The key to a good break is to think carefully about what you want and then, using Trip Advisor and lots of other sources to hand on the www, to make a well informed choice.
I live in Sussex but had been stuck at home for 12 weeks. Eventually the opportunity to get away came up. I wanted somewhere within 2 1/2 hours drive on my home, restfull, comfortable with good food - and a pool. After about 2 hours on the web I had concluded that the pool was not to be. Pools are attached to either very big hotels or to family homes which look as if my aunt did the soft furtnishings circa 1957. I almost made it to The Place in Camber but having been told by their reception that the roads were jam packed (it was a very hot August Bank Holoday Monday) I realised that restfull was not an automatic consequence of 'sea views'. West Stoke, 90 minutes drive away, got the business, such as it was, as I was travelling alone. West Stoke falls into the relatively new category of a 'restaurant with rooms' but it is better than that. It is more personal than a hotel and with only 5 rooms the temptation may be to call it a 'B and B' but that gives the wrong impression. It is decidely posh. On the plus side the newspaper reviews for West Stoke were brilliant - I could feintly recall reading the original Guardian review when it came out. I wasn't put off by the review below which has all the signs of being the product of the end to a fraught day. [Lessons to be learned all round on thatone, perhaps?] There is a 'Gold Star' for West Stoke because they advertise that they take dogs. I love dogs but this was a dog-free break for me. Letting punters bring their pets when you own such a wonderful house and have gone to the trouble of designing and furnishing it the West Stoke way (cream carpets, white linen) was a clear indication that the hosts really did want thier guests to relax. I was put off by the resataurant being closed on Tuesday (my first night) but I knew this in advance and had checked out good eating places close by. As it happens I was directed by West Stoke's owner to somewhere I hadn't considered which was a) very good (36 On The Quay), if a bit chef-fy, and b) it is a rival establishment. Only a host who wants his guests to have a great meal directs them to his rival's establishment!
The house is fantastic. Very comfortable with stunning design. It is better than home -less clutter, cleaner, quirkier, huge and, said through gritted teeth, better designed. Some of this is down to the originnal architect but the current owners have made it all look and feel fantastic. Loads of space in the public rooms, in the bedrooms and in the surrounding grounds. Some great modern art produced the visual challenge and some eclectic music soothed the soul.
I enjoyed an excellent meal on night number 2 in the turquoise dining room- I recommend the belly pork and the cod - with an unusual bottle of biodynamic wine. The breakfasts are also smashing. Yummy sausages and fresh pressed apple juice. This is a relaxed home with a relaxed host. Don't think about West Stoke if you want a hotel with 24 hour staff chasing round after you and geeks proping up the bar. Don't come here if you like the stuffed animal heads look and clubby manners. If you want great food, relaxed style, where you can walk about bare foot without someone thinking your odd, this is the place. Masses to do locally.
West Stoke was a great choice for me and next time I visit I'll take one of my dogs along. I am sure he will enjoy it just as much as his owner did. Definitley an OK place to be a single traveller.
