“Poor quality, rude staff - avoid !”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed November 12, 2013

I stayed here for only one night (I was booked in for the week) as it was a truly awful experience. The problem comes if you are given a room in the annexe part of the building, which - frankly - is of such a hugely inferior quality to the hotel it does it a massive disservice. The rooms in the main building look nice from the photos, but it is of course a lottery as to whether or not you get one of those

My problems here are two-fold: (i) My room was cramped, smelled of damp and was in a poor state of repair (the blinds fell down as soon as I tried to close them); and (ii) the reception staff were mildly disinterested at best, erring on rude at worst. My room also lacked any wi-fi access, which in 2013 is unacceptable (especially as was in town on business). The receptionist seemed entirely disinterested when I politely asked if I could have a room with wi-fi.

What is worse is that my colleague (also booked in for a week, also only stayed one night) found his room in a terrible state. Not only were there hairs in the shower and a half-eaten Fudge on the side table but - disgustingly - a used tissue beside the bed. When he notified the hotel receptionist of this she just got irritated and was quite rude to him. I'm assuming she gets harrassed and irritated alot working in the Marine but failed to graps the basic tenets of working in a service industry.

There are far, far better B&B's in Aber that are cleaner, have friendlier owners and make for a relaxing time away. Avoid this like the plague.

This hotel came highly recommended and I wasn't disappointed.

The Marine Hotel is a traditional seaside hotel with a good location. I was given a first floor sea view room which was clean and tidy. The only negative was the bathroom was a little on the small side.

The staff were friendly and the breakfast was excellent - there is both a wide range of hot and cold options.

If you're looking to stay in Aberstwyth, then I would definitely recommend staying here.

First the positives: really friendly staff throughout, nice bar with reasonable prices, good breakfast, seafront location and short walk into town.

But the negatives... We booked a family room for three people. It was on the third floor and had a living space of 3m x 3.2m and about a third of that was steeply sloping mansard - we have seen bigger single rooms. Small window overlooking the sea had to be wedged with a bag to stop it rattling, but it let in constant draft, which with the non working radiator could have meant a cold night - three people in such a small space kept it warm though. Tiny ensuite shower with difficult access. Car park very pokey and difficult to get into.

We paid £135 for one night b&b, very much at the top of what I would have expected. The hotel seemed fully booked, partly due to half term and partly due to the Scottish under 16 soccer team being resident.

This was all OK for one night, but any longer...

Friendly staff, clean and tidy room with everything in good working order, comfortable beds with lovely new linen and a view that is unbeatable.
The hotel is never going to compete with some of the modern built hotels on some levels, it has long corridors like a rabbit warren lots of levels and odd staircases betraying its legacy of different buildings having been joined together but it is what it is a good old fashioned British seaside hotel. It has been modernised and is bright with modern furnishings as much as a building like this can probably allow but it is welcoming and comfortable. The breakfast was lovely, plenty of it. I would return.

Room Tip: Sea facing room lovely but expect some noise from the prom as students find their way home ! Not noi...

My parents always stay here when they come to visit me at University. And I recently stayed here with my mam. The hotel is great, and the staff are very friendly, but it is not without it's flaws.
For the price of the hotel, some of the things could have been in better condition, there was quite a bit of dust in our room, and the duvet cover on my bed was damaged, also, the wifi does not reach all of the bedrooms (unfortunately it did not work in our room).
However, if you have a room with a sea view, you have a stunning view, the hotel is very warm and comforting. And the food that they serve is top notch!

Room Tip: Get a room with a sea view!

A brilliant value break in a well-run and pleasant hotel. The sea which hardly goes out is a stone's throw from the hotel so wonderful, relaxing views over Cardigan Bay. Good hearty breakfast and plenty of eating places nearby.

This hotel is located on Marine Terrace, right on the sea front. The prices and the website speak of an upmarket establishment, with pretentions of being luxurious. With one letter missing from the name of the hotel on the front façade, one starts to wonder if one's been duped. On entering the room, charged at £125 per night, the suspicion is confirmed the first thing to notice is that it's really not a big room for triple occupancy. It was rather cosy for two. With single glazed old sash windows looking out to sea, cosy probably wouldn't be the right adjective with the wind blowing onshore. Someone had stuffed rolled up paper between the frames, a possible clue that the windows rattle in the wind?
A small flat screen tv was fixed on the wall - head banging a distinct possibility. In order to get enough facilities in the room to justify the high room rate, there was a hotch potch of unsightly electrical wiring and extension sockets used. If the electrics were even legal, they were certainly not aesthetically acceptable. No thought had gone into the design of the facilities within the room and this added to the feeling of disappointment. Perhaps the bathroom would be better...
Oh dear, oh dear. The bathroom may have recently been redone, but clearly not by professional tradesmen, who knew their craft. Shocking grouting, very amateur attempt at mastic joints, slap dash decorating. The shower enclosure had nowhere to rest soap or bottles. How would a elderly person manage? The bathroom door appeared to have a lock but it didn't work. Cleanliness then, surely they won't have slipped up there? First noticed dark hair on cistern and in shower. Then noticed something glistening on the floor in the corner by the shower cubicle. A small piece of broken glass. Took a cotton wool pad and wiped over one small section of the floor with it, going right up to the edges. It came away dark grey with dust and hairs. Not impressed.

The hotel boasts a basement spa but the Jacuzzi wasn't even working properly, which rather sums up the whole experience of staying there: Didn't deliver on the expectation.

On the positive side, the beds were comfortable, the linen was clean and fresh and the breakfast was fine, not amazing but satisfactory.
Would I stay there again? No, would try to find somewhere else with higher standards.
