“A haven in the centre of Salisbury”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 12, 2012

Stayed for 2 nights on 2nd November and loved it. Room 75 was very comfortable although the bathroom was a bit tired. The hotel was lovely and warm and welcoming and the staff were excellent nothing was too much trouble. Parking is an issue we received a £50 fine as we did not get to the car park behind the hotel before 8 am to move our car to an all day car park. We have however resolved this as when we return (which we certainly plan to do) we will book parking at the hotel which do have limited spaces.

I loved the history of this hotel. The builders of Salisbury Cathedral stayed here and it has operated ever since. The entry courtyard and the wonderful restaurant were lovely. The room was okay for an older hotel. Our room was on the street and they kindly supplied ear plugs. Unfortunately the beds were like rocks and obviously need renewing as soon as possible.

This hotel was a short walk from the train station. We booked a Hop-on-Hop off bus to take us to Stonehenge and Old Sarum and the stop is at the train station so it was perfect for when we arrived in town. Their website is: GetYourGuide.com and we also booked several other cities for their bus. The hotel is in town and the town is simply charming. Do spend time walking around. The hotel was excellent but the expensive breakfast was not very good. You might want to eat elsewhere.

Room Tip: Excellent room but their pricey buffet is not worth it. Food was not very good for price. Few cafe...

We stayed her for 2 nights and booked a superior room. I appreciate the hotel is only a 3 star but was expecting a bit more of a wow factor for our room, this was a just average room with a very high and uncomfortable bed. All of the staff were friendly and helpful although I did get a little frustrated at the pace in how they work. Our room was not cleaned on the Saturday, we had to ask for this to be done at 4pm which was a little annoying.
The hotel location is ideal for the City and in the spring/summer months I would suspect the pretty courtyard is well used.
Food was average, we booked dinner bed and breakfast and only had dinner the first night, there was little choice for non meat eaters and a few dishes were not available.
We probably would not stay here again, but can see why lots of people really enjoy it.

Charming building, courteous staff but surfaces are dusty, grimy and generally dirty. The features such as fireplaces and old wood carvings give warmth & character to the rooms, but that is the main positive of the hotel. Executive room upgrade still didn't include breakfast and the restaurant is pricey. Had breakfast in a lovely local tea rom for a fraction of the cost.

The executive room was well appointed, but dusty and not cleaned, real shame.

All in all for a cheap drunken night out kind of hotel, where standards don't count then I'll recommend the Red Lion.

Dear Guest

Thank you for taking the time the review the hotel after your recent visit.

I must apologise that you found the room dusty and have passed your feedback to the head housekeeper.

With regard to the expensive breakfast as in previous reviews it only costs when booking 7.50 per person for a full continental including cereal and cooked breakfast with tea coffee and toast. I don’t believe a cafe offers these kinds of prices for all this and the ambiance of a 13 century hotel.

We hope to see you again

This Hotel has to be seen to be believed. A purpose built 13th Century Hotel. Quaint does not even enter your mind as you enter ther courtyard, (you can just imagine the coah and horses trotting up to the front door). On entering the reception you are greeted by a friendly and efficient receptionist and if you look around you will see the biggest granfather clock I have ever seen which has a skull carved on the top. Also there in reception is a genuine Man Trap. We booked a superior room and as members we were upgrade to an Executive room. Fantastic! The bathroom was very cold though, extremely clean and the bath was oval and deep, plenty of hot water too. The room itself was entirely in keeping of a 13th century house/hotel. Here I have to say that the pillows are not very good, erhaps the management should consider having a choice of say soft or firm. I only realised this when I was settling down to sleep and did not complain at the time.
The decor in the Restaurtant is again entirely in keeping with the building and the furniture and furnishings were elegant and comfortable. We were looking foward to the meal, but left a bit dissappointed. If you eat off the set menu then you should ask for vegetables because what you get is exactly what is on the menu.Having an AA rosette we perhaps expected more, but the food was good and the service was fine. Breakfast was good as well, though I would have liked to see some Honey or Caster sugar for the cereals.

Room Tip: If you do not like quaint old English Historical buildings, then do not book into this Hotel. Everyw...
