“Clean room but that was about it!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 28, 2013

I needed a cheap place to stay while in Coventry on business. I really should have read the reviews before booking this place! The hotel entrance felt like i was back in the 1970s, reception was polite and fast thank god as the wind whistling in through the reception door was so bad the poor receptionist was having to wear a thick wool scarf!

Had booked a double room, Instead I had a twin - pretty pointless for a solo traveller! Slept very badly as the central heating in the room seemed to come on and off at odd times and made a very loud rattling sound! The room was clean if pretty sparse and the furniture had seen better days.

Breakfast was more to be endured than enjoyed. The first morning I filled the plate with a few hot items, tried each in turn and spat them back onto the plate, how the hell do you get mushroom wrong! opted for cereal and yoghurt but the yoghurt was in one large bowl with no idea how old it was. The next morning the toaster started to catch fire, no staff were on hand and a guest had to extract the burning toast caught in the machine.

The whole place needs pulling down, it just spoils the view of the cathedral.

There is nothing about this hotel that is good, it should be condemned. Filthy, broken furniture, cracked toilet, indifferent staff. Do not stay here. How a hotel like this can still be in business in 2013 is beyond me, it belongs in the era of the 1970s station hotels except the Britannia is worse. You have been warned.

For £22 I was happy with my stay - but anymore and I would have been upset! Room was non smoking - although the smell of smoke was very noticable - although with a bit of air freshner this dissapeared. The lifts were a joke - so I just walked up the three flights of stairs. Room was generally clean and tidy, even if there was a 1920's feel to it - deffo needs upgrading! TV was about 50miles from the bed and again, outdated. The beds were clean and comfy - would stop here again if there was another offer for a £22 room going - wouldnt pay anymore though!

Room Tip: Only stop if its a cheap room

went on a Christ market Break with my friend and Majestic Coaches to this hotel 2 weeks before xmas .From the start it was a disaster we were thrown the keys to our room by an uninterested receptionist. No porter to take cases to the rooms . the room had not been cleaned properly as there was a used coffee sachet under the dressing table and remained there till the day we left
the bathroom furniture was broken and unclean . we had a twin room the bedding was too big for the base and the duvet too small for the bed . the spare blanket was not very nice but we had to useit or be cold my friend found somebody elses tablets on her bed We were told we had to be to dinner at 6-30 prompt went down the que was back to the reception desk and the dining room doors didn't open till 6-45 pm we were told there was 5 coaches in the hotel soyou can imagine the ques and the rush for tables the same applied to breakfast .that was an absolute shambles i personally didn't have breakfast as there was only one toaster and the wait for that was 50 deep ( no lie juice and cereals were on the same table people were drinking the juice while waiting for the toaster and leaving dirty glasses on the table . empty juice jugs everywhere . nobody cleaning or replenishing the juice. People were coming to the restaurant to be told there's no tables so the had to eat their breakfast in the bar that was freezing cold and believe me it was cold in fact the whole hotel was freezing we came back to our room at 4 pm asked if the heating was on to be told no until 6 pm There was no Manager to be found or available when we requested one( amazing) nobody could find one even our coach driver said he couldn't find one
all in all never again will I use Majestic i had similar experience when i went to Chester with them some years back and put it down to a one off problem and didn't say anything but this time no way We complained to Majestic in Teignmouth Devon Head office My friend had a letter back saying we were exaggerating the whole thing its just a pity that all the other people who were on the same coach and other coaches that were complaining didn't bother to follow up the problems as the Coach Company and the Hotel will just carry on taking you money and treat you like idiots because they don't care . and if the Hotel would like to respond to this review and call me a liar like they did in the reply to my friend id be very interested in their response

Had a twixmas break with my husband, I must say it was cheap. Great room 722 big bed, seperate loo & a balcony. It was all inc but, the food was not good everything at breakfast was overdone & hard. The evening meal, well 2 choices gammon with mustard sauce or beef in pepper sauce, too bad if you don't like spicy stuff but, realised it was to cover the overdone microwaved beef up. Next night it was bland roast pots, veg & overdone turkey.I saw one lady have the veggie meal, same as ours but, with rice instead of meat, yummy! Another told the waitress that hers had been in the microwave too long! This was in the restaurant on the ground floor where it was cold & quite dark. There were only about 6 or 8 of us in there all the coach parties were on the 1st floor. Normally I travel on my own & have been to the Britannia in Brighton & Liverpool which are far superior to this one. I like to be with the coach parties & you get self service which I like, so you get to talk to other people & pick what you want to eat from a large selection.I think they are trying to be something they are not, waitress service was diabolical not asking if you would like a drink, we had to ask for water. One man asked for a drink & was told he had to go to the bar for an orange juice. Took my husband's plate away before I had finished, dropped cutlery & gave some backchat to boot. After waiting 20 mins for a dinner that obviuosly came out of a microwave we DINED in Wetherspoons on the last night! Needless to say we would not go back there!

Room Tip: Good on the top floor

We went with Majestic coach tours two weeks before Christmas 2012. We were told to turn up for the evening meal at 7pm but when we got there, were told to come back 15 minutes later. There was no chance of a table for two - we were in a coach party and were forced to sit with the rest of the passengers. There was no flexibility at all with meal times. The food was dire. We ate there the first night only.

A 99p bar was advertised but we were charged £1 - so why not state that as the price? The bar area is much too small for the many coach parties the hotel accommodates. We and a lot of other people had to spend evenings in our room or in neighbouring pubs as we could not find room to sit in the bar.

The bedroom was not bad at all. The door to the room fitted badly - there was a big gap underneath and neighbouring room doors slammed automatically and loudly. I had to use earplugs. However, the room itself was nice and large and the bathroom ditto. There was lots of storage space, a nice table and two chairs.

Thankfully, this hotel is beautifully located in the centre of Coventry and there is no shortage of eating and drinking places in the area.
