“Gothic”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 16, 2013

I brought a group of university students on a Brit. Lit. study trip in May for two nights. We had been reading Gothic literature and some of the students immediately identified this as a Gothic mansion. The rooms were clean and spacious, though, and the staff quite helpful. Some of the showers do seem to dispense only cold water, though, and while the breakfast was OK, the optional dinner was execrable--perhaps the regular cook was off that night. Anyway, we opted to eat out the second night--had an excellent Sunday Roast at the Old Haworth House. My students were also discomfited at the lack of Wi-Fi, but they were able to use it at the hotel across the street (as long as they ordered something).

I enjoyed my stay at this hostel BUT there were 4 toilets out of order and 3 showers that only ran cold water. I think they should have been fixed straight away but they stayed unuseable throughout my stay . I would still stay at this hostel again as it is a lovely building with friendly staff.

This was a nice little place, clean and cheerful, with rooms which are comfortable and warm. Really impressed with the breakfast especially - yum! :) Would highly recommend the place, especially the fruit salad and cream in the morning - and the fry up!

4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 3, 2012

we stayed here for 1 night before our stay in another b and b in the village(wish we,d stayed here for the 2 nights)
It was £25 for the night, and £4,95 each for breakfast,
now for the good points
The building is a really old very interesting property, The staff are equivilant to what you,d get in a 4 star hotel, nothing was too much trouble, always on hand with a smile,
most of the rooms have bunk beds, there is only one double room, the rooms arent on -suite,but there is a sink in your room,
the room was reasonably clean,(some rubbish was under the bunk beds, although a bit tatty, but what do you expect for £25,!!! but the bedding was clean, and the matresses were very comfortable
Now for the £4.95 breakfast, normally it is help yourself to a cooked breakfast, but as there was only 4 people having a cooked breakfast it was cooked to order, which was beautifully presented, they even do vegetarian sausages, which came with toast or bread and butter,
before your cooked breakfast, you help yourself to a choice of fruit juices, fruit salad, yogurts, 4 different cereals, freshly baked croisants, you can have any or all of these ,plus you help yourself to tea or coffee, yet again as much as you would like,Id defy anyone to find fault with the service or the quantity of foods at breakfast, all in a lovely sized dining room, with lovely views,
There is a self catering kitchen/small dining space, available if you want to cook your own breakfast or other meals,
there is also a guests lounge, with magazines and books,a room with a ping pong table in it, another room that has a large connect four game, and a pool table and a football table,
Now the negative points , we had room 16 that didnt have a proper window, just a sky light window, and unfortunately it started raining heavily at 5,30 in the morning, and the noise on the skylight was awful, it woke me up ,and as it rained for hours I didnt get back to sleep,
we dont mind walking., but from the hostel to the top of the village is about 1 1/2 miles, uphill and not a very practical walk with young children,as no footpath in places,so just something to keep in mind
We will definately go back, but we will ask for a different room,

Room Tip: try to not get room 16 or take very good earplugs

Echoing other reviews, I couldn't fault this hostel. I'm a member so my stay cost £9 per night for a bed in a female dorm (8 beds). Spacious rooms, lovely shower room and loo.

The mansion is splendid with stained glass windows, marble fireplaces and glorious oak barleytwist columns on the upstairs landing.

Spotless bedding, comfy mattresses and glorious walks straight from the hostel.

Highly recommended.

Hostel in a wonderful grand old house. The bedrooms were clean and of a good size (unlike some hostels where they can be a bit squeezed) and the beds were comfortable (we all slept like logs!). The staff are really friendly and very helpful - we arrived with no clear view of what we wanted to do or where we wanted to go, and they provided some good ideas, directions and all sorts of other helpful information (yup, we were a bit clueless that we'd arrived in Bronte country, can you believe!). The breakfasts, for a fee, are great - we didn't need to eat again until late afternoon! The evening meal (homemade soup and a roll, pork and apple casserole and vegetables, and sticky toffee pudding and ice cream) was really delicious and an absolute bargain - because there was a large party eating (and they could cook in volume) we got the whole meal for 7.95 each, and our 6 year old daughter ate for free! Be aware that the self-catering kitchen is down some steep stairs in the old servants area so isn't accessible for people with mobility problems. Would highly recommend.

My 3 night Stay here was very pleasant and relaxing. The staff are extremely helpful and friendly and have local knowledge of the area.

It was a bit out of the way from the main part of Haworth but the walk wasn't too bad if you like hills.

Staying in the building is great as it is an old mansion nestled in a garden behind the road.

Worth the stay if you want to relax and enjoy Yorkshire.
