I discovered Ponden many, many years ago while walking on the Moors. Have never known any guest house to combine so exquisitely such a sense of relaxation with fantastic food and a location to outshine the best.
Brenda Taylor cooks wholesome, inspired and fragrant food in abundance. Her vegetarian options are superlative - she is vegetarian herself - but she also cooks fabulous meat dishes. There are no televisions, trouser presses and gadgetry in the rooms, and you wouldn't want them. There is artistic flair everywhere and an easy goingness which is utterly infectious.
The prices are extremely reasonable and set above a reservoir, the views are sensational. My favourite room is 'the blue room', though all of them are cosy, comfortable and furnished with idiosyncratic charm.
Conversation round the refectory table or around the fire are a joy. Very, very special with no pretension. My favourite place to be anywhere in England.
