“Lovely setting but hotel could be improved”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 4, 2014

Stayed for 4 nights in March on a very good deal. Hotel is in a lovely setting at the foot of Horseshoe Pass just outside Llangollen although my room had a view over the yard at the back so not very scenic. The room was fairly clean apart from the odd small cobweb and the empty polystyrene chip box in one of the drawers! Furniture and décor in my room was very dated and not in very good condition (one broken drawer in chest of drawers and bed broken at foot). The restaurant was pleasant enough, breakfast was a bit haphazard, sometimes there was fruit salad, yoghurt and juice available and sometimes not but the cooked breakfast was good. Didn't have an evening meal here so can't comment on that. Overall, best bit is the setting but the hotel is tired and could be better run.

We booked a double room for one night over the May bank holiday weekend. Chuffed to get the last room as not a lot available elsewhere at a reasonable rate. Arrived mid evening & first impressions were 'amazing scenery'. This is the one good point of the hotel together with the cleanliness of the bed linen. Check in was at the bar hosted by a grumpy woman who clearly didn't know what customer service was. We were allocated room 6. This turned out to be a twin room with a en suite 70's bathroom and a non flushing toilet! Great. Breakfast the next morning was hosted by a pleasant Romanian lady who greeted us on arrival and took our hot food order. An hour later it hadn't arrived. Lost in transit between the kitchen & dining room. We were on business & this severely delayed us. No one in authority appeared to be on site to talk to. I e mailed the hotel to express concerns once home but they didn't even bother to reply. This says it all - spend your money elsewhere or you'll regret it like us.

Room Tip: Avoid at all cost

Stayed one night.
Room was clean but very outdated, think nan's carpet and green bathroom suite! Rock hard mattresses. Also sheep kept outside bedroom window in a little smelly courtyard, noisy and unpleasant.

Didn't have breakfast as I left before they began serving it at 8.30 which is far too late for anyone on a business stay

The hotel looked great as we drove towards it as it is surrounded by wonderful scenery. However, there was no one in the reception area to greet us and we had to go in search of someone in the bar area. We were directed to our room, on the first floor as were all rooms. There was no lift so unsuitable for disabled guests. Although our room was clean and the bed was comfortable, the decor was tired and old fashioned . The en suite had a bath with a hand held shower, but nothing to fix the shower to the wall and no shower curtain anyway. The towels were scratchy and worn.
We went down to the restaurant which apart from one other couple was deserted. However the food was very good, home cooked.! No one bothered to enquire if all was ok or if we required a desert. We left our table and retired to our room, no staff were to be seen.
Breakfast was also good, so no complaints re the food. Overall, if it's just a place to lay your head and a good meal you require, then it's fine. However, I feel that at £80 a night for the service or rather lack of was too much. We feel that given the location and tourism opportunities, that with drive and enthusiasm the hotel could be made into something a lot more welcoming and special.

Room Tip: Room 3 has a wonderful view.

Booked this for our first night touring, as looked nice and the availability of a four poster bed did appeal. We arrived about an hour early, and the hotel was locked up. Nearby builders did check for us, but the owner had gone out. Popped down the road for some food at a local inn, and found out that folk often cannot access the hotel. If we hadn't had already booked, we would've stayed at the inn, but back we went, and finally gained entry. We were shown two rooms, which were the best ones, and the one we picked, did indeed have a four poster bed. It was a nice enough room, but very tired, and not completely clean. The en suite was ok. But it was very disappointing. We paid £80 for one night with breakfast, and it certainly wasn't worth that amount of money. We ate our evening meal in the bar, and the food was great. No complaints there at all. In the morning, we did not have breakfast, and left once packed and ready. It wasn't the friendliest of places to stay, and sadly we wouldn't go back there again. There is great parking though outside. Lovely spot though and very pretty around that area.

Stayed at the hotel for one night .. Nice location , room basic but clean , view not very good , little disappointed as no Tea or coffee in the room .
Ate in the dining room in the evening and quite enjoyed the meal however Breakfast was a bit disorganized and service was slow , my partner had eaten his breakfast before i was served mine , we had to ask for tea . Sadly on the whole it lacked a personal touch.
