“defrock this hotel”

Sir Christopher Wren's House

OK, you can't expect every hotel you stay in to be topnotch. But when you chuff up north of £200 it should at least function. This one doesn't. From the door security cards to the air conditioning to reception, nothing worked as it should. They didn't ask us to book a table for dinner - result, an argument and no table for dinner. On the hottest night of the year, the a/c simply let out steam. Opening the windows merely let in the assorted noise of Windsor's finest ASBO candidates - result 2 hours sleep. No cable tv. Charmless staff. Didn't bother with breakfast. I do the triathlon every year, but can't find a decent hotel in the area. Anyone got any ideas? Doesn't have to be fancy, just good. And please don't say the Oakley.

“Terrible hotel”

The Sir Christopher Wren Hotel is supposed to be a four star hotel and on its website looks wonderful. When we arrived we were told that there was a problem with the computer and the reception staff were unable to tell us which room we were in. When we were finally taken to our room it was not in the actual hotel but we were taken to another building across an alleyway. We had booked an executive room which we understood would have a balcony and mini bar. The room had neither! The decor was shabby (not chic!) the towels were old and smelly. We were moved to another room but this was no better. We had only booked for one night (thank goodness). Breakfast looked good until we were served undercooked sausages. The staff were unfriendly and unhelpful.
My message is DON'T GO THERE.

“Not worth the money”

Sir Christopher Wren's House

A group of us stayed overnight and paid £164 bed and breakfast. My room, whilst in itself might be considered OK, was not worth this amount. Various requests written in advance of arriving were missed. The staff, whilst pleasant seemed inexperienced and untrained. We never saw any evidence of a manager or supervision in reception - even after complaining! I have written a letter of complaint to the hotel but, three weeks later, have yet to hear from them. My advice would be to go somewhere else that is more appreciative of its customers.

“Totally apalling staff attitudes!”

We were very disappointed with this hotel. It looked great on Lastminute and we got a very good room rate, discounted for a Sunday evening.

We were apalled at the lack of customer service we received upon checking in. We waited an extra 40 mins after the 3pm standard check in as our room wasn't ready. We used the hotel car park but were not advised to hand in our car keys point of check in. It wasn't until later on in the evening when we asked about getting our car out of the space it was blocked in that they asked us for our car keys, this being completely inconvenient as the hotel has no lifts and its a heck of a lot of stairs to get back up to our room!

All this would have been fine, had we received an apology from the duty manager for these inconveniences. What we actually received was sarcasm and quite frankly agression when we'd voiced our complaint.

Its a real shame as our room was nice, not quite what the picture showed on the web but still not bad for the £65 we paid. Plus they have a lovely spa area. The location of the hotel is excellent, right opposite the castle and central to all bars and restaurants.

However a total lack of customer service and an apalling Duty Manager totally ruined our stay. Take this into consideration when booking, I wish I'd known this beforehand as it was a birthday treat!

“Variable quality, disinterested service”

Sir Christopher Wren's House

May 16, 2005

We stayed here with a group of friends, 4 couples in all. Reception staff were polite, but completely uninterested - we had 3 different explanations about the parking arrangements and room locations. Check in was slow and confusing, 2 receptionists trying to deal with everyone at the same time. I think they thought this was helpful, but in the end it was chaos. It appeared that they couldn't have cared less about the quality of the service they delivered.

Once we had got our 4 room keys, whilst we had all paid the same rate, every room was completely different and only one had a resemblance to the photos on the website. Our room was tiny, on the side of the main building and with a view of a brick wall! My husband and I had to avoid walking around the bed unless one of us was actually sitting on it - otherwise we bumped into each other or knocked over some item of furniture. The bathroom, whilst very clean and well maintained, reminded me of a caravan - there was barely enough room to turn around. We asked for a change in rooms but were told the hotel was full.

Another difficulty, the hotel has a pub at the side of it. We went to bed at about 1.30 am and spent almost all night awake listening to the disposal of their empty bottles and then at about 5am, listening to them being collected! We didn't bother with breakfast and left the hotel at about 7am as the room was certainly not conducive to sitting in. Far better to enjoy a pleasant stroll around Windsor and Eton.

The only positives about the stay were the great weekend we had with our friends, (nothing to do with the hotel), the fact that we were staying for one night only and that we had got a cheap rate by booking with a cut price website. I, like other reviewers, would have left rather than spend more than 1 night in that room! I think that the hotel rests on its laurels and makes no effort to instill a feeling of quality service and attentiveness. We left some constructive feedback - no one bothered to respond.
