We have stayed here many times before for different occasions. We come to Leeds for my partners birthday, we decided to have 2 nights in the hotel. We booked the offer online of bed & breakfast including dinner on the first night, and also upgraded to the 'Upperdeck' room I rec a call a week before we arrived advising me that the onsite restaurant was closed and since i had the deal of dinner on the first night then we could either have room service or eat in the pub. I wasn't too bothered by this so long as we could get some food.
On our arrival to the hotel we were supposed to get a VIP welcome to which we did not, we had to stand in a queue to check in like everyone else. We were explained to where our room was etc and that we could have room service or eat in the pub for our meal. When we turned around to look at the restaurant we could see it was packed! We asked why we were told the restaurant was closed when in fact it was not....the response we got was ' that is what we tell people when the restaurant is fully booked!' we were not happy about this at all, had we been told it was fully booked we would of accepted that but to be lied too is never a good thing!
We decided to go to the pub for our food, we walked in and it was packed with people drinking and socialising before they headed off out into Leeds, this usually isn't a problem but when we eventually got a table it was too loud for us to hold a conversation. We went to the bar and asked what we could get as part of the deal and we were told u can have whatever u like on the menu so long as it is not steak, we thought this was reasonable and looked at the menu. The menu does not offer much choice at all, we looked at it for a while but decided there was nothing we fancied and decided on room service instead. We went back to our room only to find the problem of there is no where to sit and eat room service in the room other than on the bed, there is a dressing table with a chair built in but no good when 2 of you want to eat. We looked at the room service menu and again not much choice, by this time we had been sorting out food for over an hour and a half but the menus are not the best, we decided to go back down to the bar and just get something rather than wasting it. When we went back down it had got busier and after another wait we got a table. We ordered our food and our starter came out quite quickly, we ordered the tomato soup and a flatbread and to be honest i cannot fault it, it was beautiful. We then had to wait over 35 minutes for our main course to come out, it came eventually and again was nice and whilst sitting eating it our desserts were brought to our table! the girl looked at us and could see we had just started our mains so walked past us with them. We finished our main and asked for desserts and they came out 20 minutes later! so not very fast at getting food out!
We went back to our room and this is where we started to notice the problems with the room, the blinds were so dusty when i closed them the dust fell off, the bed side lamp was broken and couldn't be re positioned, the shower had limescale on, so much so i had to clean it before i got in and the shower door was covered also. All surfaces in the room were covered in marks and cup rings. I do not believe we had the better quality linen or duvet, as we have stayed many times before this was the same quality as the previous times in a normal room.
We had a good nights sleep and got up to go for breakfast the next morning, the breakfast is beautiful, i could not fault it. Only problem we noticed was one of the staff dropped cutlery on the floor and picked it up and put it straight back in the container with the rest of them!
We spent the rest of the day in the pool/sauna/jaquzzi, it was fine but the childrens swimming lessons that were going on in the pool were really quite noisy so it meant it wasn't very relaxing.
The rest of the time spent there was fine, a lot of christmas parties going on but you could not hear them in the room so no problems there.
We come to check out on our last day and were told there was a charge of food and a newspaper, i asked why there was a charge for food as we had the deal for food and i was given no explanation but told it had been took off and there was just the newspaper charge to pay, i thought the newspaper was complimentary but didn't mind having to pay for it.....until i was told it was £1.90!!
I understand we had quite a few problems but all in all this hotel is very nice, the staff are very helpful and friendly and the room decor and size is very good. I hope this has just been because they are very busy coming up to Christmas, not really an excuse but i hope this isn't how the hotel is going to be from now on. as we always enjoyed coming for our weekend away.
