My wife and I stayed here for one night in September. This hotel is in a perfect location if you want to be near the town centre and want a peaceful nights sleep. 10 minutes walk through the Cathedral grounds and you are there! Just bear in mind that if you are coming back after 10pm, you will have to find another way back as the grounds are closed by this time. No problem as it only adds on another few minutes but you will need a map!

Now then, the hotel - This is an old inn with a more recent block addded and we were fortunate enough to secure a room in the old part. All the rooms have recently been refurbished to what I consider a very high standard. The room we were in was a good size, lovely bathroom, tea and coffee facilites and a large wall mounted flat screen television. Nice view of the grounds and river. The bed was large and very comfortable. There's no AC but this didn't matter as the room was very cool.

Breakfast was served in the main restaurant overlooking the river and was a very pleasant experience. The full English was a little lacking in content but very tasty none the less. If you don't get it included with your room rate I would give it a miss, because as lovely as it was, £12.95 per head was too much in my opinion. One last thing on the breakfast front - finishing at 9.30am on Sunday is far too early!

One minor gripe - we arrived at about 1.45pm hungry and thirsty. We asked if we could order some food and have a drink and were told yes, but we couldn't eat outside by the river because there was a wedding party coming in at 2.00pm. We were then informed we could eat in the lounge which was fine as it was very plush. So we ordered food on this basis only to be told 2 minutes later that the lounge was was for wedding guests only! We were then asked to sit in the 'pub' area which was closed and very musty. So not a pleasant experience made even worse by paying hotel prices for a sandwich and eating them in a stale smelling pub! Hotel guests should be informed at the booking stage if some facilities wil be unavailable, don't you think?

All in all though, a great hotel in a great location and I would definitely stay there again if I ever come back to Salisbury - only if breakfast is included though!

We spent a long weekend break at this hotel and found the location to be perfect - a superb location on the banks of the Avon river and 10 minutes stroll from the town centre. We read the previous reviews regarding the plumbing problems experienced by previous guests and thought that after three months these would have been sorted. How wrong we were, we had to endure cold showers on both mornings and had no confidence in the receptions answer to our complaints. The hotel obviously has serious plumbing problems but are still willing to take bookings and charge full rates without warnings to potential guests. Anyone thinking of booking here should seriously consider other options until they sort this ongoing issue. furthermore, the sound proofing in the newer extension to the old buildings is poor and from our ground floor room, we were awoken by guests walking around on the squeeky floor boards from the room above. Apologies if this sounds like a drip session, but having paid a substantial rate for an executive room, we at least expected to have hot water through the taps!!

We stayed here for 2 nights last week - had a lovely room facing the river, on the ground floor so the french doors opened to the garden. First morning upon opening the curtains, 2 ducks were there, waiting for handouts! What fun. They showed up morning and evening.
Breakfast was very good - nice susages, excellent porridge (any hotel that can make excellent porridge deserves special mention). The evening menu seemed a bit pricey, so we opted for suppers at the Greyfisher pub, a 2 minute walk away. Excellent pub grub for 5 quid.
I would highly recomment getting a river view room - you can see the Cathedral spire lit up at night. Walk to Cathedral and town a very pleasant 10 minutes - can see lots of roses and also gardens backing onto the river. Salisbury a great base to explore Old Sarum and Stonehenge. Stop by the Cathedral later in the day when they have Evensong (at 5:30 I think) and you can hear the fabulous acoustics...

Stayed for 3 nights on a credit crunch buster deal which I booked through the main Legacy hotel site. Problem with that was I had to pay all the amount upfront, which was a bit weird. Then nearer the time, on checking with the hotel, they did not have my booking and I had to chase up the main hotel site. It seems that Legacy are some sort of holding company over individually run hotels. The price was really good. The hotel was in an excellent location, next to the river, with its own car park (an issue with some of the centrally-located hotels) and within a lovely walk away to the centre of Salisbury - the cathedral side. Unfortunately when we were there the weather was atrocious and we couldnt make use of the lovely riverside terrace. Service and staff were good and friendly. Food was odd. Breakfast OK though the quality of ingredients such as eggs and sausages could have been much better. The dinner menu looked good but the food seemed as if it had been brought in and heated up. Wine very expensive for what it was - we knew some of the wines and there was about a 300% mark up. However this price was countered by the excellent overall price so you would just have to be careful if you went to stay there. A mixed review - sorry! Overall not bad, but could be a lovely gem of the hotel with a bit of effort!

The Rose and Crown is a beautiful half timbered medieval building (at the front) with a large modern extension to the rear.
The hotel is located a pleasant 10 min stroll from the city centre through the cathedral grounds. Be warned the town gates are closed at 10pm prompt, to both pedestrians and vehicles. After this time you just have to return via the main road which takes a few minutes more. Large free car park to the rear of the hotel.
Our room was of a good size, with patio doors leading out to a garden and down to the river (don't leave the doors open as the ducks come in!) The bathroom was of above average size - but looking at some of the fitments I think we possibly had one of the 'accessible' rooms. The room was well presented with flat screen TV and plenty of storage.
Breakfasts were fine, usual hotel fayre - hot food was freshly cooked to order. We had one evening meal in the hotel which was good.
Dining room and housekeeping staff were friendly. However, two out of the three receptionists we encountered appeared disinterested and struggled to acknowledge guests.
Minor gripes which have been mentioned previously
Cold water - you can't get any. Cold taps at best give tepid water and sometimes water hot enough to wash in.
Toilets that flush themselves - at intervals our cistern would leak water into the bowl.
Noise from the room above. Can't believe that a relatively new build failed to include sound insulation. You could hear the chap in the upstairs room walk across the floor, put things down on the floor, move chairs etc.
One the whole a good convenient hotel from which to visit Salisbury and the surrounding area.
