“well done "Royal Court"”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 26, 2012

We stayed at the Royal Court 14th - 18th March.
This was our 8th visit to the Hotel in the last 18months and
yet again we have no complaints.

Every member of staff are very helpful and friendly and
nothing is too much trouble.

We are looking forward to our 9th visit.

Well done to Heather and her Team.

We thought so what the reviews are bad, we'll make the most of it, we wouldn't do that again. Although the bed linen on top was clean the valance had clearly not been changed for a very, very long time. The shower would only bring in cold water although the bath did work. The food on the evening was the worst I have ever experienced in an hotel. The earliest we could book our table was 9.00 p.m. and it did look as if the food had been out for several hours, 'chef' very blunt. The free wine was warm. Tried to order some from the bar after dinner as thought may be kept better but choice was limited. No Pinot. No Cointreau.

Breakfast wasn't bad. We went out for whole day and decided to eat out as couldn't face meal there again even though it had been paid for in the deal, got back and room hadn't been serviced. They did offer to do it then or a change of room; we juts couldn't be bothered and settled for clean cups and new stock. Although cheap I have still put value as poor as you couldn't enjoy the food or the wine.

We checked into hotel at 6.30pm on Saturday with evening meal and breakfast as part of our package.

Staying at the hotel as an extra to our wedding stay we had at the Royal Court last November. On arrival greeted by excellent reception staff, who advised of where to go to our room and what time meals were served.

On arriving in our room, found all the mods and accessories as previous fabulous jacuzzi bath and shower. Emptied over night bags and then went down for meal, ordered food and within 15 minutes of ordering the food it arrived at our table with good sized portions and tasty too, exceptional customer service and prompt.

Then went out for evening and returned, remembering to put clocks forward! Woke and had a hearty breakfast and then checking out.

It is worth pointing out we would like to thank again sincerely for their assistance Chaz, Heather and all other staff we met again you are a credit to the hotel and key to the growing good reputation that this hotel is getting now with upgrades and renovations.

Many thanks

We stayed for one night on a dinner, bed and breakfast special package which included free wine and free use of the 'leisure facilities'. We were very dissapointed.

The whole place is very dated and in serious need of refurbishment. Our room was a good size, 'one of the better rooms' we were told at check-in, however it was not clean, the bed was not comfortable, and the in room wi-fi was nowhere to be found. The only wi-fi we found was in the reception area and this was quite slow, though it was free.

On arrival at 16:30 we were advised to give the restaurant a call and book a table for dinner as it 'can get quite busy'. We did call as soon as we got to the room to be offered 21:30 as the only available time. The alternative was to eat snacks at the bar, which we elected to do. Considering the comments from other guests about the standard of the restaurant, I think we did the right thing. As we ate in the bar, the queue for the restaurant built up and you had to feel sorry for those who hadn't tried to book at all - by that time the bar was also full and they were being offered 22:00 as the next available time for dinner. The food at the bar wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either. The free wine is a joke. Three mills 'reserve' red british wine - 1.99 from tesco.

Breakfast was ok, and actually not as busy as we'd expected, though we were quite early. The selection was reasonable and the staff were friendly. In fact, the one redeeming feature of the stay was that the majority of staff were quite nice. Considering the stress they must have to put with trying to satisfy guests in this chaotic hole, most did so well with a smile, with a couple of exceptions.

Checkout was painless enough, though they had mislaid a charge for £3.20 which we'd made to the room account at the bar. I explained this to them but was told they couldn't charge me without the paper from the bar, so I'd have to wait to see if it turned up. I'll have to wait and see whether I get a bill in the post.

Overall, a dissapointing stay at a dissapointing hotel. A little refurbishment would go a long way, as would a deep clean. Better organisation for the restuarant would really help, especially when offering DBB packages.

don;t be fooled by the cheap price, cheap is not always cheerful. Room was hrrid, uncomfortable bed, smelt of stale cigarettes. I had a jacuzzi bath which was a highlight. Breakfast dire, rubbery toast, awful.
no wi fi in rooms only in the bar, not good
Don;t do it!

Our bedroom (367) was large and spacious with plenty of furniture and lighting, all clean and spotless, 2 towels each and bathmat, all changed daily. The room was well cleaned daily and then inspected by head chamber maid. Another rail in the wardrobe would be a great addition.
The dining room was a big baronial hall with dark wood panelling, big tables, well spaced with comfortable dining chairs, clean white tablecloths and clean china and cutlery. You have to book a time for dinner each day, this avoids bottlenecks and is a good system but is not well publicised.
Food is only average, starter is soup or a cheap alternative, served to your table, the rest of the meal is self-service.
Main course is carvery, there must be a vegetarian option but you would probably have to ask for this, no fish and sometimes only red meat. The vegetables are mediocre and uninspiring. Instead of plain boiled cauliflower they could easily make huge pans of cauliflower cheese, much more appealing and just as easy to cater for large numbers of guests. Similarly instead of plain boiled red cabbage they could have spiced red cabbage casserole cooked with onion, garlic, apple, spices, sugar and vinegar. Carrots could be dressed with lemon and herbs or with butter and honey. They could have roast parsnips to go with all their roast meats.
There were 2 diiferent roast meats each night and then one other dish eg chicken chasseur, lasagne, beef casserole. The roast beef was tough and leathery. all meat was well done - good because you won't get food poisoning, the meat was nicely carved by the chef and plentiful.
Desserts were OK - bit like you would get from Iceland, mousses could do with a label so you know what's in it, and glass dishes instead of plastic would go better with the ambience.
Staff in the restaurants. bars and reception were friendly and helpful, there could be more information about how to cope with the restaurant.
Breakfast is chaotic if you go at a busy time, best to go early or late.
We turned up at 9.15am the first day and there were 20 people waiting to get a table.
All credit goes to "Robbie", a brilliant lady who rushes round working like a trojan, clears tables, re-lays them and then rushes back to the queue to get the next people and seats them at it. Calls everyone "sweetheart" and never runs out of smiles.
Maybe if they all worked as hard as Robbie there wouldn't be a problem.
Quite a good choice at breakfast (all self-service but no-one tells you) at busy periods they ran out of toast, fried eggs, bacon.
Once you've got your table it's all quite fast and smooth because you help yourself, as long as they haven't run out of anything.
2nd day we went at 10am and it was much better.
There are huge function rooms there, we went for a jazz weekend and used one of them, Good accoustics, comfortable chairs, nice and warm.
Drinks at bar are fairly cheap and there were special offers on what we drink !
They had cream teas at a a good price and any other snacks you might want during the day all looked OK although we didn't try them.
They had a wedding party on the Saturday night and some of the drunken guests came along our corridor about 2 am singing and woke everybody up but apart from that it was pretty quiet in our room.
They have wi-fi in reception, either bring your own laptop or put coins in the slot to use their 2.
Attention to detail could improve it a lot.
There were lots of cigarette ends in the flower tub outside the main entrance, they just need to put collection units on the walls around the entrance and empty them.
We attempted to stroll around the 11 acres of landscaped parkland advertised on there website and in the promotional material in the room - this appears to have built on with huge car parks, hotel rooms and the pool and gym. the only parkland appears to be the area in front of the original old building, at most an acre of garden - nice goldfish ponds, little waterfalls etc.
The surrounding landscapes could do with someone going round with a black sack once a week and collecting up all the rubbish there. Between each hotel wing are raised garden beds that need weeding and planting. Glass doors to the outside really showed up lots of finger prints when the sun shone - wouldn't take much to have them cleaned daily.

But you get what you pay for and overall we don't really care what's outside - just feel they could charge more if it was all immaculate and it wouldn't take much.
Overall it was excellent value for money

On arrival, the room was allocated (once the reservation could be found). Unfortunately the room was still occupied. When this was questioned, we were advised that another room would be allocated but that we would have to wait as 'the system was down'!!! The food was poor, lacking in creativity and if you don't like carvery then you will be very disappointed. Don't ask for fish, as there is none!! Rooms are at best, adequate. Couldn't quite work out why headboards are screwed to the walls so will leave readers to work that out! The corridors are dingy and the ceilings tiles discoloured or missing in places. The swimming pool is nice, although charging £1 for a towel seems a little mean. Please remember to bring your own padlock if you intend to leave anything in the pool lockers, oh and don't leave anything for more than 24 hours or the lock will be cut off!!! This hotel seems to cater (no pun intended) to large gatherings and conferences. The location is pleasant but the whole experience could be improved with some investment.
