“Mother's Day treat”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 15, 2013

We booked a return visit to 1861 after quite a long break since our last visit. As ever the food was excellent - we chose the 'taster menu' which gave us 7 delicious courses at the March special price of under £40, and were treated to a range of dishes, favourites being the hake fillet, the trio of wild boar main course, and the 3 rhubarb puddings; not to mention the selection of five local cheeses on the cheese board which arrived 'French style' before pudding!

Best restaraunt by far in the Monmouth/Abergavenny area - do go!

“Deserted”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 8, 2013

We arrived as a party of four on Saturday night at the beginning of March for an 8.00pm reservation. We were the only booking and customers the entire evening.

This was disappointing as obviously the atmosphere was effected somewhat. We were with friends so had a great night.

I had heard good reports from others who had eaten here, but mainly for Sunday lunch.

This restaurant is someway outside Abergavenny, literally situated in the middle of nowhere.

The food.......... good to the standard you would expect. There is allot of competition in the area and I would question that as you have to drive past the Walnut Tree to get to 1861 why you wouldn't eat there instead. Certainly it is at a different level to 1861 yet with a comparable price per head. £60 per head (including a generous amount of wine)

Possibly if the restaurant had been busy it would be different

“What a little gem!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 4, 2013

We have passed this Restaurant a few times when we are in the area and always said that we should try it, well we were staying in a Hotel not far and decided to lunch here for my Husbands Birthday.
We were so pleased that we did, from the moment you walk through the door you get a feeling of being made very, very welcome.

We sat in the lounge and had a drink and Kate asked us if it was a special occasion so we informed her about the Birthday boy.

The menu was varied and if we had dined in the evening we would have had the 7 course taster but being as it was lunch time we thought it may be a bit much – we do like our food but we had an evening meal booked as well!

Kate took our order with a warm smile and a chat, we were then shown to our table, the Restaurant is quite small but we did not feel cramped in any way, there is plenty of room between the tables.

I had Scallops to start and Hubby had the terrine, both were lovely, well cooked and the presentation was exceptional, I then had Cod to follow and Hubby had lemon sole, both were cooked to perfection and very tasty, the seasoning was spot on. Lastly Hubby had the trio of chocolate and when it arrived they had put a little lit candle on his plate which I though was a real nice touch – the chocolate souffle was to die for, I could have just had that!

The price is very good for such top notch food and in my opinion I think they are well on their way to a Michelin Star!

If you are in the area go, we will be back very soon!!

We will be the first to book one of your rooms when they are built!!

“Nice food!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 2, 2013

Food nice and tasty. Food portions considerably small. I appreciate portions are much smaller in the finer restaurants but as the prices are expensive you would just expect a little bit more.

“just loveeating out”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 25, 2013

This was the perfect place to end our 3 day getaway. When we arrived we were greeted by the waiter in the lounge when we gave our order. We had a complimentary olives and nuts while we waited to be seated. Another complimentary dish, a slice of pork with rhubard chutney to whet our appetite. We both ordered lamb from the menu and it was presented to our table by Simon, the Chef. It was delicious and well presented.
I ordered Iced date parfait with toffee ice cream for desert and my husband ordered lemon cheesecake. Once more while we waited we tasted toffee apple soup presented in a small coffee cup. Once again, delicious.
We retired to the lounge for our coffee and petit fours. My husband is very fussy about his coffee but this was perfect.
The restaurant is stylish and smart with special colour effects in plants especially the purple crocus amidst the jams and chutneys on sale.
The service was excellent especially as the restaurant was quite full before we went to the lounge but the only waiter was charming and so efficent. It was also a bonus to have bought a Groupon voucher in advance. We will certainly recommend this restaurant and would love to return.
