Just returned from a Spa Breaks deal that we purchased for Fredricks. which included 2 nights B&B Dinner on both nights and 60 mins spa treatments each.
The Spa is lovely, very small, but not overcrowded at all, as they make sure everybody has a seat. The spa treatments were vere good and the spa staff were wonderful. Luckily the weather this weekend was great, if it were raining I feel I wouldnt rate the spa so highly as most of the pool is outside and seating areas.
I do feel that the hotel itself is very dated and could do with a revamp. The room was clean, but small had tv, hairdryer, iron and air con and came with shampoos etc. The bathroom was very dated, chipped tiles and shower was rubbish. Surely a 4 star hotel should have a kettle in the room?????? Was a bit annoying if like me you like a cup of coffee as soon as you open your eyes, you had to go to breakfast to get a coffee. Bed is hard, but I like that and it was comfy. The breakfast was standard, full english and continental, was nice not amazing, and is also only served till 9.30 so dont expect any lazy lie ins.
Bedroom walls are very thin, 3oclock this morning our neighbours obviously had a bit too much too drink and we could hear coughing, being sick, flushing of toilet, shower being turned on etc. You dont get much privacy and I can imagine if the hotel was holding a wedding you wouldnt get much sleep with the noise.
The grounds are beautiful, small, but had alot of nice cosy outdoor seating areas. But again if it were raining you wouldnt be able to appreciate these, although there is alot of seating indoors, with TV/bar areas etc.
The evening dinners are amazing, absoloutley superb food cooked to perfection, faultless.
The hotel staff are very attentive, maybe to attentive for some, kind of lingering around looking for things to do, kind of gets a bit annoying, you almost want to tell them to back off. But I suppose thats what some people like?
Be warned they do take £100 off your card at the start of your stay, which I have never experienced before, this is for any 'extras' and we were advised that if you didnt use this they would credit you back within 5 days - This is a bit bad I think, especially if you want to settle your bill with cash bit strange I thought? Also be warned that extras are very expensive £3.50 for a bottle of water £30 for a £10 bottle of wine - although I suppose you kind of expect this with most hotels.
Overall I would say very relaxing weekend away, very intimate spa area, great spa staff, hotel OK nothing special, attentive staff (too attentive) amazing food (which was the highlight of our stay) and the chef at Fredricks is truely a credit to them, without him I dont think the hotel would be half as busy as what it is.
Would I return? Unfortunatley Not somethings just not there with this place, it doesnt feel special and the hotel bedrooms are in desperate need of modernising.
