“800 years before your eye's”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 7, 2013

I have visited this wonderful place many times over the years and I always find something new to discover. this time I climbed the Spire and there before your eyes are the secrets to the construction of this beautiful building,
Millennium old timbers and spectacular views over this wonderful little City await you if you tackle the 300 plus steps !
Our Guide was most informative and helpful, the tour takes about two hours so don't go up if you are on a tight schedule as happened to someone on our tour, you cant wander about up there on your own.
Well worth the effort!

“Pure Gothic and Grand”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 7, 2013

My wife and I saw many wonderful cathedrals during our four week stay in the UK, but I have to say that Salisbury is my favorite. I love the way its spire pierces the sky, visible for miles and miles in the flat plain where it stands. Built in only 38 years (likely a European record for speed of construction), from 1220 to 1258, its architecture is thoroughly Gothic. The spire it the tallest in England and the lovely cloisters are the largest in the country. The adjacent Chapter House features 13th century friezes of Old Testament scenes and one of four original copies of the Magna Carta. This one has been housed here since 1225.
The close, which surrounds the cathedral, was intended as a sort of Medieval housing development when built in the 13th century and today there are about 75 buildings within the walls, which themselves are made of stone taken from the former cathedral at Old Sarum, the nearby settlement which preceded Salisbury. Some of the buildings are among the finest houses of the city. The green space offers a lovely area to stroll.
A park and that thoroughly English landscape, a water meadow, border the close and are well worth the time to explore as well.

“Visit to Salisbury”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 7, 2013

Myself and four friends visited Salisbury as a means of seeing each once again. Although we intended to go to the Cathedral we did not get there until late in the day. The Cathedral is set in some splendid grounds but has been undergoing some external renovation (scaffolding outside). The entrance fee is quite expensive and you pay extra to go to the top of the Tower. As we left it late we decided not to go fully in but went through the cloisters and surround and Maga Carta exhibition which were free. Will do the full tour next visit.

“So picturesque”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 6, 2013

We were on our way to Stonehenge and needed to travel through Salisbury. Wow. What a picturesque town. We ate at one of the pubs. I had a meat pie. It was probably no biggie for the locals, but I found it very tasty. I would have liked another except I ate the last one. Just love the fact that they make enough for the day and then that's it. We had to board the bus and rush to Stonehenge, but the walk through town was memorable. We took the train to Salisbury and the bus to Stonehenge. We loved the old buildings full of charm and culture. So much better than London with its Starbucks, the Gap and typical stores.

On the way back from Stonehenge, we visited the Salisbury Cathedral. A must see. You must go inside. We also sat on the bench by the pond and watched the graceful white swans. The little boy with his mother feeding the swans. We vowed to come back and spend more time in the English countryside,

“Lovely place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 5, 2013

Glorious architecture, very friendly feel to the building and there is Magna Carta to view as well. We had a cup of tea in the cafe and the food looked excellent, although we did not eat there.
