Advertised as Three Diamond English Tourist Board Rated accommodation we expected The New Inn to be of a certain standard. The bedroom was clean and tidy and presentable, however, that is where the positive comments end!
We were welcomed by a strange little lady, and were taken though the public bar (which was closed by the way) and shown to our room upstairs; there were no other guests staying here at the moment... does this say something?
The room was clean and tidy, although there were a few issues, such as the main light not working (bedside lights were working fine) and no milk for the tea/coffee making facilities (UHT or fresh). The rest of the building was not so well maintained, the side door (main entrance and exit for B&B customers) was almost rotten through, this was supposed to be a fire door, the ceiling in the breakfast room was falling down in places and we were told that the sink in the kitchen was leaking so the landlady was not able to wash up....!
The New Inn was a pub at some point, however, there is no evidence that the pub is ever open for to the public any more.
Served in the old restaurant, breakfast was a basic at best; we had been asked the previous afternoon what we fancied for breakfast, and had both decided on the Veggie option. The main breakfast was fine, but there was no cereal or toast on offer, and the teapot was decidedly grubby. The landlady was rather odd as well, she tottered about talking to herself and was brutally honest with her comments to the extent that you felt uncomfortable listening to what she had to say.
Overall I would say that the room was fine - nothing special, but clean and adequate – for £60 though the New Inn was seriously let down by the general ambience of the place, a rather basic breakfast, and the oddities of the staff.
This bed and breakfast certainly does not warrant the three diamonds given by the English Tourist Board and our concerns have been reported to the Wiltshire Tourist Board.
