“Fantastic day out”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 15, 2013 via mobile

We had a fantastic family day out here. It's really good value compared to similar places. The park is good with things for older and younger children. The bird garden is really interesting and the house is lovely inside. It's a great idea to put things in the children can touch and to have the dressing up room so they don't get bored. There was something for all of us here and we had a fab day out.

“you will love it!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 4, 2013

want to find a day out for all the family? well look no further. £5 admission charge (£4 for concessions) and this includes the hall, Edwardian gardens, playgrounds, Bird Garden and walks plus parking . Wow ! Lovely weather today midweek, not very busy , just right . The Bird Garden was brilliant especially the Africa exhibit where there are no barriers between you and the birds. The Edwardian Gardens are stunning with fantastic herbaceous borders packed with plants and all in tip top condition with gardeners working as we walked round. There is a good childrens play area with adventure climbing frames and slides and a helterskelter which unfortunately wasn't in use today.. Icecreams very good value at £1.20 for a big cornet and toilets in a pretty good condition. An interesting house with some nice bright airy rooms unusual for a country house with lots of printed information and also informative guides . We would definitely reccommend for a good day out .

“A great place to visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 4, 2013

I was looking for somewhere to take an elderly relative in a wheelchair, and a friend suggested Lotherton Hall – and it was an excellent suggestion! But it's not just for oldies, there's plenty here to keep younger folk amused too.

The entry fee is just £5 for adults, and reduced for oldies and youngies, although if you don't want to enter the house there's a public footpath running through the grounds so you can park elsewhere and walk in for free.

The house itself was interesting – not as impressive as the more well known stately homes, but definitely £5-worth – although the upstairs was not accessible to wheelchairs. The gardens are extensive and varied, and although there are some areas that you can only really access on foot there was plenty that we could take the wheelchair to. The adventure playground and funfair weren't really on our radar, but looked like they would be great for kids. The café is great whether you just want tea and cake or more of a meal. But the unexpected highlight was the bird garden – a huge variety of birds including condors, and we spent about an hour and a half in there.

“Lots of space and lots of things to do”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 2, 2013

Fairly cheap day out here. Excellent bird area - especially the Africa section where you actually walk amongst the birds - large and small. Condors still in huge area. Good childrens playground for all ages in main play area and spread through adjoining field. Helter skelter and two rides also there on our visit in school holiday. Very good ice creams and clean toilets. A very good day out.

“A good day out with something for everyone”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 1, 2013

Yes, there's an entrance fee, it cost £4 per adult if you've got a Leeds Card.

However, the value you get included with entrance to the bird garden and the stately home is probably worth that as they've got to pay for bird feed and gardeners to keep the place going!

On a fair summer's day the gardens are a wonderful walk around, the playground is a good distraction for the kids and the bird garden has some interesting vultures and ostriches in it.

The stately home is a fairly interesting example of a wealthy coal mining family's retreat in the 1800s up to the 1920s. There's a short film about the history of the house (has a good eye-witness account from the gardener who worked there back in the day but could do with an update) and a extensive collection of China plates (if you like that sort of thing).

All in all, a nice day out with a bit of something for kids, history buffs or nature enthusiasts.
