My wife and I have visited and stayed at this hotel, both before and during the period of Administration. To keep the establishment going through very, very difficult times is a tribute to the Manager and staff, who in very trying circumstances have maintained an excellent service.
We now understand that this period of the Hotel's life is now over as it has been bought as a Hotel with promised investment.
During that time, we have stayed in a variety of rooms at a variety of prices and have always admired the cleanliness to be seen all around the Hotel.
We were very fortunate in being able to attend a charity dinner on behalf of the Lord Mayor's Charity in August and were amazed at the quality of both food and service provided to the 100+ guests. We were also able to observe the welcome and service provided for residents, which was of a similar standard. On this occasion we stayed the night and had a very enjoyable, full traditional breakfast which was well served in the Restaurant and set us both up for the day.
We note many reviewers appear to be business clients, who presumably, are more used to the fast and often cool service to be found in the 'chain establishments'. In a building of this age there is the chance that some aspects are rather quirky e.g. a lift only to the 3rd not 4th floor, but so what at the prices being charged. Having stayed in other local establishments, we have yet to find one which is as clean and where the staff are so pleasant, professional and helpful.
We have noticed that the large restaurant appears to be closed with other smaller rooms being used as Dining Rooms. On enquiry we were told, by a member of staff, that this was a simple economic decision, as the restaurant had to be laid up with linen, cutlery and glassware regardless of the number of diners.
The speed of service at lunchtime for us, was not a concern and the quality of service was of the standard we have historically become used to. We are sure that with some new investment, of which there is already evidence, the Hotel will return to being the prime Hotel in the District.
We have noticed it is now called 'The Great Victoria Hotel', this must be part of the changes that are taking place.
I must comment on the disparaging remarks made by another reviewer as to the language skills of staff. This is not the challenge that is to be found in other establishments in this City!
We are due to return to the Hotel in November and are very keen to see what has changed in that time and will submit a review on our visit.
