It's quite difficult to write this review as based on the food alone id be giving this place 5 stars. However, the service tonight was nothing short of a disaster so the net rating is 3 stars.
We went for Sunday lunch at 5pm, I ordered chicken Sunday roast and my wife ordered chicken pie. Both were exceptionally tasty, the chicken was succulent and moist, perfectly cooked along with the potatoes and gravy which was exceptional. Prawn starter was good and sticky toffee pudding and cheesecake deserts were fantastic.
However, the service was very poor from start to finish which may be due to a large group of 35 seated in the dining room but some of the errors were just plain sloppy disorganisation.
When we arrived we asked if there was a table for 2 plus a child and after some um'ing and ah'ing we were told we'd need to sit in the bar due to a large group arriving in an hour. We were fine with this and were shown to a table in the bar. That is where the service started to creak, we weren't given a menu, we weren't even told we needed to order at the bar and we were just left to try and work it out and fend for ourselves.
We managed to find one menu on another table so we both read from the same menu. I would say that the menu had gone towards more routine pub grub (wraps, sandwiches, burgers) away from what I remember which was higher end restaurant food with a French feel to it. I'm fine with that though if this is what their clientele want and as long as the quality remains high, which it has.
We ordered at the bar and paid up front. When the starter arrived my table still hadn't been wiped down and had sticky substance on it from the last diners/drinkers. Surely if someone sits down to dine in the bar it is common practice to wipe the table and set it up for eating?!
When my starter arrived I was impressed, decent sized portion and juicy prawns. The waitress offered us a high chair for the little one which we accepted. 20 minutes later id finished my starter and the high chair still hadn't arrived. We chased it up and ordered some more drinks at the same time.
Our main course then arrived, still no high chair and no sign of the drinks we ordered either.
My wife had to struggle through her entire meal with a baby in one hand whilst trying to eat. The staff were standing round chatting to the male punters and showed little to no interest in serving customers.
I managed to get ones attention and chased up the high chair and drinks. 5 minutes later she came back and said there weren't any high chairs as the group of 35 were about to sit down to dine and some of them might want to use a high chair. Disgraceful service, especially given the fact we had ordered a high chair some 30-40 minutes before.
Anyway, we struggled though and ate the main and had a desert which was very nice. Then when the bill came they tried to charge us again for all the food we had already paid for at the bar at the start. As an apology they took £4.50 off out £60 bill. Grossly inadequate given the circus we had endured throughout.
I would go back on the strength of the food alone but something seriously needs to be done to sort out the service at this place!
