to a place called Betws-Y-Coed – some people don’t even know how to pronounce it correctly – deserves a special attention. First of all, there are no trains going there directly. So you change twice before getting to the destination. First you change at Chester (England) and then in Llandudno (Wales) – actually the place where Lewis Carroll wrote his ‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland’ but that’s another story. Before getting to Llandudno, you feel like you are traveling as everywhere else. But in Llandudno the adventure starts as you take a 2-car old-style train and start to feel like in a fairy tale and this feeling accompanies you everywhere in Snowdonia. That scenery that you see from the window of the train is amazing. The colors are so bright that in combination with the sun, it gives you sometimes pain in your eyes – unusual feeling for people coming from Metropolises. By the way, the whole journey from London to Betws-Y-Coed makes only 4 hours.
So ‘Tan Dinas Country House’ – a small ‘castle’ right in the forest near a small river where you are more that welcome by the house keepers Eileen and John taking care about you as of a member of their family. Special attention to the breakfasts you can have there – 2 options: Traditional Welsh breakfast (after you need to move a lot!) and ‘Eileen’s special’ with unforgettable omelet with salmon. While the breakfast is under preparation, you can have any advice you wish on visiting Snowdonia from Eileen (she knows amazingly well the region) and discuss with other people staying in the ‘House’ – that’s how I met the members of Eileen’s and John’s family who were staying there at the same time.
Being passionate by hiking I certainly asked Eileen whether I could hike somewhere in Snowdonia, and as it turned out (I should admit I did not know that before) there is a Snowdon mountain (1085 m of height) there, the second highest mountain in the UK. And that’s where my adventure continued. Having some experience in hiking, I felt like I was learning something new on that point climbing Snowdon. The mountain was quite aggressive to the point that if you don’t feel like going there, you better not go. However I was confident of getting to the summit. The wind was sometimes so violent that I felt like facing a wall, furthermore I was get several times 2-3 steps behind by it without any possibility to control it, so powerful the wind was! Snowdon is not the easiest mountain to hike, though not being the highest one, however the nature and the spirit it is surrounded by make you feel happy!
