“Fantastic Birthday Getaway”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 31, 2013

Absolutely the best birthday retreat I have ever had was spent last month in the River Dee room at the White Water Hotel. Whether is was watching the sun rise behind the pictorial scene over the Castell Dinas Bran or relaxing to the soothing and tranquil sounds of the river just a few feet below on our private balcony, I could not have asked for a more perfect stay. From the moment we arrived, the staff greeted us warmly and took the time to answer all of our questions on the local attractions. When we first booked the reservations we were a little hesitant on if we would be welcome. Our fears were quickly laid to rest when we found and read the prominently displayed terms of business clearly stating the owners non-discriminatory policy regardless of orientation. The bed was soft and comfortable and provided this picky American one of the best nights of sleep I have had comparable to more expensive chain hotels.

Only two downsides to the hotels services. The first was that the spa was closed even though it was listed on the website and was at the bottom of our when we checked in. The staff did not tell us the spa was closed. The second problem was the continental breakfast did not have a great selection. Mostly it consisted of do it yourself toast and tasteless cereal. Croissants would have been nice and add a vegetarian choice to hot option.

Overall we had an wonderful experience and are planning on returning. Thanks for making my birthday special.

Room Tip: Ask for the River Dee room. Best view of the river and a very spacious private room.

Thank you for your review on White Waters Country Hotel.

I am extremely pleased that you enjoyed your Birthday celebrations here at the hotel.

Having a balcony room is lovely to take in the tranquil scenes and for just taking time out to relax. It is lovely to read that your room was comfortable and a good nights sleep was had.

Regarding the spa I can only apologise for you not being informed of its closure.

Your comments regarding Continental breakfast have also been addressed. Croissants are always available please do just ask the breakfast staff and they will order them from the kitchen for you.

Thank you for your feedback which is very much appreciated as it helps us solve any problems that may arise.

We all look forward to you returning to the hotel.

Kind regards

I've seen mixed reviews for this hotel, ignore the bad ones.
I travel a lot on business, so I have some experience. This was a personal 'break' for my wife and myself, so I was hesitant.
OK, it's not 5 star, it doesn't profess to be. This hotel is perfectly OK.
The staff and owners are very friendly and helpful, meals are nicely presented and value for money. Good selection of drinks at realistic prices, including a couple of 'real ales'.
It is NOT polystyrene ceiling tiles, as some have reported, they are professional suspended ceilings with fire retardant ceiling tiles fitted. The room was perfectly OK, there is the odd bit of decorating, around the hotel, that could do with a 'touch up' but, for gods sake, visitors cause abuse and this is a family concern that, for 6 years, have been trying to take a defunct hotel and make a professional business of it, with personal finances and any 'profit' they make.
All credit to them, they are succeeding and deserve encouragement and patronage.
The big questions - would I stop there again? - YES
Would I take business visitors there? - without hesitation.
If you are looking for 5 star plus facilities, forget it, go to Monaco.
If you are looking for a pleasant hotel, really comfortable, good food, friendly staff (and the parrot in reception is a laugh a minute) - don't hesitate, book in.

Room Tip: Good value for money. Pleasant stay.

Thank you for writing such a positve and lovely review on White Waters Country Hotel.

I am delighted that you enjoyed your stay and found everything from staff, food and drinks to be of good standard.

It is a very difficult job to constantly maintain every part of the hotel but there is a programme of work currently in operation.

It is really appreciated that you understand issues that arise. Thank you.

It will be a pleasure to welcome you back to the hotel in the future.

Kind regards

I decided to treat my husband to a night at the White Waters for our wedding anniversary. We were keen to visit the restaurant and thought it would be nice not to have to drive home afterwards. I got a good price for a standard double room on Dinner, Bed and (full) Breakfast at Laterooms - having checked first with the hotel who would have charged about £30 more. I checked the website before booking and was looking forward to a relaxing swim in to Spa Pool while my husband took advantage of the river fishing.
Check in was very efficient and our room was, well - 'standard' - with partial views of the river. The room would benefit from some simple maintenance, deeper cleaning and better furniture layout. For example, there was a good dressing table with mirror but the wall light was over a bare space, two feet away. The bed was firm and comfortable but with a small burn or moth hole in the top sheet. There were spare pillows but none were very supportive. The bathroom was OK but again would benefit from deeper cleaning. Towels were large, white and fluffy and there were lashings of hot water for a bath and shower. The hospitality tray was welcome and the TV was OK but didn't seem able to get BBC 1. The room was satisfactory but would generally benefit from 'sprucing up' and attention to detail.
Around the hotel was rather mixed - a tidy restaurant and outside decking with spectacular views over the river, for use in good weather - but corridors left untidy with a cleaning trolley, vacuum cleaner, disco light ball. etc.. Carpet in the area near the restaurant needs replacing to bring it up to the standard of the rest of the restaurant. WiFi worked in the bar - if a little slowly.
The food was undistinguished both at breakfast and dinner, with bar menu specials appealing much more than the 'Table d' hote'. Service was polite and relaxed.
However, our big disappointment was that the Spa Pool was not open. The Receptionist said the Spa Pool had been removed from the website as it is unlikely to re-open, due to high running costs. I checked the site and the Spa is still featured.
I appreciate this is a 'family run' hotel but think it might benefit from some of the quality control practices of a bigger organisation. The good deal made it fair enough but it was not worth more. What should have been a special day for us, was disappointing.
The White Waters could be really lovely but is missing the mark at the moment.

Room Tip: Try asking for a full view of the river.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review on White waters Country Hotel.

I am very sorry to read that you were disappointed with certain aspects of your stay.

Particularly the spa being closed. It was a very difficult decision to make for the directors of the hotel to close the spa, as it requires extensive repair work to bring it up to the high standards they want for their guests.

Also as I am writing this response the bedrooms are all being redecorated and were appropiate furnishings replaced and updated.
Thank you for your positive and negative feedback as it is very important that we hear the voices of our guests and then matters that require attention can be rectified quickly.

I do hope you will return to White Waters in the future to see for yourselves the improvements made.

Kind regards

I don't normally write a review but on this occassion i felt i had to. I found the whole experience very poor. The standard of rooms was very poor, loose tiles in the bathroom, my son and his new wife were supposed to have the bridal suite instead they had a room with the wallpaper hanging off. They should of had the red carpet but this never came out nor was there anyone there from the hotel to geet them on arrival. Drinks varied in price from the word go and were very overpriced. The food although tasty, was sparce on the night and we had to ask for more. We had a wedding planner at first John who was brilliant but sadly he left and had to deal with other people instead from then on everything went down hill. The experience was very disappointing. The spa was out of order.

We had read the reviews on Trip Advisor before booking and were looking for a night's stop over somewhere in a clean and good standard hotel on route to our final destination on North coast. We only booked a standard room but given this hotel's rating as no 1 in the area we thought it would meet our basic requirements. Having arrived we immediately wished we could swap hotels and decided to eat elsewhere based on the pub style decor. Our disappointment must have been obvious as the very helpful receptionist at least swapped and upgraded our room and helped us move our bags. She is the saving grace for the hotel.
Our original room in the newer part of the hotel had a dank smell, the partial 'glimpse' of the river was apparently a benefit as we were told other standard rooms looked out over the scrub land of the overflow car park. Instead we had view of large expanse of roof onto which former guests had deposited food and debris - if guests can see the rotting food why doesn't anyone clear it up? The bed had hardly any covers and the window sills had holes in and the frames were mouldy.
So the change to the VIP Cedar room was truly appreciated - as an excellent size. It had a river view and balcony that could have been enchanting but had peeling paint, was covered in leaves and with old broom left there. Good / king sized bed. The furniture was pleasant enough but about 6 hangers in large wardrobe for a room that could sleep family of 3 . Tea making equipment welcome. The curtains on a cheap plastic rail and when you pulled them they simply slipped off the end of the rail as no stoppers! Window frame also unfinished here. The bathroom good size but some mould around bath.
There are lots of stairs and the lift only goes to the first floor.
It was ok for a night's stay but doesn't live up to its billing - esp if one had booked the VIP room! Overall the hotel seems tired from use and lack of energy to maintain and repair. Downstairs has the feel of a 1970s red plush pub. The inclusive continental breakfast was meagre fare for example choice of a few 'cheap' tasteless / limp cereals and croissant OR toast. OK only continental but this really was provided at minimal cost.
The decking area overlooking the river has beautiful views but seems set out for a mass of drinkers and the peeling handrails and decking need someone to get to work to smarten the place up. A neighbouring hotel we had dinner at served tasty fresh food in more recently redecorated environment with equally friendly service.
We would love to write more positive comments as the lady on reception was simply wonderful. If this review prompts someone on the management to be as diligent and energetic as she and deal with the appearance of the premises then perhaps our experience was worth it.

Room Tip: Lots of stairs up to VIP rooms and lift only goes to 1st floor

Thank you for taking the time to write a review.

I am very pleased that you were given a free upgrade to a VIP room, if we suspect our guests are unhappy with anything we always try to rectify the problem as early as possible.

The standard room that you were originally allocated are in the modern part of the building are are very warm hence only lightweight bedding in these rooms, any requests for extras are dealt with immediately.

As we speak there have been many improvements made particularly to the decking area mentioned which has all been re-painted. This work could not be carried until recently as the awful weather refrained us from starting earlier.

Work on the rest of the hotel is also in progress such as redecoration of the rooms as and when possible.

I am delighted that you were well looked after by our staff and I do hope that you will return to see for yourself the improvements.

Kind regards

Thank you for writing a review.

I am very pleased to hear that you enjoyed your stay even though it was only a short break.

It's excellent to read that you enjoyed dinner & breakfast in the restaurant and plan a return visit.

The balcony certainly does take advantage of the beautiful views as you say. (as long as the snow just stays dusted on the hills and not two feet on the ground is fine by me!)

I look forward to welcoming you back to the hotel in the future.
