As a family goup of six we wanted something a little different to celebrate the New Year, so after careful consideration we settled on Coombe Abbeys Medieval Banquet.
We arrived early and were able to have lunch even though we hadn`t reserved a table. it was an excellent meal served quickly in a cosy atmosphere, it was also very reasonably priced. we probably paid a little more than is usual for our room, but it was worth every penny, a beautiful room, a little on the dark side which was very inkeeping with the theme.
The Banquet itself is based on a theme whereby around 1595 the Abbot threw open the doors to the local peasants and invited them to join him in a meal fit for a king, basiclly a night of bawdy fun, fine food and fine wine.
That evening after a fairly long wait we were shown to our overcrowded table, we were then informed that they were sorry but they had three extra people who we needed to fit on, talk about tuck your elbows in. when the food arrived it was clear this was not to be fine dining. the potato and salad were ok, but most of the meat was seriously tough. the wine was not good at all, but it was free and there was lots of it.lots of people passed me theirs but I`m sorry I really struggled with it.
I tried ordering a bottle of decent wine but was told I would have to queue at the bar for it.not what I wanted to hear.
Having said all this our party still managed to have a really nice time, before we left we had a liesurely breakfast and chatted to the very pleasant staff, whilst I would pass on the Banquet senario,we all thoroughly enjoyed our time and would definately recommend it.
