“Great hotel, lovely staff”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 7, 2012 via mobile

Fantastic hotel in great location - central to town, castle, station. Excellent facilities and extremely helpful staff. We arrived at 9am for a 1 night stay expecting to drop our bags and check in later. Reception staff immediately looked for and found a room that was already available and put us in there straight away.

Very enjoyable stay - I would happily recommend

This was our first visit to Windsor and we found Trip Advisor reviews invaluable when choosing where to stay. We chose the Macdonald Hotel as the reviews were so good and booked three nights with Expedia in a standard double room at the end of September. I was a little unsure what to expect as from the photos the room and bed looked very small but we hadn't much choice for the dates we wanted. We had heard about the parking issues in Windsor and decided to book the valet parking. I am so glad we did as the guys were really helpful and pleasant and we knew our car was safe whilst we spent time in the town.
The room was on the second floor, was spacious and had a good sized en-suite with walk-in shower. Although the furnishings and decor were dark there were plenty of lights, it was very clean and the bed was really comfortable. The view was of flat roofs and other buildings, obviously at the back but it didn't bother us.
There was a mini-bar, complimentary bottle of water and tea/coffee making facilities. I opened and examined the contents of the mini-bar before reading the instructions and then frightened myself as the instructions said that anything moved in the bar would trigger an automatic signal down to reception and this would be charged to our room. With prices like that I didn't want to have anything out of the bar but the lady on reception assured us it was OK when we went down to check, and we wouldn't be charged anything for moving things.
We stayed in the bar on the Friday night as a Jazz evening was advertised. This was a guy playing a sax to backing tracks. He was OK and it made a pleasant relaxing atmosphere. We had a sharing food board which cost around £9 and was very good value. We ordered a bottle of wine as the individual glasses were so expensive but ended up paying for a much more expensive one than we had ordered as the waiter brought us a sample of a new wine to taste and my husband didn't hear him say that it would be £6 dearer - we gave him the benefit of the doubt. The rest of the time we ate out as there are so many places to choose from and much cheaper than the Hotel.
We hadn't booked breakfast but the first morning hubby went down on his own as he enjoys a full English. He came back a little disappointed. He was asked when he went in if he was having a cooked breakfast. When it came on the plate there was one piece of bacon, one small egg, half a tomato, half a flat mushroom, a small fat sausage, and a piece of black pudding. He also had toast and cereal and extra toast. When we left we filled in the feedback form and mentioned our concern about the price of the breakfast and since returning home have had an email from the manager who has also offered us two complimentary breakfasts at this hotel.
We enjoyed our stay but I can't say we were made to feel special in any way as other people have mentioned, but the staff were all very polite and helpful. The toiletries were not replaced each day and I had to search for some towels when we arrived as only one set were in the bathroom. I found some in the wardrobe.
Would I recommend this hotel? Yes - but watch the prices if you are on a budget.

I found this hotel to be a absolute delight. The staff where friendly and helpful at all times. The rooms where of top quality and my wife and I could not find a thing wrong at all with the rooms. The evening meal which we had in the hotel was of top quality also and so was the breakfast. It is in a superb location to places of interest and the night life. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone wishing to visit Windsor.

We spent one night here in September so we could visit Windsor. The decor is modern and new. Our standard room was spacious, very clean, and comfortable, with an ample-size bathroom and pretty purple toiletries. The bottle of drinking water and glasses was a very simple but nice touch. The location is perfect, being just steps away from the castle and even closer to restaurants and shops. (The town of Windsor was delightful, with plenty of souvenir shops, but many department-store-type shops as well. And, at night it was pretty and peaceful, with all of the shops closing rather early...around 6:00p I believe.)
But what stands out for me the most about our stay was hands down the fantastic staff! From the courteous and prompt e-mails prior to our arrival (arranging airport shuttle service) to the efficient yet personable check-in and departure staff (he even came outside with our group to take one last photo of us all!), their staff is top-notch! You can tell that the staff take pride in their jobs and their hotel. Very impressed by this hotel's staff!

We stayed recently at the Macdonald Windsor Hotel. The hotel is a converted department store that was newly renovated in the last few years.
If you are going to Windsor Castle and also want to do some shopping the location couldn't be better.
They did a first rate job in renovating the rooms, though don't expect any views. You are likely to be looking across to another room or local building. Otherwise the rooms are very nice, and though not large they are reasonable in size and the use of space was well designed.
When we checked in the hotel was packed with a luncheon event, but we nevertheless experienced friendly and helpful service.
About the only negative to the hotel is the parking. If you park in the hotel parking lot (limited space) it is 25 bps per night and the alternative they offer is some distance away and is slightly less at 20 bps per night. Also, you need to plan ahead to figure out where to best unload/load your car. Don't try the front of the hotel. There isn't any real space, the street is busy and the sidewalks can be packed. Instead, use the back entrance. It is a little convoluted finding it, and also has limted space, but you won't be as rushed.

Dear Colovoyageur

Thank you for taking the time to complete a review of the Macdonald Windsor Hotel following your stay with us.

I am pleased that you enjoyed your stay and that you found the team helpful.

I was sorry to note that you were disappointed with the parking charge. Parking is limited in Windsor, and we offer a full valet service. We would never intentionally hide our costs, and offer parking as an additional option when guests book with us. By pre-booking a parking space, we can assure guests of a smoother and easier arrival experience with porterage.

I hope to welcome you back very soon.

Kindest regards

Stayed at Macdonald Windsor after winning a nights stay with breakfast in there Olympic Medal competition. We decided to add an extra night with dinner onto the stay this was a very reasonable special friday night rate. Our room was stunning and we received a lovely card from the staff which was a nice personal touch, and to my husbands delight a bottle of wine. I was more impressed with the scrummy caley cup cakes and our chocolate gold medals nice touches.
All the staff were very efficient but human as well, breakfast was usual Macdonald great standard and our meal was also excellent.
Having health problems I found the hotels location spot on a short walk from the station and on the High street facing the castle could not have been better.
We had memorable stay Thanks again

My Daughter and I stayed here for a week during the Olympics. We live in the USA. We traveled to London on the train each day, except when we went to an event at the Rowing Venue. The hotel had a very small street exposure. The room was very nice. We did not eat at the restaurant in the hotel because there were many other choices in Windsor. I am sure the restaurant was very nice, but it was also expensive. We were greated each morning by the staff, and each evening. Our room was always well kept.

Room Tip: You can get trains to London direct from the Riverside station, but if you go to the other station i...
