“Good Food, Awful Service”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 weeks ago

Walked into the Fox goes Free to an Empty pub, we had booked and got sitted by the Front Door. The Customer Service was non existant with us having to Order from the Bar for our Food, the Menu wasn't explained and too be honest the Menu was Bland and boring oh and on Paper sheets. We ordered and the Food Arrived there was no conversation when the Waitress brought the Food and also my Pet hate, She didn't even have the decency to come back and check if everything was ok. Food was Good but was let down by Customer Service, don't know why this place has a Rosette. Over-priced bland Menu.

We stayed at The Fox Goes Free as a group of 6 lads on 13th June as part of our annual summer weekend away.

The pub is absolutely perfect - in a fantastic rural location, good beers (Peroni on draft), fantastic food menu and helpful staff.

The rooms were perfect for our requirements and breakfast was great, with plenty of choice.

We will be back.

Stayed here in early June on a Friday and Saturday night, plan was to go racing at Goodwood but decided against as the locals were flocking to see some band called chas n dave, sorry chas n status after racing . Good decision cos this pub has a unique setting with delightful views across the open countryside. We stayed in a room outside in courtyard which was quaint, comfortable and clean with complimentary toiletries and water. The bar and restaurant also has a real country feel about it, relaxing , good food and pleasant staff throughout but book early to avoid the rush later. I would like to give a special mention to Chloe who was helpful and attentive throughout our stay.
If you fancy a real country part of England with fine walks and wonderful views then give this pub a go, you won't be disappointed . Rich ( the tout)

This place is certainly tucked away, but what a find.Suerb location surrounded by glorious countryside. The pub itself is so welcoming with stone floors, low beams and a great antiquity.Stunning.The beer garden is so spacious, green and well kept:and what a lovely evening to sit outside with a cold beer!! There was an enticing restaurant and an appetising menu.I opted for the shoulder of lamb which was accompanied by lush, fresh vegetables.Just superb. My room was well-appointed,spacious,and an extremely comfortable bed.Only downside was poor internet connection and a window it was difficult to open on a warm evening.Slept like a dream and came down to a massive full English breakfast which was sufficient to see me through the day!! This was a thoroughly enjoyable stay and will most certainly be back.

My dad & I stayed at the Fox Goes Free from Wednesday 21st May through to Sunday 25th May as we were celebrating my dads 80th birthday and visiting the 3 day May festival at Goodwood races. We were welcomed by Kristian the manager of the pub and shown to our room which was attached to the pub, adjacent to the entrance, The room was perfect, very comfortable beds, spotlessly clean, tea & coffee making facilities and toiletries. The rooms were cleaned every day and the towels replaced along with two bottles of drinking water. The pub had a fantastic selection of well kept real ales and was just like our rooms spotlessly clean, all members of Kristians team were polite, extremely helpful and nothing seem to be to much trouble. The breakfast was amazing, cooked perfectly and used fresh local produce, we ate each evening within one of the three restaurant areas and I can honestly say that it is the best food I have eaten in a pub restaurant. There is a fantastic choice to suit all tastes, daily fish specials and a selection of desserts that finished the meal of perfectly. The Fox Goes Free has a wonderful garden looking over the countryside and just like the inside of the pub the garden was kept in perfect order. All in all this is the best stay I have had in a pub with accommodation and this made my dads 80th birthday the best he has ever had 'my dads words' Kristian and his team made the stay very specials as nothing was to much trouble, even walking us to the taxi for Goodwood races with an umbrella in the pouring rain. The pub is in a perfect location for Goodwood and the South Down but be warned you will have to book the rooms early (months in advance) and the restaurant as everyone know that this gem is worth a visit.

Room Tip: The rooms adjacent to the entrance are ideal for anyone a little older as they are on the ground flo...

Spent a very enjoyable night at the Fox Goes Free in Charlton near to Goodwood. The pub itself is a quaint picture postcard style building full of oak beams and with open fires and excellent it has a large well established garden overlooking the South Downs. The staff are very friendly and cannot do enough for you, the beer is well kept and the restaurant meals are superb. Stayed in one of the Stable Rooms and had a very comfortable night loving all of the extra touches that are part of the Fox Goes Free experience. Woke in the morning feeling fully refreshed and had a hearty breakfast. Will I go back, YES of course it would be foolish not to.

This is an idyllic old pub with five B & B rooms, set in the gorgeous W. Sussex South Downs. The building, an old staging house, with all the charms of low ceilings, odd steps & beams everywhere is set in the tiny village of Charlton, with a garden backing on downs dotted with sheep & their lambs in early May. One of the prettiest placed to down a pint & enjoy food. Our room was lovely too, but up rather steep stairs, so if disabled asked for ground floor rooms. The dinners and breakfasts were all very tasty and the young staff couldn't have been more helpful and friendly. Also a great base to explore the beautiful area, with horse & car racing at Goodwood and Fontwell nearby, West Dean Gardens, The Weald & Downland Open Air Museum (beautiful, historic buildings saved from local towns), Arundel Castle and Chichester Cathedral, as well at Petworth House, Midhurst & Cowdray Park all nearby.
