I have dined in the hotel restaurant many times, but not in recent years, however with a celebration dinner to organise, I decided to check that it was as satisfactory as I remembered it! How right I was to do so.
We (my wife and and I) were shown to a table, next to a radiator, hot enough to be a safety hazard - it was almost glowing! We quickly found a table in the centre of the room and waited, and waited. Eventually the waitress approached and mentioned that a couple of items were not available that day - not unusual. We waited again, and waited. After about fifteen minutes we were able to give our order for food and I requested a wine list. The waitress brought this saying she would return in a few moments for our drinks order. We waited, and waited. Eventually a man in "civvies" took our drinks order and departed, not having told the waitress that he had done so, she found out when she came to repeat the process. She then volunteered the information that 'the soup is off", yes, the soup! I substituted paté. We waited and waited. Then along came the starters, but no drinks! My wife became so exasperated that she went in search of them. This did elicit some response form the torpid staff and two glasses of wine and a bottle fo sparkling water were brought by the man in civvies. Then an ice bucket. By this time I was getting worried. Had we inadvertently ordered a bottle not a glass? No, there was the glass on the table. The bucket was for the water, which was brought to the table at room temperature! Ice in the glasses might have been more useful. The white wine was at the same temperature as the water! The gap between the starters and the main course was also long.
The food was average pub standard in my case. My wife's steak, ordered medium was "well done" in fact over cooked and tough. Mine, also ordered medium was on the rare side but would just about have been acceptable as "pub grub". The chips were tired as was the salad.
Just as we were finishing the brave waitress had the temerity to ask "was everything alright" It wasn't and I said so.
By this time the temperature had fallen from saharan to tropical.
The only recompense was the deduction of the charge for the starts, and of course the tip which was of course not forthcoming!
A truly dreadful experience. Needless to say, my celebration dinner will be elsewhere.
I should add that only two tables were occupied and there were two waitresses and the man referred to above.
