“Very special.....”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 21, 2013

We went for lunch to the Garden Room at Dormy House for the first time last Sunday and had a lovely time. The staff were helpful and friendly, the food was excellent. My huband had the roast beef and I had the pork and both were superb. There is a set price for Sunday lunch at £22 for 3 courses which we thougt was good value for the quality of the food and there is a good selection of wines by the glass. After lunch I wandered into the new courtyard to have a look around and met with the manager who kindly offered to show me some of the gorgeous rooms that had been vacated that morning....nothing seemed to be a trouble to people working there, they all seemed very focused on making their guests welcome.

Had a wonderful lunch here on Sunday with my family for my birthday. Great food, flowing wine and excellent service. The restaurant has a lovely feel to it - very welcoming.

“Bit of a Curate's Egg,but a nice Curate's Egg”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 10, 2013

Just got back from celebrating my wife's birthday a deux at the new Garden Room. Surprised to find it quite busy for a Tuesday Night only a month or so after opening. First the positives; you should always judge a restaurant by the standards it sets itself : this one says it's not interested in awards but just wants to serve "the best food for miles around". This it certainly does. As locals, it's a shame there's not more competition in the fine dining stakes, but we look forward to returning regularly to the Dormy House. The cooking and ingredients were high quality ; quite ambitious but successfully delivered. I couldn't detect any white chocolate in the "Cep risotto with pullet's egg and white chocolate" but suspect that's probably a good thing.
The fact that they have no a la carte nor any bargain basement table d'hote but just a single fixed price of £40 for 3 courses from a choice of about 7 in each course is a sensible and welcome innovation and, with very reasonable wines by the glass, makes it good value.
On the negative side, the service needs to relax a little. Everything was very fast with with the starter being cleared before my wife had finished chewing, the main course arriving less than 30 minutes after we walked through the door and the waiter trying to take the dessert order while my wife was in the loo. The room is quite stark and bland and could do with some pictures on the walls , more colour about the place or, dare I say it, some tablecloths. But I'm happy to put all this down to teething troubles and look forward to going back.
Just one word to the duty manager, though. If you're going to walk round the tables chatting to the guests, you really must make sure you go to all of them. You seemed such a nice bloke and we were left wondering what we had done wrong to be ignored!!

“Fabulous as always !”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 16, 2013

First visit back after refurb. Wow what a difference. More ultra modern decor, very slick, sharp and stunning at the same time.
The Garden room Menu and food outstanding as always, but for me the decor before was more welcoming and warm. ( Me being old fashioned!). Service 5 star plus, and my birthday cake surprise was soooooooo good. Thank You !

“A Little pretentious”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 15, 2013

Now look if you want to pay £200+ for 4 lunches, have beautifully prepared food but not enough of it then fine, I would prefer to have enough to eat. Service is always good and frankly the sea food platter to share is excellent, but just a little over expensive and over thought. I guess that suits the race goers of this world but there are others amongst us who might only use it for birthdays or celebrations and then still feel hungry which would be dissappointingg and has been on the last three occasions we have been. Atmosphere lovely old stone hotel with a lovely conservatory, for me you jst don;t quite get what you pay for but others may think differently.
