We stayed at The Celtic Royal hotel in Caernarfon for a DanceMavericks’ dancing holiday running Monday-Friday, in February. The hotel scored well on most counts.
The service was very attentive and responsive, without being “in your face”. When we first arrived, we wanted to iron some clothes ready for the dancing. There wasn’t an iron in the room, so we popped down to reception and asked for one. We had only just returned to our room and closed the door behind us, when there was a knock at the door and the iron and board were delivered. Talk about fast!
For the dance break, we ate at tables around the ballroom. The waiting staff were very good, both with adults and the two young children of one of the couples. They were friendly, smiling and attentive. One or two of the staff had not quite perfected their English, but whenever they struggled they immediately got another member of staff to help out. Whether it was water, toast, or anything else – everything arrived just as, or just before, it was wanted. For breakfast, there were both hot and cold options. I stuck with the hot, which was far better than any other hotel I have stayed in over recent years. For dinner, there were multiple options for each course. A bit more variety would have been good, including a vegan option, but the kitchen also managed to rustle up things that were not on the menu when requested. As somebody with a food allergy, I wasn’t as confident as I would have liked to have been that my allergy was taken into account, but I survived the week, so they did get it right, even if the staff didn’t sound as certain as I would have liked.
For dancing – the ballroom floor was good, although it was clearly cleaned overnight using a product not really designed for dance floors, so if you are planning on dancing, take a brush for the bottom of your shoes. It’s not a huge floor, but it’s not tiny either - we had about 40 people doing ballroom without getting in each other’s way.
The leisure facilities are pretty good – I made use of the swimming pool, the gym and the steam room, but there is also a sauna which I didn’t use. None of the bits I used was huge, but all were adequate. I tend to think steam rooms are a good indicator of quality – this one was the right temperature, it had a good amount of steam, it didn’t smell manky (lots of them do), it had reasonable lighting, and the locals who use it made it friendly. The two negatives – the Jacuzzi attached to the pool was not warm enough, and the changing area is too small (although that’s true of many gyms, so nothing too serious).
The room was pretty good too. We had a triple, with one double and a single. Both were very comfortable, with good mattresses and duvets. The pillows could have been better though, but as we drove there we took our own (been caught out by bad pillows too many times!). I bought the ones used by the Four Seasons hotel in Chicago as they are really comfortable. If I’m driving anywhere, I take those with me! The room felt and looked spotless – very well cleaned. Wardrobe space would be fine for most people, although not high enough for a full-length dance frock.
The bathroom was probably the less successful bit. Although very clean, the shower controls were far too stiff, one evening the water was cold, and there is a lack of space to put things down or hang things anywhere in the bathroom. Other than toothbrush and toothpaste, all other toiletries ended up in the bedroom. And any idea of hanging gym/swimming gear up to dry was very wishful thinking. Again, not a major problem, but a surprise, given how good everything else was.
There’s parking around the front, side and back of the hotel, but on a serious slope. Anybody with even the slightest mobility problems will want to grab one of the spaces at the front (I don’t know if they can be reserved for people who need them – hopefully they can). There is a lift inside for anybody needing it.
All in all, a very enjoyable stay in a comfortable, spotlessly clean, hotel with very good service. A few areas where things could be slightly improved, but none serious enough to put me off going back. Actually, I’d happily go back tomorrow. We had perfect weather too, but I don’t think the hotel controlled that :-)
