“Characterful... in a good way”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 27, 2014

We really enjoyed our overnight stay at the Christopher Hotel - yes, the car park entrance is a little narrow, but it is part of the architecture of the hotel, and only took a little care to get through, which was worth it for free off-road parking.

We used our large family room as a base for general exploring around Eton and Windsor - it is only a short stroll over the river to get up to the Castle and central Windsor. Breakfast was good, without any of the problems that other reviewers mention.

Room was clean and nicely appointed. Free Wifi also worked fine. Only a couple of gripes - bathroom was in need of a spruce-up, and receptionist told us the wrong time for breakfast, so we arrived 30 mins early (it was a bank holiday). No great problem, but we would've liked extra time in bed!

2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 18, 2014

We checked into the Christopher with friends on 10th April with a Groupon deal. On arriving all seemed well and the Duty Manager was welcoming. We were shown to rooms in the main building and after settling in we set off into the town of Windsor. Easy to walk to so perfect location into the centre of the town, the river and the castle.

On returning to the hotel we had a couple of drinks in the bar and went to our rooms to change for dinner in the hotel restaurant. My husband & I found that we had limited electricity in the main bedroom area but the bathroom lights were working. My husband spoke to the duty manager, different from the one on duty earlier, and he came to the room. Despite endeavouring to resolve the situation, he was unable to do any other than offer us an alternative room and was prepared to arrange that for us. We declined as we thought we were only there for one night, we were going downstairs to eat and then to bed. We had 1 lamp which worked so we said that we would stay. He was helpful and our choice to stay. When my friend emailed the hotel regarding this and other issues, she was told it was only 1 light bulb broken but there was 2 lamps & a plug not working so that response is incorrect.

Dinner served in the restaurant was not as expected from previous reviews. My husband and friend had an acceptable meal, cheese burger & ham, egg & chips, both meals were ok. However, my friend & I ordered Lamb Tagine with apricots & almonds and this was served piping hot and in a terracotta tagine dish with a flatbread. The meat was tough, fatty & gristly and had never seen an apricot. We didn't complain because we felt we had already had a problem with the lights and couldn't complain about the food as well. The duty manager, Jon, had given us wine on the house to compensate for the lights.

The following morning, we went down to breakfast and there was a choice of cereals, fruit, yoghurt, juice etc and we were asked what we would like to drink & our choice of cooked breakfast. 2 breakfasts were served with bacon like cardboard, mine was sent back as the scrambled eggs were unacceptable, a mess of egg cooked in a pan but not beaten previously, I was told this was because the chef cooks them in butter but they didn't resemble scrambled egg as I know it!! My husbands breakfast was forgotten altogether and when he did get it he couldn't eat the eggs as they weren't cooked and very unpalatable. We aren't over fussy people but this really was the icing on the cake.

The girls in the restaurant were not trained properly so I can't blame them but the hotel has a responsibility to make sure the chef can cook a decent range of food. Clearly he had an off day?? It seems to me that there is a lack of competent staff who have been properly trained, they do their best but don't really know how. To add to this the cafetierre & teapots were dirty and not cleaned properly. Very shabby and when we spoke to the original duty manager he said it was because they had been busy, perhaps more trained staff are needed. I felt sorry for the 2 waitresses they looked overworked, they worked late the previous day.

We did have something deducted from the final bill but I think it should be pointed out that this wasn't a good experience for us and others should be made aware.

We will not be returning which is a shame because the location is perfect, please Christopher Hotel sort it out you are sitting on a goldmine such a fabulous location but a tired shabby hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for a room outside of the main building, they seemed better.

We are extremely sorry that theses guests did not enjoy their stay at The Christopher. All our staff are very customer focused and we aim to provide first class Customer Service at all times. It is very disappointing when we fail in this respect.
To address the individual points raised:
1. We understand from the Electrician who attended the following day that the lighting circuit in this bedroom had fused. Regretfully we were unable to rectify this on the day. Our Duty Manager offered to upgrade guests to a Superior Room but this was declined. We don't really undertstand why, as we are sure this would have enhanced their experience with us.
2. With regard to the Lamb Tagine, we regret that this did not come up to our normal standard. We would have welcomed the opportunity to rectify this on the day and would have happily provided an alternative dish.
3. We are sorry that these guests did not enjoy their eggs and are very surprised as these eggs were prepared by our Head Chef, who has worked for us for more than two years and we have always been happy with the quality of his food. We will be having a 'egg cooking' session this week to establish a standard for each type of egg.

We do hope to have the opportunity of welcoming these guests back to The Christopher in the near future to prove that we can get it right and offer an exceptional Guest Experience.

Approached through high stable gates, although would only cope with a narrow car ,the room was a lovely large twin bedded one , with dressing table and 2 bucket seats, bedside units, and TV.
The bath/shower room was a good size.
Plenty of free parking.
Reception and bar were pleasant with wooden floors...
Dining area lovely , with scrumptious breakfast...from continental (£12) to full English at £14...
Would return again:)

Room Tip: Twin rooms much larger than doubles

I agree with the other reviewers that the court yard rooms are good, however, the other rooms are not as good. We have stayed at this hotel on a number of occasions over the last 5 years and its going down hill, it's starting to look tired and there is a staff training need. We stayed at Christmas and the room was freezing, the radiator didn't work and we were given an additional electric heater but it wasn't satisfactory. At Christmas the service at breakfast was poor, but we put it down to staff difficulties at the time of year. We stayed again on 12 April and our experience wasn't good. The lady who checked us in, whilst pleasant looked scruffy and looked like she could have been cleaning, not a good impression. We paid extra for full breakfast and despite there being only 4 other people in at the time, the service was painfully slow and there seemed to be a lack of understanding e.g. my poached eggs on toast arrived without the toast. The buffet was poor, definitely less well stocked than before, there were only 2 yogurts, both blueberry and the dried fruit appeared to have been dried for a long time. The 2 waitresses were pleasant, but need training as they didn't appear to understand what was required. At breakfast there are no table cloths, which is fine if the tables are of a good standard, however, some of them resemble wallpaper pasting tables underneath, not a good look. We have stayed at most of the hotels in Windsor when visiting relatives who live Eton and the Christopher is certainly not the worst, but at least 2 are much better and often offer better deals e.g. The MacDonald. On the plus side the parking is a bonus.

Room Tip: Ask for a courtyard room

We remember this lady well from her stay at Christmas as she was suffering with flu like symptoms during her stay with us - Not only was the radiator at full volume but she was given two additonal heaters in the room, it was positively tropical when the Housekeeper went in to clean.
All our Receptionists wear formal business suits, we are sending Trip Advisor CCTV images of Mr X checking in (Mrs X did not come into Reception) showing the attire of the Receptionist.

Stayed here with a groupon voucher with my partner. This was our second visit and we were not disappointed. We had a lovely courtyard room which was very spacious, clean and comfortable. The molton brown toiletries were a lovely touch. The room had everything you wanted and we requested for a DVD player to be brought to our room which arrived promptly with no fuss. The staff were really friendly and our waitress at breakfast was extremely polite and attentive. Breakfast was a choice of full English or continental. We had the full English which was lovely. All in all a lovely nights stay and I would not hesitate to recommend to anyone.

We stayed overnight on a Groupon and had a very pleasant visit. The staff were extremely helpful and the room was very clean and spacious - we even had chocolate on our pillows and our beds turned down. It was quiet when we stayed so we ate in the bar and had an excellent meal. I shall use this hotel again if I am in the area.

Was booked in here for the week by a client I was working with in the area.
Limited free parking, but enough room for me, & a great welcome at reception.
Room was a good size with a lovely comfortable bed & a bed settee (I think).
Decent sized bathroom with a bath & fabulous shower.
Dinner was fantastic with a great choice of food & drinks; only down side was the 'discretionary' charge added to the final bill - pretty common nowadays but I still think it's rude...
Breakfast was very good also.
What really makes this place the no.1 hotel in Eton, ignoring the fact that it's the ONLY hotel in Eton, are the staff; they are professional, efficient & genuine.
I recommend the short walk across the river into Windsor - so beautiful.
