“Lovely hotel, good value, modern!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 17, 2013

A lovely hotel, complimentary glass of wine was a nice touch, pleased to say it was good quality wine.
Rooms were really good value at £65 per couple per night, very clean and modern. The shutters in the room were a total pain, unable to shut them which is a bit of a nightmare when the mirror is right by the window, and have to get fully dressed before doing make up and hair.
All in all though a very pleasant stay, would come again.

Dear Rackerscrackers

Thank you for taking the time to share with Trip Advisors users your experience with us during your recent stay in Leeds.

I was pleased you like our complementary glass of wine off upon check in and that you thought our rooms offered value for money.

I can only apologise for the shutters not working correctly, due to the hot weather, the glue holding the shutters together has melted, meaning that the sliding mechanism has become stiff. We are looking at an alternative shutter system.

We stayed at the New Ellington for 1 night only, got a good deal for £60 on a Sunday night. The hotel is ideally located if you want to expolre the centre of Leeds, either shopping or for entertainement. It is nicely decorated but is a bit tired in one or two places. The staff are very helpful and polite and make for an easy stay. We were lucky enoughh to get one of the few parking spaces available but I imagine it can be difficult to park if you do not as it is metered parking around the hotel. As with a couple of earlier reviews, there are some small things that let the hotels down ie: shutters not working, expensive drinks, robes etc but if you can a stay at the right price it is definately worth staying at the New Ellington.

Got a deal on Secret Escapes for £130 for a Saturday night with breakfast, 3 course evening meal and a bottle of wine. Nicely decorated hotel, room was a good size, great comfortable large bed, shower took some working out but got there in the end.

Both the evening meal and breakfast was good but we thought £15.80 for 2 pints of lager was a bit expensive, we expect to pay more in hotels but that was too much, we were glad the wine was included in the deal. Staff were very pleasant and professional.

Got to the hotel about 1:30pm so managed to get a parking space for £14, the street parking is limited to 5 hours, we planned to go to the city for a few drinks so moving the car after the 5 hours was not an option.

Dear Mrsvark

Thank you for taking the time to share with Trip Advisors users your experience with us during your recent stay in Leeds.

I am very happy you took the opportunity to use our fantastic Secret Escapes offer that has proved most popular among our guests. Watch out for our own exclusive offers coming soon

I am slightly concerned about the charge of two pints however, which is a lot more than what you should have paid.

If you contact me directly I will happily sort this out for you.

Stayed there two times ,first time for a few days and second one for one week as minimum so i can give quite a honest review about this hotel ...The best in it was the bed ! Egyptian cotton makes me to sleep good and long ,but the room is not the best at all -looks old and must have some changes and to be renovated! Stayed in a few different rooms that time so i can compare...Literally,it is a dirty for a full 4 stars and the worst that out door had a broken lock ,the main door and bathrooms's door as well ,so was quite not comfortable.. other problem ,that for me is very weird that hotel do not have any security !! i never seen nobody who looks after safety...Many times i came back late at night in that hotel and the door was fully opened ,so everyone can go inside ...many times there was no receptionist or any other staff in a lobby or at the desk !!For a couple days to stay in is ok .
Girl with a dark hairs was very helpful and nice ,as the manager James as well!

Dear Vera,

Thank you for taking the time to share with Trip Advisors users your experience with us during your recent stay in Leeds.

Firstly thank you for your comments about our beds, 94% of our customers comment on how wonderful our beds are and how luxurious our linen is.

I have past your comments to James and our Guest Relations Assistants and they do remember looking after you and the delightful conversations you had.

I’m at a loss concerning your comments concerning your door lock and bathroom lock and have reviewed the maintenance logs and feedback during your stay. Security is paramount to us and should a lock be faulty we wouldn’t sell the room.

We do have Night Porters on duty on an evening and can only assume they were dealing with a guest when you returned the front door is locked on an evening and your key card operates the door occasionally guest do not close the door which is why it may have been open when you returned. We have changed the way the door operates now so this will not occur again.

We stayed 2 nights. The hotel Is stylish and the staff are great; We had some nice drinks from the barmen who were very pleasant. The food was good and the service at dinner was excellent. However, some things let the hotel down. As has been said before, the aircon was not very good on the hot nights we had. The wooden shutter that is in place of curtains was off its rail and we could not move it; we called down and they said maintenance would sort it out. When we got back we tried to move it but it would not budge; it took two staff (incl the deputy manager) to close it but it was not moving properly at all. We were promised that it would be fixed or we would be moved rooms, neither of these things happened. By that time smaller niggles like no robes (as per the advert) and only 1 pair of slippers between the 2 of us were let go. Some of the carpets leading to and around the lift area were not clean.
The previous poster who was dissatisfied was quite right to point out what they found unsatisfactory; these things should not happen in a 4 star hotel.

Dear Ranulph,

Thank you for taking the time to share with Trip Advisors users your experience with us during your recent stay in Leeds.

The Restaurant and Bar team were delighted you enjoyed their service and our new menu.

I have taken on board your comments concerning the air conditioning and the shutter and as you have pointed out this has been mentioned before.

While the shutters provide excellent blackout and give the room a luxurious feel they can be challenging if they come from the runners, we are in the process of changing all the runners to ensure they glide with ease.

We are currently investigating why the air conditioning can be a problem, as we have had a full service of all the units. As I speak the units are being re-serviced and we are carrying out a full review of the current system.

Please accept my apologies for missing bathrobes and slippers I cannot explain how this happened other than human error, to which we all occasionally fall foul. Of course had you called reception then we could have taken them to your room straight away.

All our carpets have been cleaned as you can appreciate occasionally they can quickly show stains from the previous guest we do have carpets cleaned on a monthly basis.

We decided to spend a night away with friends at our favourite restaurant by staying in one of their rooms. The bed was fantastic very comfy with crisp cotton sheets. Bathroom large and fluffy towels with lots of little bottles for our convenience :)
I especially loved the coffee machine in out room ( unfortunately our friends didn't have one in theirs)
The food as always was just fantastic ...... Oh and the gin garden I haven't managed all of them yet but I keep trying :)

Stayed for one night in an executive room for the Friday night dinner experience. Champagne cocktails and canapes in the Gin Garden (over 100 gins!) and a 4 course tasting menu in their Digby's restaurant where I worked as a waitress back in the late 70s! Changed a lot since then.

Room was very spacious with a very comfortable, superking sized bed. No tissues in the bathroom, just an empty box. Nothing in the mini bar except fresh milk even though it says in the guest info that there should have been. Asked about it at reception and was told you have to pre-order it. Seemed a bit strange when they had taken an extra 50 quid deposit against anything we had in the room. Only Freeview on the TV so my partner couldn't catch up with the cricket much to his disappointment. Room had air conditioning which helped as it had been a very hot day.

Food was very good, the wine list was a bit limited, though the wines we had were good. One of the waiters was usually behind the bar so struggled a bit when asked what some of the things were on the tasting menu. Overall the service was good.

Breakfast was also in the restaurant. The milk for the cereal was off but was quickly replaced by the apologetic waitress. The fruit salad and the cooked breakfast were good with freshly made coffee.

Check in and out was very slow. Had to wait at the front desk for more than 20 mins as the computer system wouldn't process the booking. Limited private parking (we missed the last spot at 2.30 in the afternoon). Can park on the street but you'll have to move the car after 2 hours. We had to do this twice, once in the afternoon and again in the morning. We did see a traffic warden on the Saturday morning so make sure to take plenty of change as it's a fiver for 2 hours, a lot less than a parking fine! 24 hour car park is more expensive than that!

Room Tip: Book in advance to get a good room rate. Friday night dinner experience is a good package.

Dear Rossa9591,

Thank you sharing your opinion with Trip Advisors readers concerning your recent stay I was pleased to read that overall you enjoyed your trip down memory lane I quite agree that it’s very different to how it used to be!

Please accept my apologies for the little oversights missing during your stay I have spoken with the team and corrective training has taken place.

Our normal standard is not to stock our mini bars as we find that guest prefer to choose their drinks for the mini bar personally.

I’m sorry that your husband couldn’t watch the cricket but we find majority of guest prefer to either be trying our range of 100 gins or soaking up the city.

It is our standard as in most hotels to pre-authorise you on check in which is for any extra’s you may have in the hotel.

I do hope that we will have the opportunity to welcome you back to The New Ellington for another trip down memory lane.
