“3 day break”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 days ago NEW

We have just returned from a brilliant time in the White Swan. On arrival we were given a room that was a little noisy due to the air conditioning unit outside. We asked for another room and was given number 8, overlooking the fields. It was so peaceful. The staff were very helpful and the food was delicious, we had a steak meal on Friday night and it was cooked perfectly. The breakfast was to die for, and we did not need to eat until the evening as there was so much food.
We would definitely visit again, it was perfect as a base for visiting Arundel, Chichester, Winchester and Worthing. Loved it.

Room Tip: Ask for a room over the fields, it's much quieter.

We had lunch here on the candle light Saturday in Arundel. We were given a warm welcome, and efficient service. The staff were very busy setting up outside for the visitors to Arundel, but the staff made sure we were well looked after. The food was freshly cooked and well presented. I had the salmon with crab fishcakes and would happily go back and eat it all again. My Dad cheekily asked for a free sample of the pies they were selling outside, which they did, my dad was upset that he had to share it between 3 others. We were not going to let him have it all to himself. The pies were gorgeous and stuffed full of tender beef. My dad went straight outside and brought some pies to take home.

First stay at this Fuller’s hotel.

The good things first. It is located in the centre of Arundel, but has no car park. The council car park round the back is expensive. Free parking on the road is possible, but care is needed to make sure you don’t overstay. Our room was small, but had basic features one expects to be universal, but are in fact rare. So the room is well lit, the bathroom mirror is also well lit, and there is a socket close enough to a mirror to allow hair drying and make-up. The bed was comfortable. Surprising how many hotels can’t do these things. We didn’t eat here in the evening . The menu is typically pie and pint Fullers, so not our thing, but the breakfast was good, with a cooked option, plus fruit, yoghurt, cereal etc. There is tea and coffee making in the room.

On to the not so good things, and the first thing you notice in this hotel is air fresheners. They are everywhere including corridors, bedrooms and the restaurant areas, and they are the full strength plug-in types. What’s this about? What disgusting pong are they covering up?

Our room was clean enough, and nautically themed apart from the curtains which were some 1980s retro floral pattern, which didn’t work at all. There was also no wardrobe, just a metal rack on the wall. The room really needed a facelift. There was mould at the bottom of the (plastic) shower curtain, the loo didn’t flush (but was quickly fixed), and the bathroom lino was visibly nailed down in places. The stripped floor boards needed scrubbing. There was a knack to working the door lock.

One other thing. When booking for 1 room and 2 people, the first price you get on Hotels.com is only for 1. It is updated later (additional £10) on the Swan’s website and makes comparisons difficult. I think this is sharp practice.

Overall then pretty average, not particularly good value and generally needs freshening up (no pun intended).

We went for a meal at the Swan last night, We were sat at a very nice table for two and given the menu. literally 2 minutes later we were asked for our order, we asked for a bit more time, 2 minutes later we were asked again and felt pressured into ordering. 3 minutes after ordering the starters arrived. We finished the starters and within 1 minute the table was cleared, 3 minutes later the mains arrived, within 2 minutes of finishing these the table was cleared and we were asked about dessert and given menus, 2 minutes later asked what we would like. I asked for some more time to decide, 2 minutes later were asked again, I asked for more time, a further 2 minutes and I gave up and ordered. We arrived at 8pm and were finished, bill paid and walking out the door by 9.02pm. Had this been a rushed lunch hour I would probably have been grateful but for what was supposed to be a relaxed dinner....... The food was mediocre and out of proportion, my wife had guinea fowl (changed the cous-cous for potatoes and got a tiny piece of guinea fowl and 10 medium sized potatoes. Seriously not impressed.

The Swan offers excellent service and amazing atmosphere and if you want food at the bar or in the restauruant it is 1st class, with amazing service. The roast dinners are some of the best I have tasted. Quiz night on a monday eevening is a sutble affair again with a great atmposhere. Dogs are welcome. It is so good we are going for Christmas dinner on the 25th. A must visit.

Stayed here with my Wife for our 10th wedding anniversary and I have to say what a great time we had. The staff are so friendly and helpful and really looked after us. Room was great as well and a delicious breakfast next morning.

We have eaten here on 5/6 occasions over the last couple of years, sometimes as a couple and twice with friends.

The pub can get very busy, especially in the summer (main tourist season),and we have learnt to eat early unless you are happy to wait a while.

We have always found the service to be friendly. There is a reasonably wide selection of food (and drinks!) and we have normally found it good quality, reasonable portions and well presented. Prices are a little more than many West Sussex pubs but probably reflect its town centre tourist location.

Slightly worrying, like an earlier reviewer,we too have suffered from a mistake in our bill (not on the last occasion thought).

Expect good 'pub food',friendly service but eat early and check your bill!

(I would have been tempted to rate as 'average' but have given it an extra 'star' for friendly service and some of the cleanest, best maintained toilets found in pubs!)
