Description: One of the city's most historic pub, and listed on CAMRA's National Inventory as one of the most historic interiors in the UK, The Haunch is packed with history, reputedly haunted by the ghost of the cheating card player, whose mummified hand is displayed in the upper 'House of Lords' Bar, with the snug 'Horsebox' allegedly the meeting place of Churchill and Eisenhower whilst planning the D-Day landings! With a spacious first floor restaurant, and a recent ownership change, The Merchant's House dining room on the first floor (entrance through pub) features a contemporary British menu specializing in local ingredients which include venison casserole with creamed bacon cabbage, salmon fillet with watercress sauce and a superb selection of local 28 day hung steaks. Complemented with a specialist whiskey list, fine wine list and local hand - pulled real ales, as well as very friendly service, The Haunch is a definite 'must see' on your visit to Salisbury!

“A long wait for lunch...”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed November 3, 2012

We popped in for what we thought would be a quick lunch. The premises are an old-worlde unspoilt ancient building full of character. However, the service was dreadfully slow in the restaurant, despite not being particularly full. Our order was eventually taken, then we waited forty minutes for overcooked sausages and lumpy mash to finally arrive - not worth the wait, and not really worth the price. Certainly won't go again, and would advise friends against going.

“Skip it if you're short on time...or like burgers with buns!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed November 3, 2012 via mobile

We decided to try this place while killing some time before our tour of the Salisbury Cathedral. Although the place is quite interesting in terms of its decor, we were disappointed with the service and food. We arrived at 12:30pm and promptly gave our order. We ended up waiting 58 minutes for our food to arrive. By that time, our tap water had run dry and we were forced to call and delay our guided tour of the cathedral. We hoped the food would make up for the delay but were sadly mistaken. The Venison Steak Burger was a patty with no toppings on a topless bun. The Fish Pie was bland at best. If any meal was memorable, it would be the Venison Bangers and Mash. In the end, our delay at this place meant we could not get to Stonehenge ahead of closing. An unpleasant dining experience for sure.

“Warm Welcome for Singleton on Halloween.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 1, 2012

It was my first time in what is affectionately know as The Haunch to my Salisbury friends, I visited as a lone diner for their Halloween Midnight feast. At first I was a little intimidated walking in alone to a place where everyone appears to know each other and Salisbury much better than i do. However I was very soon at ease finding a warm welcome from staff and patrons alike. One of the oldest pubs in Salisbury, if not England, the interior is truly special and gives you the impression of stepping back in time, climbing the spiral wooden staircase to the first floor restaurant specially decorated for the occasion, I thought I'd be in for a treat this Halloween night and I wasn't disappointed. The food: simple but very well executed, the service: attentive but not intrusive and the entertainment for the evening had the whole crowd giggling and singing along. A delightful and good value evening out... I would recommend it and hope to see you all next year !

“Sunday Lunch”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed October 29, 2012

Sign outside says traditional Sunday lunch but cannot agree! Food was good but not if you were looking for a true Sunday lunch - vegetables, Roast potatoes and lots of gravy. Very small portion of veg which included sugar snap peas - not a Sunday lunch veg, 3 small roast potatoes and hardly any gravy - more supplied when asked but arrived towards the end of lunch. Starters OK but half a piece of toasted bread with chicken liver pate. Seem to be aiming to be something they are not quite, better to be a extremely good pub with food than a pub trying to be a restaurant.

Thankyou for your comments and I'm glad you enjoyed the quality of the food, although sorry you felt the portion size was a bit small - it's never an issue to ask for more, although I appreciate you shouldn't have to ! I'm more than happy to take your comments on board regarding the choice of vegetables ( even if they were fresh from the market on Saturday ! ) when floors are a tad uneven - I'll happily get some more jugs though !
Please do come back again soon to see what improvements we've made, though !

“Unique venue and good food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 24, 2012

I visited the haunch on the recommendation of a friend. The pub is charming and full of history, from the old spirit taps and the wilted hand of a card cheat. The restaurant menu looked good but we wanted a lighter lunch so ate in the upper room known as the House of Lords. Given the interesting lay out of the pub with small rooms on different levels and sloping floors (and staircase!), producing and serving good food must have its challenges but the food was very good, particularly the home made soup and ham hock terrine. Thank you for a lovely lunch.
