“Charming Hostel, Perfect Location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 weeks ago

A great hostel in a spectacular location for Snowdon. The entire place was spotlessly clean and comfortable and staff were very welcoming and attentive. We stayed in a private, double room with bunk beds and an en-suite shower room. The facilities were exactly what we needed and the food was good and great value for money. I would 100% recommend this hostel!

Friendly, comfortable, warm hostel. Good food. Fantastic location at the top of Pen-y-Pas. The hostel was busy out of season I suspect you would need to book well in advance if you were travelling in season. I know that this is predominantly a walker/climber hostel but I was disappointed that there was no cycle storage facilities.

We stayed during the winter months when YHA were running a special offer on private rooms so we had a room with two bunks and an en suite. The hostel has been recently refurbished and looks great. However, it is an old building so there are some old draughty windows and a few doors that don't quite fit the door way!
The self catering kitchen is good with several hobs, sinks, microwaves and so on to allow multiple groups to prepare food at the same time. There's also a variety of relaxation space with games, a bar and a lounge area.
The cafeteria breakfast has plenty of choice of adequate quality (tinned peaches, fresh apples, cheese, cold meats, great bacon, real tomatoes, hash browns, cereal, etc etc). The evening meals were described to us as "like Weatherspoon's but better value for money". They were certainly better quality than some Weatherspoon's dishes but appeared to be "ping and ting" rather than home made. A main meal was not brilliant value (£7.50), but two courses was better (£9.95) and three really quite good (£11.95) especially as they were offering a free glass of wine.
A great location for climbing Snowdon and some back routes out to other mountains. The one drawback is there isn't quite enough parking for all guests so it's a good idea to expect to pay £10 per 24 hours for parking in the Snowdon car park and then consider yourself lucky if you manage to get a space in the YHA car park.

If you want to be right in the heart of Snowdonia - this is the place to be. With two paths up Snowdon right across the road, and all the others easily accessible by bus, this was a remarkable hostel. Being the off-season I had a huge dorm room mostly to myself for the 5 nights I was there. The staff was wonderfully helpful, from walking me through the weather updates deciding what the best time to climb Snowdon would be, to printing out a route to get me to my next destination. Met some interesting, kind and remarkable other guests as well.

Had a lovely stay in this yha and would love to go again. Went with two children aged 8 and 12 who were very keen to climb snowdon. The food in the restaurant was excellent. Did not use kitchen but thought it looked slightly small. The youth hostel was well decorated and rooms nice with very comfy beds!

I stayed with my partner and daughter. Perfect location to get on the mountain. Recent refurbishment meant that everything was sparkly and new. The lounge areas and dining area were fantastic.

The room was pretty small but expected for the low price. There were two issues we had which would stop us from staying again. Firstly the parking is not guaranteed and is a lottery as to whether you get a spot outside the place. Opposite is a pay and dispaly car park which can be free after 3pm ..ish as long as the fella has gone home for the day. Then you'll have to whizz across in your pyjamas the next morning at 7 when he turns up at to pay the £10 for the day.

The main issue we had, which will prevent us from staying again, was the fire drill that was carried out at 07:45. Having shinned it up the mountain the day before with a toddler on my back, the last thing I needed was to be woken by an alarm at such an hour and have to drag my aging carcass down the metal steps of a bunkbed and navigate the twisty route of a fire escape to the front door. Here a roll call was carried out. When the alarm stopped the roll call stopped and we all went back inside...which made the exercise pointless. But at least the state-of-the-art shutters worked! Now, I understand that fire drills need to be carried out but this is the first I'd ever been involved in one at a hotel/B&B/YHA over my 40 years of existance. Ordinarily the timing would be unwelcome but combined with legs full of lactic acid, creaky joints and being stationed on a top bunk, this was painful, hugely inconvenient and memorable for all the wrong reasons. I'll stay further out, pay a bit more and drive to the mountain next time :)

Dear Roy,

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review about the hostel, and I'm glad you enjoyed our new facilities and thoughtt our lounge and dining areas were fantastic.

Car parking is an issue here, particularly in the summer. The car park is owned by Snowdonia National Park, and we have no control over this. They will however generally give you until 9:00 in the morning now to pay for parking if the car is already there when they arrive at 07:00. It is correct that if arriving by car you do need to budget for up to £10 a day for parking. It is also worth noting that the Pen Y Pass car park regularly fills by 8 am in August, so you would need to rise even earlier if staying elsewhere and driving in & then still pay the £10.

We do not run fire drills in the morning before 10:00 when we have paying guests staying. There was an incident on 22nd August when our newly installed alarm system was triggered at 07:45 by a faulty detector outside the drying room in the lobby, and I would like to apologise to you for the disturbance. Evacuation procedures have to be followed and the alarm will continue to sound until we cancel this upon being sure that the building is safe. This is the last recorded instance of the alarrm sounding, other than in a test so please don't let this put you off staying with us again, as it could happen just as easily elsewhere.

Just returned from a great couple of nights here. We are a family of 6 who have stayed at several youth hostels in the past and this was by far the best in terms of cleanliness, room size, and position. The scenery is awesome and you really couldn't be nearer Snowdon. The staff were all very friendly and helpful, the food was delicious and the portion sizes were generous. Our teenage kids loved the games room while we were busy relaxing in one of the cosy lounge areas with a nice bottle of wine! The only suggestion I could make is perhaps to have a couple of comfy sofas instead of the chairs. We will definitely be back with friends, loads to do in this area - check out Bounce Below, zip wires and mountain biking!
