“Hotel/Castle Rooms”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 7, 2012

I was at the hotel recently with my family and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The hotel itself has nice rooms, great food, nice atmosphere which is helped by having very friendly and helpful staff.

One niggle and it stems from a previous visit when the Castle Cottage was first opened. I was there with my wife and son. When it was first opened the decor left a lot to be desired and a request for cutlery in the kitchen/pantry to prepare some lunch for our baby boy was met with a begruding response from the person who handled our request.

The whole point I would have thought of having a cottage would be to provide some space, particularly if traveling with a youngster. So that and the then decor was not welcome. When I complained on checkout I received a snooty response along the lines that the owner's wife had personaly decorated the Cottage. I can only assume she is not a profesional designer.

That said the website seems to indicate the decor has improved and I would love to visit the cottage again. All in all a great place to stay, I stay reasonably regularly as I fish on the Usk near Abergavenny and Crichowell throughout the fishing season.

A nice place to stay.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your post following your recent and not so recent stays at the hotel.

The hotel has 2 cottages, The Lodge in the castle grounds and Castle Cottage which is directly across from the main hotel.

I think you must be referring to The Lodge which was refurbished many years ago from your last stay.

The cottages are not self catering but we are happy to provide cutlery as requested. The cottages are more of an extension of the hotel with full use of the hotel’s facilities.

I am pleased you enjoyed your recent stay within the hotel and we hope to have the pleasure of welcoming you back in the near future.

Kind regards,

Charlotte Griffiths

Redecorated and revamped restaurant, live piano playing. Newchef from looks of it too. Jug of water and bread served up quickly, good advice on the wine list too.
Starter of salald with blue cheese, walnuts and spiced pear was exceptionally good, the mains of belly pork brought a huge portion of moist tasty pork and crispy crispy skin, had to eat it all as it was wonderful. Cannot remember pudding, still daydreaming about that pork...
A real treat in the centre of Abergavenny.

We had 3 great nights staying here. Breakfasts were superb and we had the High Tea one day which was also fabulous. We ate at Shaun Hill's Walnut Tree Restaurant the other 2 nights which was fantastic. It's a good location for walking in the Brecon Beacons. As another reviewer mentions it isn't cheap but it was good quality

In mid October I had to go to wales and spent 2 nights at the Angel in Abergavenny.
On the plus side, the hotel was clean, the bedroom and washroom were immaculate and all normal facilities, including the internet were available in the room.
The breakfast was good and plentiful, in fact I asked for less than that offerred as standard on the menu. I had dinner during one of the evenigs and although adequately cooked and presented, the flavour of the meat was missig a little. The staff were most helpful and the overall standard of service was good.
The car park is free, but you need to know to go down the side road next to the hotel to find it at the rear.

I booked a deluxe king room at the Angel for my partner's birthday, expecting it to be worth paying the (not inconsiderable) upgrade for a properly comfortable stay. Overall we enjoyed our trip- the room was large and nicely decorated; the communal areas of the hotel are very pleasant and the staff were polite and helpful- but there were a few things that niggled:

- as the previous commenter said, the heating needs to be fixed. Our radiators were not working properly when we arrived and, given it was late October, the room was cold.

- we took out the Twizy for a spin, which was fun, but why is there not a map of the area in-car? The hotel advises users to buy one, but surely to enjoy the ride a map is something of an essential for people who are visiting the area?

- the restaurant shuts at 10pm on a Saturday night. This was a disappointment to us as, having gone out to see a film, we found there was nothing to eat in the hotel. Surely there must be quite a few guests who would appreciate being able to have dinner there a bit later on Friday/Saturday nights? There's no room service either.

All in all, we enjoyed our stay but to be honest, for the price we were paying we would have expected rather more. If this room had been charged at £120 I would be singing the hotel's praises but at the rate we were paying it's frankly not great value for money.

The negative bits first. We were in a deluxe room (No 9) it is late October and chilly in the room (5.30pm) but the radiators weren't on. We called reception and were told "we switch the heating on about 7pm" - so the best they could do was bring up a portable oil filled radiator heater. Deeply unimpressive seeing as many people are getting ready to go out on a saturday night which meant a cold room and also a cold bathroom. The advertised 'towel warmers' in the bathroom description are presumably there for their ornamental value only as they never came on at all during our stay which meant the wet towels we left on them on saturday night remained wet for sunday morning.

If you like a bath make sure you specify this when you book. We assumed being a deluxe room it would have one but it didnt and there was only a shower which was a big disappointment as we were looking forward to an unhurried soak before going out. We asked to change rooms but were told they had none with baths free.

There are no towelling robes to keep you warm and dry after your shower either.

So we showered and dressed in discomfort and the heating (but not the towel rail) only just started to come on at 7.15 just as we were leaving to go to the Walnut Tree (highly recommended) - just amazing for a hotel with these aspirations.

The positive aspects are that the room was large and well decorated in typical Farrow and Ball 'boutique' style. The staff were friendly though reception was over-stretched both when we checked in and also as we were waiting for our taxi to the Walnut Tree.

If using the complimentary taxi to the Walnut tree make sure you are pro-active both about it getting you there and also once there for the return trip - it does not happen by itself even when you have told them you will want this.

The bed was large and very comfortable.

Its probably as good as you will get in the immediate area and clearly a lot of money has been spent bringing it up to scratch but all the Farrow and Ball paint in the world doesnt compensate for a penny pinching attitude to the heating bill.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for taking the time to share your valuable feedback about The Angel Hotel.

I am very pleased that you enjoyed the size and decor of your guestroom; however I am sorry to read that the heating and towel rail in your bedroom were not to your liking. The heating in the hotel is on a compensated system which measures the temperature outside and heats accordingly. There is a manual switch close to the towel rail which turns the towel rail on and off.

Please be assured that we will take your comments into account as we constantly strive to improve our guests’ experience. We do hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back to The Angel in the not so distant future.

Kind regards,

Charlotte Griffiths
