“Miniscule portions. Maximum price. Criminal Rip Off”
I cannot believe how people have rated this restaurant so high. Are they friends or relatives of the owner?
Went with high expectations - never been so disappointed or, indeed angry at being totally ripped off.
Went mid week - place was empty, yet it took 1hr. 15 to be served with main course.
Would like to have said that this was due to the food being cooked from scratch, but my "pork" had definitely been cooked advanced and reheated.
Initially we were taken aback by the prices - £22 for 2 courses (no vegetables - minimum of one vegetable was £4 on top of the £22), so we went for "no extras", assuming that at the prices charged, the portions would be at least reasonably sized.
My starter - crab cakes, turned out to be three "cakes", the size of a 10p piece, quarter of an inch thick, on a minute sliver of black pudding. These were served on a 12 inch dining plate. According to the menu, they came with mandarin, carrot and mandarin puree and white crab quenelle., Just where these "additions" were, I do not know. They must have been the dirty looking swirl around the plate which added nothing whatsoever to the hunger in my stomach, or could be attributable to the price.
Worse was to come. The saddle back pork, monkfish, cucumber, grapefruit sauce, black pudding dauphoinoise, carrot puree, poached rhubarb and baby gem - if not so extortionately priced would have been laughable. All that appeared (again on a 12 inch plate), was a minute piece of dried up boot leather (purporting to be pork), again - all the "additions" were nothing but a "swirl" on the plate. The piece of pork (I am not exaggerating at all) consisted of two fork fulls of meat.
This place is disgusting. It cannot be said that you are paying for the surroundings - it is on the edge of a 1950's council estate, part of a 1960's shopping parade, next to a launderette, a hairdressers, a chemist, and opposite the Co-Op and Fish and Chip shop. That would be ok if the food was good and of at least reasonable value, but this was the worst value meal I have ever had and would suggest that anyone who does not want to come out, after waiting 1hr 15min to be served, is hungrier than they went in and to be very much lighter in pocket, not to visit.
Went with a part of 6 - all had different choices on the menu - seemed that one of their starters of asparagus was very good - but not one of us was satisfied with the main course or the cost of paying a hefty price for what would be a matter of pence to put on the table. Also, one of the party had to send the fish main course back as it came to the table raw in the middle. The main course "roasted pepper on flat bread" - that must have cost a matter of pence to prepare. It was something suitable to put in a pack lunch box!
I always like to support local restaurants/shops etc but "Dough" are just just taking the micky of local people who probably think that this is how other restaurants are, and relying on past reports. Less than 2 miles away are excellent eateries who are not ripping customers off in either Headingley or Horsforth. Strongly suggest you go there and give this rip off joint a wide berth.
On complaining of the service/value for money/food, we were offered complimentary deserts or coffee, but that was hardly the point. It should not have been necessary.
On leaving the restaurant, I was heavily tempted to visit the fish and chip shop opposite as by that time I was starving and I am sure that their food would have been excellent, substantial, filling and value for money - but after paying £22 for nothing, decided to have a night time sandwich at home instead and put this place down to a bad experience.
