“Got to love a bit of Meat.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 7, 2014

1kg steak to share for two.. Sides were tasty, wine was good.
Staff are attentive and friendly upstairs but a little too much at times at the table, once we have said no to something don't send someone else to ask the same question until you say yes just to stop them coming, table was too small for two people to eat comfortably and there felt like there were too many people squashed into the cellar dining area.
Definitely recommend the food, would definitely recommend a visit. I'll be going back again without a doubt!

We're really glad you loved our meat, we think our suppliers and chefs do a great job.
I'm sorry you kept getting offered the same thing by our staff, we shouldn't do that and it detracts from our offer.
Hope you come back to see us soon.

“Very good Sunday Roast”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 6, 2014 via mobile

We decided to visit after a Sunday afternoon shopping in Leeds, on the basis that it was the place closest to where we were that had good reviews. We weren't disappointed.

We ate in the bar, which was clean and modern in design. At 5 on a Sunday afternoon it was just busy enough to have some atmosphere, while still being quiet enough to have plenty of space for our pushchair and for our toddler to wander about a bit.

Service was friendly and attentive. Our toddler was provided with a goody bag of things to keep her entertained. One minor quibble was that our food was brought out before the toddlers arrived, so we had a minute or two (which felt like much longer) of sitting on our hands, trying to deter her from making a grab for our plates. We would have felt more relaxed if she'd been served first.

We both had Roast beef, topside isn't the tenderest of cuts, but given this limitation, it was very good. Pink in the middle, although perhaps a little tough at the edges. Great horseradish and mustard to accompany. Apparently the beef was 'treacle cured' but what ever the effect of this process, it was to subtle for either of us to be able to detect it.

Veg was very good too. Great roast potatoes, mashed carrot (I think - might have been some swede in there too?) and spinach both very nice. We also had some cauliflower cheese as an additional side dish, which was great.

Two things could have made a very good plate great. First, the spinach, potato and beef were presented on top of the mashed carrot. Consequently most mouthfuls had at least some carrot in - it would have been nice to have been able to chose whether to include carrot in a forkful or not. Second, red cabbage was served in the Yorkshire pudding. I quite like red cabbage, but again, would like to have been able to separate it from the yorkie so that I could have enjoyed the yorkie with the beef without it all tasting of red cabbage.

We both had a glass of the Bodegas Castrano Monastrell (red) which worked well with the beef.

It was a very big plate of food, so we decided against a pudding.

Overall, one of the more expensive Sunday roast options in Leeds, but the price was justified by the surroundings and the quality of the food and cooking (although a more tender cut of beef would be a welcome improvement given the price). If only the red cabbage hadn't been served inside the Yorkshire pudding, it would have been a truly great meal.

We're really glad you enjoyed your time at Rare and have taken your comments on board re the topside.
We're trying to slice it that bit thinner so it's as tender as possible and also had a long red cabbage debate!
Toddlers are a handful (I have one), we always try to get their food out first now!

“Like steak? Then you'll like rare”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 6, 2014 via mobile

Amazing steak. Fact. Limited menu in so much as if you don't like meat then you probably shouldn't book but if you do then you'll not be disappointed. Service is great, food is 1st class and the ambience is pretty good and the full size cow whilst at 1st slightly off putting makes a unique talking point. Definitely worth a visit. Fantastic cocktails and a great gin selection too.

Hello Mat72wood.
You summed up a RARE experience pretty well!
"Service is great, food is 1st class and the ambience is pretty good"
As for Sue... our resident Longhorn Cow... people seem to have become quite attached to her. She is indeed a beautiful talking point... but for us, more so, a reminder of the relationship between us, the customer, our local suppliers and the amazing creatures they rear. Sue is from Taste Tradition in Thirsk - a supplier we are as proud of for the amazing meat they produce, as we are for the way they look after the beautiful creatures that the meat comes from, including Sue.
Thanks for taking the time to review RARE - we hope to see you back again sometime soon....
Oh - by the way... we are making quite a few exciting extensions to our steak offer! So a perfect excuse to pop by soon.

“Superb Sunday Roast”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 2, 2014

Visitied on a Sunday lunchtime. My husband and friend had the pork belly sandwich, which they both assured me was fantastic, and I had roast beef. I can honestly say that it was the best Sunday roast that I have ever eaten. The service was great, really friendly staff and Sue the stuffed cow was an extra special treat.

Hello StJohnB.
We are becoming quite a destination for Sunday lunch... so pleased you joined us last Sunday.
The Belly Pork sandwich is a great choice... but we think you have the edge with the Roast Beef! It's got to be a Roast on a Sunday ;)
We'll let Sue know you gave her a mention.
Hope to see you again sometime soon for another Sunday lunch... or maybe a special Saturday evening with Sue and a few bottles of vino!
Thanks for taking the time to review RARE.

“Couldn't fault it!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 31, 2014

Went for a second visit and were impressed. The service was great as was the food. We had a couple of suggestions such as a wider choice of steak and sauces which we discussed with the manager who told us they do want to expand the menu whilst keeping it specialised. Would definitely recommend the triple cooked chips - best I've ever tasted. The Eton mess is also lovely! It's an expensive night but very nice. We will visit again, maybe to try the burgers or Sunday lunch.

Hello CostelloSa.
Thanks for taking the time to review RARE. After a 2nd visit - we are glad we still continue to impress - 5*s from a seasoned reviewer (39!) always means a lot to us.
It sounds like our Manager might have tipped you off - but we have some plans to extend our steak offer quite considerably. It's one of the things we really seem to have gotten a name for doing very well - so we want to do it even better. Watch this space.
We're really pleased you enjoyed your RARE experience - look forward to seeing you again soon.
