“thoroughly recommend this place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 7, 2011

Clean, comfortable, thoughtful and attentive service.
Fantastic views over the Menai Straits from breakfast table.
Rooms were spotless.
Good value and great position.
and best of all - have just received phone call to say I left a jacket behind in the room. I hadn't yet realised it was missing so am very grateful that they bothered to track me down.

Bangor University is a venerable institution with some very venerable buildings. Years ago when I was a student here this was called Coleg Normal and was a hall of residence in Victorian buildings in Upper Bangor. The quality of the old buildings has been respected and mixed with modern additions to form the Management Centre and this now includes very nice hotel accommodation.
I tried to stay here a few months ago but the booking was mixed up (the Management Centre refunded my payment with no fuss) but this time I got to stay there and it was really lovely - large and comfortable room, with a gorgeous view over the Menai Straits and all the facilities you might expect. Fabulous large comfy bed and perfectly good breakfast.
I would say there isn't anywhere better to stay in Bangor right now.

Just came back from spending a week at the Management Center. I was pleasantly surprised to find a very modern room inside a very old building. The room was small (by American standards) but it had everything we needed, including coffee, tea, and crackers. There were multiple electrical outlets at the desk and very good lighting in the room. The bathroom was spotless, the towels were thick and warm (from the heated towel rack). The location is very close to the Main University building. The typical English breakfast was adequate (hot and cold items) but the coffee was not very good. The staff at the desk was very friendly and helpful.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 12, 2011

The Management Centre is part of Bangor University school of management. The rooms are in a charming, reclaimed building overlooking the Menai Straights. My room was big, well appointed and with a lovely view. The furniture and fittings are a bit basic but it is a management school, not a hotel and this is reflected in the very reasonable price. Everything is wonderfully clean, my bed was comfortable and unlike so many hotels there were plenty of well situated electricity points for phones and laptops etc. The restaurant is a bistro. It has a very unfortunately situated school canteen type stainless steel serving station down one side - it looks just dreadful! Clearly, the designer of this place needs some help from the style police! The food at dinner was good, the wine list was reasonable and the waiter was charming but the ambience is let down by the design of the room and horror of horrors, radio 2 blaring out. I think the bistro aspires to a little more but it needs some effective management. Breakfast was a real disappointment. Horridly cheap orange juice from concentrate, cheap bread, factory made croissant and (this is where the canteen serving point comes in) a dreadful cooked offering that had been lurking for ages under heating lamps. The sausages were especially cheap and nasty. With some tiny changes this place could be really good. There are lots of local producers in North Wales who could be used. The place could pride itself in serving local organic products for example. And how difficult is it to make some decent bread for breakfast, when they offer it at dinner? I would recommend this place but ask or bed only and go out for breakfast!

It is central, with good parking (important in the town), good food and very clean and well appointed rooms. In a quiet self contained compound insulated from the main student population it is well above any other local offering. Free wi-fi available in rooms too. Breakfast (wide choice of hot and cold food) included in what is a very reasonable price. One big and unusual plus is that once to know the accommodation you can book specific rooms online. Friendly and helpful staff too which always helps although everything was got right first time so no need to sort any niggles out. Other positives - heated towel rail in bathroom, toiletries, kettle and basic drinks provided, iron/board, CD/radio/alarm and comfortable beds, (my double bed was not quite as big as some American chains provide), Only point to note is that the site is on a slope so might cause problems for some with less mobility but you can bring your car to the front entrance for ease of drop off and lifts available where needed.
